And someone can cry that the economy is fu...ed up: on planes in the days when invited friends were building me a Golden Eagles wallet, it took 8 hours of playing to make the 4th era. Hands up: who abhorred such friendship? XD!

@@Asghaad My friend, economics is not about sitting on a heap of money no matter how skilled you are. That's what communism is all about. Gaijin has to make money because it is the same company as an internet provider or an apple seller. If you don't like its economy, don't play it. There are 2,000 vehicles in the game today. Let Gaijin give you one for every day you play - no matter how skilled you are.
It will take you...5 years to get all the vehicles: ONLY FOR DAILY LOGIN TO THE GAME. Even with GJ's generosity, many people would not be willing to do so. Is that a reason to cry? Me: on a rank 2 plane (has a free talisman) I'm already inventing a 7th jet. It takes me about 2-3 weeks of playing, but a KD ratio of 2/1 is enough. In fact, I play a lot. Because that's the price of free play, you have to fill servers for people: who pay for new vehicles, talismans, premium account. If you don't like it, play DCS. You will have some two free planes, the rest at the GJ premium price.
"It helps if you aim." is hugely important tutorial advice. I wish more players were using it.
Tutorial should really teach how to range shots and how to use the ranging marks on the scope.
I usually just yeet it in the general direction of the enemy team.

Somebody should do a comparison of the old vs current WT economy. How it has changed over the years.
Old : 20mil sl per kill New : 100 sl per kill (joke)
I have a comparison to one premium aircraft - A7M1. Prior to last year's eco changes, I earned around 130,000 SL for 4 kills and won the battle. After the changes, I earned around 90,000 SL for 4 kills and a battle won. So in this case, the overall economy dropped by about 30%. But every vehicle have different SL multiplier. But each vehicle in the game had its multiplier changed differently so it's hard to quantify.
Good game with premium high tier tank liké old t55am1 was 20/25k exp per game and aroune 130k sl, now that was 10/12k exp and 70/80 sl
It would be an interesting experiment and go back thru long time WT CCs like Dollar's, PhlyDaily, etc. and collect that data from their videos.

I recently saw a guy on one video saying that "Content creators should start a new account and show Gaijin and other people how the grind is first hand"
And Dollar does exactly that, that's why you're the GOAT, humble to the end.
Of course though, he is an experienced player with all the map knowledge and muscle memory that comes with it. The true new player experience is a bit harsher. Heck, just try playing with just the default controls...

Yeah, good veteran war thunder player managed to unlock tier 1, buy tanks and crews in 4 hours. Was left with +30k SL. He most likely won most of his games and averaged between 5-10 kills in each game.
Now let's see stats when a complete new comer starts fresh. He has no idea of the maps, doesn't know weak spots and how to aim accurate. This kinda player will most likely win max 50% of his games (if lucky with teams) and probably averages around 0.5 - 1.0 KD. Let's see how far will he progress and how many SL will he have floating around after 4 hours...
@@JackTheNoober I can assure you, at 4 hours I was still trying to unlock maybe my 1st or 2nd tank that I didn't start with. I quit the game because I can't be bothered grinding it. But I do love watching WT videos still.

Absolutely love this video seeing experienced CCs play in a non prem F2P account you dont always see that. Been playing WT for nearly 6 years. I only bought the Premium Account like 2 or 3 times (never the BP tho) to progress a bit faster for the Italian and Japanese Tech tree and this was like 2 years ago. Lately the rewards have been lacking, I find myself in some matches getting nearly 12 kills in 4.7-6.3 matches only to get something below around 60k SL and a measly RP which is a frustrating grind and time consuming. Really losing hope in this beautiful but head-ache inducing game
I think it doesn't make sense, a few years ago the game needed a lot of traffic on the servers because the waiting time for the AB game in airplanes was comparable to the game itself.
Today, even when entering a simulation game, you always have a few people on the server and zero seconds of waiting. The game has reached the level of monetization of years of effort and is doing just that.
Its premise has always been: for free players to stimulate the game for paying players. But it's probably ridiculous to think that there can't be differences in the progress of the two types of players.
Buying a talisman on even a low-rank plane is enough for half the tree as you quickly discover it. Someone who plays for free for several years: can't even afford such an expense?
And mind you, you make 12 kills and that's 4-12 people, whose day is absolutely ruined. Imagine how economy is working for them, eh?
@@Wujek_Dobra_Rada Some of us don't think you should spend 20 dollars to take off 52 hours of gameplay on tier 7 tanks just saying buddy. not that we can't afford it, we arent throwing money into this game just because they make the grind longer
What got me interested in WT was that the M60A2 dontcallitstarship was modelled in the game. So I made the rookie mistake of thinking I'd be able to play it soon after starting to play (insert evil maniacal snail laugh here).
I rage quit for like six months due to this realization and general asshattery of WT game play.
I then found my zen and realized that the game has no end. It is a perpetual grind. In fact the grind IS the game. Actually playing the vehicles is secondary to the "War Accountant" meta game.
There is no reason to buy premiums because you aren't in a hurry. Game play isn't fundamentally different between reserve and top-tier. Its all just driving and flying around the same maps ruining other people's games. So I now play casually and patiently at the pace I can put up with, which is usually just the assaults and enough games to use the freebie boosters it gives.

