Tbh I think the 1990's truly started in 1991, with bands like Nirvana and Green Day adding that 90's edge and braty style, and shows like the early nicktoons being less restricted on what they wanted to be and were more free in a sense (aka when cartoons started to take more risks and played it less safe)
I'm going to assume he's talking about 90's trends in animation and for that I would agree. What we call 90's cartoons started in the late 80's with Duck Tales and the 2000's style of animation didn't really start until animation started becoming unprofitable.
huh, i was born in 2001, and i have slight memories of this show from when i was a toddler. the fact that it had most of its run in the early 2000s like you said explains why. i was honestly shocked hearing this was a 90s nicktoon.
I mean, when it comes to that label, you mainly remember the stuff that went on forever. Rugrats, Fairly OddParents...of course, SpongeBob ain’t stopping anytime soon...
It's like playing Earthbound but your drunk as hell, and think your hanging out with Tony Hawk. Which would probably be more entertaining then this show.
PashedMotatoes the animation and art style r similar 2 recess, along with Otto being rebellious like TJ, Sam being a nerd like Gus, and Lars being a jerk like Lawson. Although I c no similarities between knd and rocket power besides maybe Numbuh 4 and Otto being a bit similar.
I think the reason Sam hangs out with them is largely because of Reggie. And Reggie probably only hangs out with Otto because he's her brother. Plus, it's shown that Sam's a really good hockey goalie. One thing I respected the show for was that adults were often shown to be reasonable and that rules were there for a reason. There's one where Tito was babysitting them and he began cramping their style, so they ran off while he was sleeping so they wouldn't hurt his feelings. He caught them and said that while he understands needing time away from him, it wasn't okay to run off without telling him. Even Mr. Stimpleton, who was the most unreasonable adult on the show, had his moments, like where he took Otto golfing because Otto owed him for fixing his bike, and they both learned from each other (Mr. Stimpleton learn to be more aggressive in sports and Otto learned to be more patient, each learning that there was a time for both).
I can without a doubt... I still unironically love this show for how over-the-top 90's it was. It's just so stupidly glorious in how it revels in the slang, the scenarios, the character archetypes, and the extreme sports that there's a certain charm in going back to watch almost any given episode no matter how cheesy and/or cliche it may be.
i think hes being a bit harsh on it..yes is it hard to relate to these asshole stupid naive kids as an adult sure but thats not the point...its a kids cartoon...watch it from the pov of a 10 year old....rocket power is not made for someone over the age of 12...it really is not..

