    I live for food plot videos. I grew up on a farm. My Dad passed away a couple of years ago and with him the farming side of the farm. Discing and dragging a food plot brings back memories for me. Makes me feel like I'm farming again.

    Great video,, The small food plots like this are the best. They are in reality what most hunters are capable of producing.. Not the huge fields of deer related food.

    I am hunting on private property. They don't allow me to cut trees down. But I can put very small food plots in. Most of mine are 6'x 6' really tiny food plots. I the deer really love them I haven't seen any turkeys yet. My husband think I am crazy. But anything is better than nothing. What do you think.

    Have you ever used your earthway for beans? I have one and it has on the bottom for almost every seed except beans I was wondering what to set the opening to.

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've not used it for beans sorry.

    • @jeffpescinski8374
      @jeffpescinski8374 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried the earthway. It failed. Soybeans would lodge in the disk and quit turning. So I just broadcast them. Helps to burry them a little.

    I have a very wet/swampy area that I want to put Imperial Whitetails No Plow plot. In some areas it is about 2 inches deep but wet/muddy everywhere. Do you think it would grow?

  • @gavinsmitty23
    @gavinsmitty23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So I hunt on a river bottom and the soil is rather muddy. For instance my trail I walk on in pretty much above the ankle mud on some spots just from me walking on it. When it rains it will stay on the ground ,in some spots, for a day or so depending on how much rain we had. It's pretty much cedar trees down there and not much of a food source. I really want to make a food plot but I'm not sure of anything will grow in a muddy soil. I heard turnips will but not sure. Any ideas? Maybe if I take a soil test. Not sure. Thanks.

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've honestly not had to deal with that. I think once you get something established it will help with the muddy conditions. Im sure turnips would. If its not flooded by water all the time I would bet clover would work too.

    • @gavinsmitty23
      @gavinsmitty23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huntin Grounds I guess trial and error would probably be the best answer. Thanks!

  • @keethpoop9797
    @keethpoop9797 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The property im hunting has had a forest fire, so there are no live trees, no big openings, and no food sources established. Is there any way I could plant a food plot(the soil is also very sandy and i cant access the site with tools)?

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly sounds like did the work for you. With no trees being alive and the forest floor cleared by the burning too, you should have a huge explosion of new native grasses, forbs, and saplings. You are going to have a deer buffet everywhere.

    • @keethpoop9797

    I tried to make a small food plot of clover and chicory for my brother (I live elsewhere) last year, but I don't think it got enough sunlight and a soil sample would probable be of great help. Hopefully we will work on another in a larger area and try the other spot again this year using some of your ideas.

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are on the right track. You'll need more sunlight and pushing the trees back will make sure the tree roots don't compete for water with your plot b/c they will win.

    • @jeffpescinski8374
      @jeffpescinski8374 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get a soil test. I am trying something new. Buckwheat and cowpeas. They dont require good soil and can grow in low ph soils. Trying this to build up the soil with organic matter and phosphorus. Thats if the deer dont eat it all. Thsts usually my problem. Over grazing.

  • @jasonherron4199
    @jasonherron4199 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Steven, I didn't see any lime or fertilizer. Did you do a soil analysis or just not show that part.

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Herron no soil analysis. I just put a little bit of triple 10 to give it a boost. My soil will improve itself as it builds itself up from decomposing each year.

    • @jasonherron4199
      @jasonherron4199 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huntin Grounds Yes, but if the PH is off due to the acidity from the forrest floor your clover won't grow well.

      I like to mulch the leaves. You might have a lack of soil to seed contact though. The mulch helps hold the moisture. Read somewhere ashes will raise soil ph. It smart to blow off the leaves if you have growth starting.

    Next time try to mulch the leaves with an old mulching mower. Instead of trying to get rid of something that will blow back with the next storm, use it as fertilizer. Mulched leaves make great fertilizer for a lawn, would do the same for your food plot.

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yeah I've done that in the past but there is no way to get a mower to this plot.

    • @keithh7483

    • @pastorjohn65
      @pastorjohn65 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huntin Grounds what kind? triple 13? Clover doesn't need the N, correct?

    • @HuntinGrounds
      @HuntinGrounds  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HARMZEY ??? No it will produce its own but use what you have. As long as you don't over fertilize it won't hurt it. If you put too much it will burn it up

    • @jasonherron4199
      @jasonherron4199 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HARMZEY ??? Clover needs phosphorus. Steven is correct in that clover is legume like soy beans and will pull nitrogen out of the air. If you add too much it will burn it up or allow weed or grass growth. something like a 0-20-0 fertilizer would be best but is hard to find. I use 12-12-12 and lime to balance PH. Steven is letting the floor balance the PH itself, which is cheaper but harder and takes longer. Clover needs a PH somewhere between 6.5 and 7. Most wooded areas are 4 to 6 to start (acidic).

    • @pastorjohn65
      @pastorjohn65 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Herron I lovr using clover, very easy to plant & deer love it, been struggling with weeds in it though (even after mowing & the Clethodin only kills the grass). Keep up the great work & if you could do some clover maintenance "tips & tricks" that would be great!