The game is good.. textures, models, terrain deformation, FX, variety of modes, vehicles, simulation of damage when shells impact enemies, etc. but economy, fuuuh, keeps me far from this game, I eventually play sometimes but grind tech tree is painnnnnn. Also play WoWS wich is similar, but easy to level up (IMHO).
Thank you so much Dollar for doing this. So many content creators have no clue what actual players are having to go through on WT. Phly tried to do this but quickly abandoned it to go back to his press account.
Years ago I managed to get 1 million SL after a year of grinding Germany with a premium account while unemployed. These days I am struggling to stay above 300K.
First three ranks are fun, after that the grind really starts. A good video to watch before bed. Would like to see more of the "Free to Play Experience."

I got like 400k silver lions naturally over the years by staying at rank 4 or lower
I had a buddy who grinded Germany mostly f2p and it took him 5 years to get 9.0 in ground and 7.0 air in 2 lines.
i ground germany f2p for like 80% of the tree, the only premium time i got was a total of like 50 days and i played mainly russian and american during the premium time, got to 7.7 germany, took me 900 hours and 2 years to get here, im proud of the work ive done, i have like 2 premium german tanks and that is IT, and i bought them on sale and they arent even my top earning german tanks, the grind is tough, many nights of 5 AM gaming brought me here and im still lacking in the tree for air
@@Trashpanda115 brother im on 2 days of gameplay, terrible at tanks but good at planes(6-8 kills/battle) but not loving, problem is....... i liked the helicopters and my favorite are slower and calm sea battles, how do you think i should Proceed, currently the only nation im playing is Japan 😅

How much did you have KD after those 4 hours? I think most complete newbies struggle to get even to 1KD when new with the game. You managed to unlock stuff, buy it and was left with 30k+. I'd like to see results with average new player stats, how long would it take and how much SL they earn.
@@JackTheNooberI’m a new player I only started last weekend. I’m T3 USA naval, and T2 Italian army, T2 German army and that’s all. It’s clear to me even at these low tiers Germany is the best tank nation and it’s not even close
@@Ginamy72 actually Sweden is best currently. It has a better Leopard 2 variant than Germany for some reason :) Sweden gets pretty much both, their Leo 2(Strv122) variants and also Finnish normal Leo 2s.
I have yet to lose as a new F2P player with 5 hours. I just don’t get the issue. Play objective play to win and live.
I know it may not be something your particularly interested in doing.
But i would quite love to see you play this account *or another new one* in one faction tree, and see how long it'd take. free to play. to get ONE top tier vehicle. with all the knowledge, skill and patience you have. hell i'd enjoy just one video a week on the trip to top tier :)

As someone on this very journey it takes a long time. That said i'm going through the JP air tree and with how little there is past 9.0 progress feels fast enough. finally got the T-2 on new years day which was top tier when i first launched the game and my goal ever since.

As someone who has been free to play for about 850 hours the grind definitely begins to worsen at about rank 4 because that's around when repair costs begin to rise and rewards dont feel like they scale with research needed as much as they did but from what i can remember the grind up to rank 4 is somewhat bearable depending on the nation and player skill especially with the compressed BRs which mean tanks with stabilisers and sometimes laser range finders fight tanks without both but that's a whole different can of worms

oh yeah its real! esp the US Aviation line which suffers HORRIBLY from being underpowered unlike IRL and the ground is just a mess with things line the M18 being placed at 5.7 with a 76mm gun and the M36 being a 5.3 with a 90mm gun! #AmericaSuffers