Yeah, Enter isn't a huge fan of many 90s cartoons it seems.
I actually used to really like rocket power, though to be fair I was in early elementary school. I really empathized with them I guess? mostly because at that time and age we didn't have a lot of agency, so my sister the neighbor kids and I would end up stuck playing with whoever was in the vicinity with whatever toys our parents got for us. which for kids in the late 90s early 2000s mostly meant 'indoor/sit down' toys like dolls, board games, and PlayStation, or 'outdoor/active' toys like balls, bikes, skates, and random plastic sports equipment. usually all mostly from yardsales. So in general everyone would get together in the middle of the street you'd figure out how and what to play together that day, with little accounting for things like if any of you actually liked each other that much. I guess nowadays when people watch shows or anime and they point at characters and are like "Ugh how are they childhood friends?! they've got nothing in common and don't even really like each other! why do they feel the need to put up with each other?!" I don't really get it because I can look at them and be like "yeah that one acts like my friend john, ugh I hate that guy. wonder how he's doing? I should look for him on Facebook, see if his butts in jail yet" or "Yep, an absolute unrepentant brat, reminds me of my friend Sarah. She was a nasty piece of work, spoiled rotten! Haven't heard from her in a while, we should get lunch next time she's in town." It sounds weird but those types of friendships happen pretty often and naturally, and not necessarily because you like each other. it's more like neighbor kid solidarity? It's sorta like how siblings go through patches where they fight a lot; just because they don't like each other doesn't mean they aren't family. only in this case it 'just because we don't like each other doesn't mean we aren't friends'. to be fair it's pretty flawed thinking, but it's also the thought process of a group of under-tens who are stuck together so of course it is.
0:50 I don't know if I agree with that. I feel that 2001 was were the 90s ended, thanks to 9/11, the rise of internet websites we still use today, and Sega leaving the console market. And the year 2000 was more of a transitional period. As for the "started in 1987" thing. While it is true certain certain elements of the 90s started to establish themselves in the late 80s. Like Extreeme sports, 16 bit and 3D video games, The Simpsons, and Grunge music. But none of those things were taking the culture of the time by storm yet. From 87 - 89, Rubix cubes, arcades, Nintendo, family game shows, and hair metal were still the dominant driving force of culture at the time. But like how 2000 was a transitional period into the new melena, 1990 was a transitional year from the 80s culture into the 90s culture. It was the year, many old 80s fads started to die (like Rubix cubes, and shoulder pad dresses), The Sega Genesis started to grow in popularity, the first digitally animated film (Rescuers Down Under) released, The official run of the Simpsons began (remember, that Christmas special was supposed to be the series finally), Reality TV shows started showing up, and the first Grunge album to go gold (Alice in Chains - Facelift) released. But it was still a transitional year since Nintendo was still dominating the video game market, Hair metal songs like Cherry Pie were still huge, and marketable family friendly shows were still a thing. 1991 was where the 90s officially began since that was when Grunge killed Hair metal (thanks to Nirvana and Metallica selling out), The 16-bit war with Sega and Nntendo began (thanks to Sonic), and cutesy family shows like the Cosby show started to get over thrown by shows like Seinfeild and The Simpsons. Sorry for the wall of text, but That's just my two cents But the poetic history of trends that magically start and die when a decade begins actually does have some truth to it in regards to the 50s through the 2000s (I actually don't see how this was the case with the 2010s though)
I feel like the 90s really started around 93/94, the fashion became more relaxed and colors became more subdued. Also the music moved from new wave and pop to more grunge, gangster rap and eurodance.
I just want to say thank you. After watching this video youtube recommended to me three different uploads of the fish taco scene, all of them at least five plus years old.
I actually might make a small arguement that the popular culture of the 1990s started further into 1991 when Nirvana hit the scene but that may be more related to the music and style trends. Just a thought.
If I understand this show's intent properly, I'm pretty sure Sam was put in to round out the group of friends so it wasn't only made up of active, sport-sy kids, especially with two of them being so similar to each other as is. Besides, I have to disagree with the notion that the out of shape, nerdy kid wouldn't have any desire to hang out with this group (or vice versa), instead flocking only to others like him. One thing many TV shows get wrong when displaying school kids is the idea that everyone breaks down into neat, tidy groups with rigid boundaries between them. That they segregate based on similar interests and outward appearances, and those are your only options to make friends with. Life is much more nebulous than that, as one person out of a small group might have some friends from an entirely unrelated clique that the others don't quite understand - "How can you be friends with them?" Or on the flip side (pun intended), one kid who would by outward appearances and interests belong to a group not only not being one of the gang, but having no interest. It's almost like personality traits matter too or something. Back to Sam, though he doesn't have the ability to perform extreme sports, it doesn't mean he isn't interested in them. Plus, I imagine he does want to play some of the games they do too, but likely gets bored with it faster than they would. From my own experiences, that sounds pretty spot-on.
He did it a couple of days ago with Hey Arnold!, but the football head got kicked away by TH-cam. I saw it on Mr. Enter's official site. You should, too. Link to video in the Kablam video.
The show is very overhated to be honest. All people keep criticizing for is the outdated slang yet don't say anything about other cartoons doing the same thing. Shit when you think about it recess, kim possible, and the proud family are full of outdated slang yet no one says anything about them. It's a weird nitpick in my opinion. It's one thing if you just don't like the show because of the characters (cool) or you just think it's boring but that whole "outdated slang" shit is dumb to me.
One of the more decent reviews I've seen as I went up this marathon. You made good points here like on why this show doesn't hold up that well these days. Giving credit where it's due, this was radical (heh heh).
The problem is that this was a time were people assumed kids were stupid and not nuance enough to care about a show being a bit more deep, thats why alot of shows are shallow and dont make sense compared to more modern cartoons that take kids seriously.
That does seem like a safe starting year. That was also the year of other 90's-defining things like: • Sonic the Hedgehog and the first real Console Wars (June 23) • The creation of the World Wide Web (August 6) • The three original Nicktoons and the influence those had on television (August 11) • Beauty And The Beast, considered by many to be the peak of the Disney Renaissance (November 22) • The end of the Cold War (December 26) And a whole lot of other things. 1991 was a very big year.

If you play the Rocket Power theme out of context, you could pass it off as a sports-themed superhero show
the rocket power theme alone is actually pretty bad ass
Athletes are already similar to super heroes.
I'm surprised it took this long for people to see the similarities.
I think the theme matches the pitch they had. A group of kids who are into extreme sports. This is pretty much what I imagine would be playing in the head of an adrenaline junkie who does bone shattering parkour on top of roof tops with roller blades.
That's the spirit!
That would have been better than the "rocket power" we actually got.
“Adults trying to be hip with the kids” that’s literally at least half the candidates running in the 2020 election 😂 Pete, Kamala, Cory, Amy, Beto, Biden, etc, etc

Joe Biden - Thinks that he is still young and cool, yet he always says the stupidest things and offends a lot of people while doing it.
Elizabeth Warren - she is literally using virtue signaling, feminism, and her "native american heritage" to try to win and appeal to women, when everyone knows that she looks like a clown, and not the funny ones.
Bernie Sanders- He has no qualifications for being president, he literally thinks that weed and socialism will make him a good president, but in reality he will fail and look like an idiot.

All I remember about this show is Tito. And I can’t even remember how he sounded or what his phrases were, I just remember that he was there.

Haven't heard from her in a while, we should get lunch next time she's in town."
It sounds weird but those types of friendships happen pretty often and naturally, and not necessarily because you like each other. it's more like neighbor kid solidarity? It's sorta like how siblings go through patches where they fight a lot; just because they don't like each other doesn't mean they aren't family. only in this case it 'just because we don't like each other doesn't mean we aren't friends'. to be fair it's pretty flawed thinking, but it's also the thought process of a group of under-tens who are stuck together so of course it is.
That ending made me think my earbuds went out for some reason

0:50
I don't know if I agree with that.
Sorry for the wall of text, but That's just my two cents
But the poetic history of trends that magically start and die when a decade begins actually does have some truth to it in regards to the 50s through the 2000s
(I actually don't see how this was the case with the 2010s though)

I actually might make a small arguement that the popular culture of the 1990s started further into 1991 when Nirvana hit the scene but that may be more related to the music and style trends. Just a thought.
Musically, the 90s began in 1991. Fashion-wise, it started in 1992.
I do have fond memories of Raymundo and Tito.
