I have explored DK with parents and own kids forever…there is no way, I will ever see all that I want, be it buildings, landscape or cultural heritage….you are doing far better than most….wish you enjoyed our little beautiful culture rich country for as long as possible, letting us enjoy your take on things….it is truly interesting……
It's a great place! Sometimes they have classical music concerts inside the place. It's some crazy acoustics, so if you're ever in the neighborhood you might check if they have one of those events.
Kalkgruberne IS pretty impressive. When I was invited by my friend and her mother tosee them I was like "m-yeah I guess it could be fun"... and it just blew me away. You have to go to know!
You guys are the greatest ! You have really embraced the Danish way of living. At first I thought you were only interested in Copenhagen, but you have traveled to all parts of Denmark, small towns and islands and remote locations. Amazing. You should have some of the local residents teach you how to pronounce names of local sites i Danish, and trust me, I know how difficult the vowels are to foreigners. I worked on the restoration about 20 years ago. It was only for a few weeks, but it was during the winter so I used the cave to warm up. The temperature is quite consistent all year around, so it's nice place to go at any time. Next time you visit the area, try Dollerup bakker it's really cool and you can see the remaining features from the ice age carved in the hills.
Mønsted was probably my fiercest culture shock within Denmark, moving from Central Copenhagen to Viborg. Complete 180 with Techno-blasting scooters, "HalBal (barnbal)", tractor pulling and all that belongs to Mid-Jutlandish provincial life Edit: Also, this scary game, was it Until Dawn or maybe Firewatch? :-]
I live in northern jutland. No one got licenses for scooters, but instead they had licenses to drive tractors, and by default they could then drive scooters 😅

NEXT vacation, Mariager Saltdiapir!! in Hvornum or Læsø Saltsyderi (which is best in the summer) Proposing or gladiators..I'd vote for music, bc the acoustics are just, wow! - although modern music might make too many reverberations?? maybe classical, would be a better choice? Wonderful guys. You are great story tellers and great advocates for Denmark. Have you been to Rudolh Tegner Museum and statue park at Dronningemølle in the northern Zealand? The statue park is free and it kind of reminds me of a landscape in Jylland. The museum is inside a big concrete building. It's a lovely place to visit and even quite close to Lyngby. Find a nice day in a weekend. I believe a nice sunny Autumn day would be lovely. The museum closes for the Winther at October 24 so there is still some weekends to to consider this year.

When I visited Mønsted Kalkgruber as a child there were copies of classical statues in some of the caves........and I'm a bit saddened by the fact that you didn't mention that some of the caves are used to mature a certain kind of cheese called Grubeost - you would be able to peek into the storage. The area where they keep the cheese was the area painted yellow on the map you looked at when entering. Besides that, it was interesting to hear about this place from a foreigner's perspective (loved the Zelda reference btw XD) and I like the fact that you take the time to visit places in Denmark that to my knowledge seem to be lesser-known among foreigners. If you're into naval history I would recommend visiting Strandingsmuseum St George in Thorsminde (West Jutland) - they apparently have the largest collection in the world of everyday items used by the British navy in the 19th century.
Yeah we never got that far in the caves. I tend to get distracted by taking video and lose track of time and location in the caves. We didn’t mention mostly because we didn’t see it so it passed our minds when we were talking later. It was a fun place to visit though and a great day during our holiday in Jylland.
Actually only a walk away (I visited both some years ago) there´s another chalk mine, I think mostly known as hiding place for a gang of local robbers, who got punished after being caugth, many years ago. But during my many years of long distance walking in Belgium, we often met bats flying round the lampposts during nights, and I also did get a plan for making a house for the bats in Mønsted. Sadly I never got to actually making a home for them.

I love bats 😁. We had bats in our garden when I still lived in a house and it was nice sitting outside in the evening watching them catch insects. But my favorite experience was watching 450,000 bats leave their home in Carlsbad Caverns, NM to hunt for food.
Im so jealous you've gotten to go to Carlsbad! I want to go there and Bracken Cave. They flyouts at both look amazing. Getting to see the flying foxes fly out in Port Douglas Australia was a bucket list though! I was so excited to see them fly over our air bnb! - M

On my next visif only a few hundred bats left the cave, as the park ranger explained, they had been "on strike" for a few days. I have also visited Bat Cave in North Carolina, but herd you ars not allowed to enter the cave. Btw did you visit the cheese storage in Mønsted?
I've been waiting for this since you mentioned it. Went there as a kid and found it so impressive with the bats... Also got some good cheese from there. Edit: when I was a kid, I once found a small bat in some bushes, but I had always been warned how they may have rabies, so had to go get gloves.. anyway after a bit of water it was ready to fly again, so it all ended well.
you need to read up on these guided tours ;) you did notmention the cinema theater down there and the enourmes cheese storage where they mature the "grubeost", and the concert auditorium, and the 60 km worth of tunnels, it is the largest in europe, i know only 4 km of tunnels are used for the walk, but next time you should take the train tour :) aaaanyhooo.. i love your trips outside copenhagen... keep them coming *thumbs up*
Used to nightfish for crawfish during the summerholiday when I was a kid, and bats would fly aournd the lakes we went to. When we got boored we'd catch them but throwing a hat in the air and they'd mistake it for prey I geuss and get caught in them when the fell down. Never killed them, just a way to waste time when we were boored. I guess I gave away that I'm old^^
Have you guys ever been to Valby, København. It's quite the leap from Mønsted, but it is an old worker livelihood of Copenhagen with a lot of history. I believe you've visited Carlsberg Bryggeri which is there, but the history surrounding Valby itself has some deep cultural roots in our society and is also the home to Nordisk Film which among many other things also produced the "Olsen Banden" movies which are considered an enormous part of our media (tv/movie) history. There is "Valby Lokalhistorisk informations center" quite close to Nordisk film Studie, if you want someone to give you an indepth look into the local history of Valby. It is also quite possible that you can get a tour of Nordisk film while you're there.
I may not have been older than 5 back then, but I remember this GYNORMOUS stock of cheese. Funny what tends to stick, while at same time I couldn't tell you what I ate yesterday 😄 ! Hi :) There is also a great Limestone Mine near Rebild...... Thingbæk Kalkminer ...... where there is some statues and special a big statue of the big bull as to be seen in Aalborg. In this mine they do also have small music koncerts and events though the year. :) Btw... I do play a game called Minecraft, and the mines in this game is more scary than the ones in real life. :)
You're really putting alot of danes to shame. I bet you've seen more places in Denmark than 90% or all danes but on the other hand you're great inspiration to get out there visit alot of these places in the next holiday (Efterårsferien)
Uh - Kolding is not "Sønderjylland" - it's "Sydjylland". Sønderjylland goes from Germany to the "Kongeå". I suppose that they often make classical music arrangement in Mønsted Kalkgruber and that should be spetacular.
