2 minutes in and I’m so glad you made it a point to highlight production design. People forget the color is only 10% of the look. Good cinematography starts in preproduction and being intentional about what’s being captured and how it’s being captured.
I feel like i achieved something by one-upping this in terms of achieving the look with a way simpler node tree and only using basic corrections. I'm proud because your tutorials got me into color grading, and I managed to do my own thing independent of your vid that i'm satisfied with. I used a piece of sample footage from RED of a woman with reddish lipstick sitting in a convertible with reddish-pinkish seats 1. Temp & Tint (cooler temp, correct tint) 2. Editable Spline curves (Get kinda lifted blacks, very bright but not contrasty or clipping) 3. Hue vs. Hue (Nudge the reds and violets toward that rosy pink, put a little teal in the blues, nudge skintones just a bit blushier than the skintone vector) 4. Hue vs. Sat (Saturate everything but the red-orange area, if we humans see normal skintones but vivid everything-else, we believe it.) 5. Lum vs sat (Darker areas more saturated, lighter areas less so for a pastel look) 6. Softlight glow (low spread, subtle bloom) 7. Add glow (high spread, super low blend, kinda hazy light)
just watched a video about their set design and you're so right about the fact that it's production design. vivid colors, lot of light and alexa 65. that's it. there isn't much happening on the grading side. great video tho as always
What about the blue??? No one thinks about the blue hue?? 😂.. Thanks a lot for your dedication, I love the way you talk and explain about the matter. I work as a vfx composer but I've always loved color grading, so i'm learning a lot with your tutorials and breakdowns. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
We should share this video to educate our clients who throw us bunch of low quality shots and tell us to create “That Look”, “ this look”. I try to explain them their production design, light set up, costume weren’t proper to adobt that look and I rceive “Uhhh, you can’t do it and finding excuses”… Peh! Everybody who has access to some mumbo jumbo camera believes he is Tarantino!
Seriously though, I had a wide shot with white people wearing white clothes in front of a beige wall and they asked why there isn't much separation in the shot. Like are you kidding me
I'm glad you brought up TDK as a reference. I had a question about the lighting. Do you think that the final exposure is what they shot on set? Or do you think it was much brighter but when it came to color, when the exposure was dropped everything fell into place because of the light shaping and set design done on set? I'm having trouble explaining to the DP that we should shape the light to cast shadows the way we want, but then we have to brighten the shadow areas a bit so that nothing gets crushed in post and everything looks good and not mushy/crushed. Another thing I noticed is that if they did in fact shoot it that dark, wouldn't there be a bunch of noise in the image? I'm tempted to make a LUT that has the contrast cranked and then use that which will then force the DP to light everything brighter which will then give the colorist more space in post. Thoughts on all this? Can you explain it a little better to me please?
It doesn't bother me could be reflection off the wall. Obviously, we can roto it out but that was the whole point that this situation is not ideal of such look.
Loved your analysis of the movie and explaining it to us how they achieved that total Barbie look. Cannot wait for Oppenheimer which critics are calling a true modern masterpiece of film making. These both have totally different looks and feels for Summer Block Busters. Glad that Hollywood got this creative with Barbie. It makes you smile as a colorist. 😀😀💗💗💗💗💗 for Barbie.
When we get 500 LIKES I will release the Oppenheimer Look tutorial. 😀 So smash it. 👍🏾

Not only I want an Oppenheimer look, but I'd watch any Hoyte Van Hoytema film look ! :p
Agreed.
Yeah!
Really interesting how the art direction is the key in most of our colored sequences !!!
absolutely loved the more advanced layering going on in your node structure. thx for another incredibly insightful breakdown :)
You're very welcome!
Great explanation of how to tell a story via art direction and colour grading choices.
Thanks so much!
Please have a look at Asteroid City! The grade is so pumped I'd swear it actually breaks in one or two scenes in the movie.
I have noticed that.
What scenes are you referring to? I havent noticed that but I would love to see the scenes.

Incredible how your shirt is matching the look haha! This man has really eye for details 💪
Haha. Good eye, my guy.
Night version of oppenheimer look is amazing. I dont know how to get those yellow tones. But that looks great.

could you have used hsl for pulling pinks to the barbie look?
What is the keystroke for subtracting one "yellow"? Looks super handy, I didn't know that was a thing.
Go under color menu and the printer lights it should tell you. I have it on my big panel.
