    I always found the Humors theory to be interesting, because there's a weird bit of logic in it, because certain foods will increase your odds of fighting off certain illnesses. Now, we always think of how silly a lot of these cures are, but they were able to figure out diabetes and what was roughly causing it (too much sweets) and we do still have soup for the cold, so they were kind of on to something.

    • @arcanelore3791
      @arcanelore3791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I agree. The thing a lot of modern people don’t seem to realize, or choose to ignore, is that folk of the past weren’t just dicking around when it came to things like medical treatment. They were working with what information they had under the best scientific system available to them at the time. Was a good deal of it incorrect? Absolutely. Was there logic and rationale to it? You bet.

      I am trying for a baby and I have read that a high magnesium & calcium diet helps have girl, so I am trying to eat magnesium rich foods and yoghurt (the yoghurt has acidophilus lactobacillus which is similar bacteria to the vaginal bacteria that clean the vagina and make it too acidic for male sperm) it's probably just magical thinking and old wives tales but it can't hurt so I am trying that (along the staples method)

      and garlic is good to prevent heart some heart diseases, and like the soup, it prevents you from getting a cold, the medieval middle east doctors believed afterall that a healthy diet like eating alot of greens helped you from getting sick and it is true, food helps in more ways than one

We just let the slices cook down with the sugar and cinnamon. The broth (juice) from this goes quite well over our biscuits or muffins. I might have to give Apfelmus a try soon.

    There's this very human habit where we tend to think that all people of the eras before us were stupid (humours? elements? bile-related foods? what?), but our ancestors were far smarter than we give them credit for.
    They based their information off close observation and scientific method, even before those were the words they knew those things by. You don't have to understand why something works to know it does, and a lot of their medicinal plants and herbs have been refined down into the medicines we still use today. They tried their hardest to make sense of the world around them. That is a very human drive, and it's not something we've ever stopped doing.
    Eating mashed apples to cure the plague seems ridiculous to us now, but you can bet that our modern medicine - and, more specifically, our desperate, terrified attempts at cures in the face of mass death - will seem stupid and primative to people six hundred years from now.

    I suspect that as well as the four humours, there was an element of religious thought going on as well with this dish.
    The plague was seen as God's curse on mankind's sin. The apple represented man's original sin. The sandalwood could have represented man's salvation in the precious wood of the cross. Just a guess.

      Very possible because they also used ideas of sympathetic medicine (stuff being cured by things that looked like it for example rubbing toads on warts) and religious elements like praying to specific patron saints for specific diseases ( fun fact , Saint George is the patron Saint of syphilis if you ever need to rile a member of the English far right xx)

    I can't remember right now which of my Amish families descended from this myth, but they claimed that the Plague destroyed a man's village so much that he left a light on hoping other plague survivors would find him, and a young woman showed up. They combined their surnames/place names and were married and had a happy life after.
    When I say myth, I mean there's no proof and it sounds a bit like a good story, but I like the slight romantic angle plus the hopeful message.

    What apples did you use? In the Netherlands we used specific apple cultivars for appelmoes, called moesappels instead of hand apples. Raw these aren't very tasty (mealy texture). Might affect the smoothness of your muse. Most commonly used is the goudrennet (golden rennet I guess?) which isn't very nice as is but makes great apple sauce.
    source: parents have both types in their orchard, the difference is quite telling.

    I love your show and am so glad to have discovered it! I am under the impression that a lot of ancient foods and cooking were.... pretty gross. Meats and fish were overcooked, vegetables were rarely fresh, spices were hard to come by or expensive, and really most people were seeking alimentation instead of haute cuisine. I would love to see you test some of the more typical recipes that we think are gross! Eg. instead of choosing the almondmilk and honey applemuse, choose the beef suet one! Then tell us how strange it is. Thanks! Love your show