I mean, even this video shows just how bad the grind is, even a low tier.
A professional player (Pro in the sense of making money playing the game) with TONS of time in the game, getting a double ace of 11 kills, including an air kill in a tank, with a booster, in a reserve rank vehicle (Meaning all kills were on things of equal or higher BR), and still doesn't even earn enough to research a single rank 1 vehicle.
That was gameplay so far above the average game that it should've been worth like a vehicle and a half, considering how little the rank 1 vehicle are.
Average game for what I've seen on scoreboards are like 2-4 kills a game. I've seen lots get nothing, and several get 10+

I'm a US main and I started playing war thunder 3 years ago and I just about done researching rank IV vehicles.
The Grind is pain
im a fairly good player with premium and premium tanks and its still a terrible grind i dont know how people defend the grind
US aviation vet here with rank V just beginning! its a pain and i mean a PAIN! good luck fighting the Su-11 spam thats incoming to your location!
@@aurorathearcticwolf4243 yeah.......rank V is going to be the death of me. I'm already having problems with jets and guided missiles in rank IV And to top it off, the maps I get are just horrible. I have way better luck in Rank II
US main as well, with over 1k hrs on steam. I only JUST got US early jets, and that was only after I purchased the A10 on release. Still not even out of the Shermans yet on ground (highest is the early Super Pershing)

In that same time you could have completed dozens of other games, even RPGs.
WarThunder is just the same battle modes on the same loop over and over. And then every other month, Gaijin does something asinine to piss off the players, who ultimately end up accepting it and continue playing anyway.

As a new player that picked up the game this year after watching your videos I played regularly everyday after work for at least 1-2 hours for at least a month I uninstalled the game wasn’t really fun due to the constant 1 shots and it feeling like no matter how well I did I still wasn’t progressing down the American tree at all
playing alone is painful try finding a squadron if you ever decide on returning to the game it honestly makes a world of difference
Did a right thing. Save your time and don't play this game or play something different. Playing diablo4 right now after deleting warthunder because needed some space. Feels good to dont waste time on Wt anymore.
With the 2nd rank plane, I reveal the 7th jet. It takes me 2-3 weeks. FW190 A1 with free talisman. Yes, I play more than 1-2 hours a day.
I'll repeat what I wrote above: Even if Gaijin gave you one vehicle per day: JUST ONLY FOR LOGGING INTO THE GAME, you'd get all the vehicles in the game in ... five years. Question: why would he give you something for free with the effort of watching a movie on Netflix? Don't you understand it's a company, not Santa Claus?
As you've seen in the video in this game, you can reach the 4th era in a few hours - enough to decide if it's worth paying for, and then pay for the creators' effort or go the harder, free way. If someone hasn't bought anything after playing the game for several years, they have no right to complain that it's difficult. Progress in similar games costs hundreds or thousands of euros, why should Gaijin be Mother Teresa?
i've have been grinding america and haven't played in weeks due to the same issue. at 5.7 i cannot afford the next tank so i cannot progress and console makes things much harder.

And notice that him, a veteran that ends up first in every match with 5 to 10 kills, is making about 5k SL a match. Now imagine your average newbie that gets 1 - 3 kills per match at most... that's insane and we're just at rank 1.
Edit: As someone who's played this game for almost a decade, I can perfectly survive the current economy and don't have much SL shortages at all, but I want to defend new playes. The few times I've managed to get friends into War Thunder, they usually say it's a very good game and then starve to death within the first week and just quit because they feel hindered at every step.
Yeah, you have to learn how to game the game. You wind up playing "War Accountant" more than just playing for fun.

4:00 the stabiliser doesn't work at full speed, it only works if you're moving forwards on low speed.
To be more technical: it isn't an actual stabiliser but a shoulder stock for the gunner, the gunner is holding the trigger for the tank gun like a rifle while looking through the tank gunner sight, so this gives the gunner a small amount of "stabilization". Only early tanks have this, the panzer II, panzer 35/38 (t) amongst others.

I am mostly free to play, i don’t use premium and the only time I spent money was to boost research for Germany as I had progressed a bit on a diff account whilst my main was locked out to catch up after I had recovered the account so I know the pain of grinding for vehicles without premium but it is also kind of relaxing not having to worry about subscriptions, money and stuff. I have wanted warthunder to be more accessible for free2play players so I am participating in the boycott in hopes it will work. Thanks for the video.
Each time I watch one of your videos of WT I think to myself Mmm, maybe I should play this game again. So I download it, begin to play it and then after about 30 minutes or so I remember exactly why I uninstalled it in the first place. For a new player in the game this game has a very steep learning curb, it also doesn't help that even tho you are new to the game you can play against players that have been playing for years and know the maps inside out. And the less we say about the economy the better.

do you need premium account?=if you want to progress into the T10's definitely but don't expect to make loads of money you will be lucky if you break even.

