  • Dr. Phil delves into the very sensitive topic of discrimination. The news has reported claims of discrimination against white people in university admissions, graduation ceremonies, and college welcome weeks. Similar claims have been made in the workplace. Political commentator and activist Candace Owens contends that reverse discrimination does exist, while Dr. Luke Wood and Dr. John Pascarella disagree. PragerU podcast host Amala Ekpunobi and activist Danielle D’Souza say they believe America is obsessed with race. Comedian Tyler Fischer claims he was discriminated against in the entertainment industry because of race, and school teacher Alexis discusses teacher layoffs in Minneapolis. (21025)

As a black woman, I completely agree with Candace. We shouldn’t be pitied because of our skin color, we should be looked at as equals, and that includes equal opportunities for all races. If a white person is denied acceptance on the basis of their skin color, then that is discrimination. Diversity shouldn’t be forced, it should be accepted.

The worse thing we can do is pity someone wrongly. If someone is poor they are poor. No matter what color they are. The color of their skin didn’t nor shouldn’t have made their poor. It’s about poor choices. We all know some people are born into money. Which also doesn’t make them more intelligent just because their parents were. Working hard to get what you want is more fulfilling in more ways that money.

    • @katiem4539
      @katiem4539 ปีที่แล้ว +39

It’s not about pitying someone. This stemmed from situations like this… in 1972 when there was a black man with a doctorate and 10 years experience, a white boss would still not hire him solely because he was black, he would hire a white man with no degree because he trusted him more, based on race. Affirmative action was counter to negative action. Affirmative action would give the black man with a doctorate a tiny bit of a (deserved) chance to be considered for the position. That was necessary in a time when many companies would throw out black applications and avoid hiring any blacks simply because they didn’t agree with the civil rights bill, and real racism existed. It exists today still, but in a lesser form. We certainly should alter these policies to ensure that it keeps with the times, but affirmative action at a point in our history was necessary. That is a fact.

Christmas presents are given by people who you have created a close bond with. It is the people who you appreciate, not the gift even if it's something you wanted. This can be easily demonstrated by giving out a bunch of free stuff to people you don't know. It will not be appreciated the same way as if a beloved family member had given it to them. People, by nature, misuse things that they did not earn. One of the most glaring examples of this is the number of people who have won the lottery and it ruined their lives.

She is 100% spot on. When you lower the standards for a specific set of people to allow them access to a college or university, you set them up for failure. The only way to ensure they don't fail is to then lower the standards for the entire university that they're attending, in order to facilitate their graduation. Which means that degree isn't nearly as meaningful as it once was, because the quality of the students attaining it drops significantly.
Here's an extreme example, 5 high schools in Baltimore aren't producing a single student who's competent at math. Now if they were allowed into Harvard because they were black, and then began failing, it wouldn't be because they were black. It would be because they didn't have the necessary educational background in order to succeed. So then if you lower the standards to the point that they could succeed, thereby lowering the standards for everyone else, Harvard would cease to be the revered educational institution it's become known for. Instead a Harvard degree would be worth less than a University of Phoenix online degree.

Food for thought: Why is there so much focus on affirmative action but not legacy admissions? It is estimated that anywhere from 25 to 35% of admitted students at Ivy League schools come from a family with a legacy status. And you know who those students typically are? Wealthy White students. You shouldn't be admitted to a school based on family alumni status or because you have wealth. Candace is absolutely right here. We know that standards for entry into universities are raised and lowered based on race and ethnicity. This is why affirmative action is on the verge of being eliminated because Asians are being discriminated by these schools by making them reach a higher standard for testing and demoting them for “undesirable personality traits.” When you lower the bar for admissions and then level the bar for all students after acceptance it is not surprising to see students who were accepted with subpar academics immediately falling behind. Also at the freshman level no professor is identifying students as “thugs” or “degenerates” at an individual level because those freshman classes usually take place in an auditorium with 300 students in it. My professors always said the same thing. “Come to the class, do the reading and you’ll pass the test.” What do the majority of the students do? They don’t show up, they don’t do the homework and then they complain when they fail the final.

There is something I like to call the Spectrum of Hate. A spectrum shaped like circle! It's core is egoism, the belief that you are better than everyone else, or that you're more entitled and so on.
Every form of hatred can be traced right back to egoism.
This spectrum helps to explain more perceivably how and why people unite within their hatred. It's because their egoes are similar and because they hate the same things. That's when you get things like sexism and racism. As long as egoism remains to fuel the core of that spectrum, you'll always hate someone or something, for absolutely no good reason.
The best solution to rid the world of all it's problems, is to simply stop hating. And to stop hating, we need to learn to love more than just ourselves and our immediate surrounding friends and family. If every human on this planet can learn to love and respect everyone else, then wars would end. And we'd have that Utopia we've always wanted.

Some people, such as myself, are late bloomers. This is why I feel very strongly that every single child should be
given an art education because not only would does one learn academically as you go through various art projects, and later on in life you will fall back on your art when you need to take a step. Many many artists did not excel academically, in fact many flunked. Our whole educational system is based on Western Civilization values, i.e, logic. And many artists worked in low level jobs to support their art career, musicians, etc. In Austria all the arts are funded by the government. I guess they learned the hard way, as Hitler was Austrian and was denied art school. I feel very strongly against insisting every child excel academically. I was a very bad student academically and have had a rich artistic life, I am self-supporting, and over 70 -- self-educated. I also feel when they are against affirmative action, maybe they forget that women were denied teaching. Women, the only way they could get an academic career was to become a nun. And let's not forget veterans, many got their educations on the Government programs. So I don't think we can put people in one basket.

America was the second major nation to abolish slavery, England was the first.
Chattel slavery still exists today, but it doesn't exist in the west.

The direct correlation between the facts and feelings are that people like this guy should start a business where they can have people come to them to feel good. Take making people feel good out of the equation to get into colleges. And allow the children no matter what color they are into these universities. It is illogical to allow a child because of the color of your skin into a university over a child especially a white child who has been working so hard and is smart and deserves to be there!

Affirmative action is actually offensive. I don't need to be rewarded on my background which has nothing to do with my intelligence or hard work. Give me an award that I earn, not one for being "the first woman of color who got hired in X role" like, condescending much ? ☠

I'm not American, not living in the US and I'm not a conservative either. But I'm completely agree with Candace on this matter. How in the world that man's take out on Candace's words was as if her seeing the black students in question as inferiors? English isn't my first language, yet all I can see is either he spoke that way just for the sake of hem being in the opposite of whatever she's saying, or he's just being himself - a person who can't comprehend reasons.

“You’re making the assumption that black students are academically inferior”
She literally did not say that but ok
Also there’s a section of this episode where a white comedian said he was told that by venues they couldn’t book a show because he was white and when the comedian asked the college professor if that was ok for him to be told that, the professor gave a roundabout answer to a straightforward question

I’m of mix race, and I teach undergraduate classes. It is unfortunate for me to say that most of my black students indeed underperform. I’m not racist of them, I route for them. But the truth is that many of them are not prepared for what is required of them at the college level and as a result their grades suffer

I feel like, how did these people become leaders and policy makers?? This seems to be common sense to me ... The smallest child can understand giving people an upper hand doesn't help them on the long run...instead give them the consolation and drive to achieve even if they are at a disadvantage.