After more than 900 hours I finally used premium to go a bit faster on tank trees that I didn't play. It was night and day. The amount of point you get for doing nothing is crazy. With a friend we compared when one of us only gets one kill and a cap with premium and the other has 5 kills and a cap and no premium. The guy with no premium even with more kills got around 200/300 less research points. Let's not even talk about money, you get double the amount of money with premium.
The outro was the best part. Loved the synthwave retro music with the cool background

Im a Free to Play German Main and i started around mid 2020 to play. Ive got luck bc i got 1mil of Sl which help me go through tier 4 but Tier 5 was the the Tier where everything slowed down like you said. If you have to play 3 years and even more to get to top tier then you know smth wrong. Good Video Dollar keep it up my man.
8:53 with that kind of performance and barely getting 2k research with a small booster.. for a 1.0 br match.. when you get to the point where you don't only have to grind 400-500k worth of research but also need millions to buy the unlocked vehicles.. felt different from long ago where you can unlock new vehicles after a match with that performance.. now it's a struggle to even get to tier 3 if you play casually
But War Thunder doesn't have a paywall, right? lol.

For the curious, playing the Japanese seagoing fleet tree to the Kongo will take you less than a year and a half without premium. True, it took me two years, but it was because when I started it wasn't yet the scale of the ocean and the coastal so the last ship I had ended up in the coastal [sorry my engleso bad]

One tank at that BR is 8k repair cost.
Free to play you need ~4+ kills per spawn JUST TO BE NET ZERO.
You have to realize just how insane that is. You need a Kill / Death ratio of 4 just to be NET ZERO. We're not talking about profit here, just ZERO.
I noticed that with my mosquito. Took out a tiger and some panther looking thing, plus a big attacker looking plane (no idea what), just broke even. Like, what?! Thsoe three vehicles could have done a lot of damage to my team, surely i should get some better pay for that!
Finally a video answering the all important question: What if god was one of us? Just a broke ass low-tier scrub like one of us?
But seriously this is probably my favorite tiers of play after 7-8 years on the grind. Just around the new year I FINALLY broke into 7.0 for the first time with Germany and my next highest loadouts are all still just reaching 5.0/5/3 and I almost always end up only doing one or two rounds before I am fed up and go back to rank 2.
2.3-3.3 in my experience will always be the sweet spot for f2p grinding. The cost of entry for new vehicles is still low enough that you can make your money back before the next vehicle is unlocked and unlocks are still cheap enough that your match winnings usually cover any new unlocks on components you still have. The one time I bought premium vehicles about 4-5 months ago to use mainly for grinding I got the b1-ter and the French premium p-40 and throwing them both on a tier 2 french loadout and its been the best grinding I have ever had. Worth the relatively small cost to get the two premiums for better results. Before that Germany and Italy tier 2 were probably the best for grinding without a premium vehicle.

I’m a new player when compared to most players. I have been playing for about 31 hours and have only been able to get one tier 2 tank on germany and I’m currently grinding the italian air tree. This game is hell to grind in ground forces. I wish it would be a little easier to grind ground tree. To put i. some context this was before the economy reforms. Just shows how much has changed. I’m a very happy man.

Remember guys, dollar has a lot more experience than a regular new player, knowing maps, weak points, and being able to estimate ranges. Even his current gameplay is considered above average for new players.
As a f2p who has been "playing" (with absolutely 0 consistency to the point where a week of grinding China almost got me to the same BR as my "main") since March/May 2013, welcome to the grind hell.

I have started playing war thunder like 3 days ago and I got to say it's kinda tough seeing my tank firing bb bullets while getting sent into oblivion by just 1 bullet.
That "Contact 12 o clock" with the gun fire just hit differently

But for the real experience i feel like Dollar must be insanely drunk, half blindfolded and one- handed. I imagine my first hours and killed like one in the first hour, it took another 2 hrs to figure out where to shoot and i think more than 5-10 hrs to finally get useful and kill more than one per tank...
For over 80 hrs i now research my first 7.3 tank. Stock experience on another level 😂
I came across these videos a year or so ago and thought, WT looks fun I’ll give it a try, but won’t spend on any of the pay to win stuff. Quit after about a month or two, got to mid-4 BR if I remember correctly, it really is max depression haha this video really speaks to my experience
