    Note: if all companies would actually label what their cables can do on the cable itself that would go a long way. The standardized labels exist, they're just not being used.

      @@SourCyanide The video misses the point of USB-C. It's not on cable to rule them all, its one connector. The protocol is what varies. If you want a cable to carry the 100W (actually much more now), video, i2C, sound, HID, and the dozens of other protocols, you might find that cable is thick, short, and heavy - because the PD spec cable is going to be a thick cable, and if you need it to carry the extra for speed, it's several pairs of twisted wire as well as the power cable, so you have just doubled the thickness and weight of the cable, then you will be complaining your device broke from using an impractical cable for minor tasks.

    The non-data-transfer cables are actually very useful. Some public chargers can actually be hacked so that you're at risk of transferring some bad shit to your phone. Exact, it's a feature. He calls himself a nerd gear head but doesn't understand this very important point 🤦‍♂️

    • @JarrodFrates
      @JarrodFrates ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The risk of public chargers is minimal. For one, the odds of connecting to a malicious charger is very low. For another, it has to take advantage of a flaw in your specific phone. USB-related flaws (and even OTG command sequences) are usually extremely specific to individual OSes, if not individual models. If it's not taking advantage of a flaw to bypass security, you get a prompt asking if you want to trust the computer, a huge red flag for what should be just power. Finally, a malicious public charger that attacks connected devices has to have a mechanism to store and/or transmit collected data. The ways of transmitting this are limited and leave evidence, and the presence of the malicious device makes for additional evidence of the crime. There's a reason that no such devices have been found in the wild. In over a dozen years since the first reports of such attack capabilities from researchers, not one verified malicious station has been identified.
      If you're that worried, get a USB condom that allows power but not data. You don't need an entirely separate cable.

    • @alephcake
      @alephcake ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@JarrodFrates Yeah, that is in fact true. Most if not all modern OSes are extremely secure and by default Android will just not allow any data going in or out unless you specifically tell it to, but it's better to be safe than sorry as they say. I'm not entirely sure if those attacks are all that common and I assume they aren't but as a security standard I wouldn't be mad seeing something like this. And yeah "USB condoms" are great for this already.

      Ah, **USB-C cables**-what an *absolute joke* of a standard in the world of technology! You know, the "one cable to rule them all," they said. One reversible, universally compatible, super-fast solution for every device under the sun. *Yeah, right.* Let me tell you what **really** happens.
      On paper, the USB-C **A-side** of the connector (you know, the one on the charger or the computer) is great. Rock-solid, reliable, fails approximately **zero** percent of the time. But that’s only **half** the story, folks, because the **C-side**-the part that connects to your device-fails at a rate that can only be described as nothing short of catastrophic. You want reliability? You get the *opposite*.
      We’re not talking about months of use here. Oh no. These cables have a **half-life** measured in **weeks,** not months. *Weeks.* Some fail **day one**, and by week three or four, nearly all are heading to the tech graveyard. And it's not a subtle failure where you see signs of wear and tear-no, these things just stop working. Power transfer? Forget about it. Data transfer? As if!
      Oh, and here’s the kicker: they don’t just die on their own quietly in the night. No, these cables have a way of taking your devices with them. After plugging and unplugging the connector a dozen times, the port on your device starts acting up. That pristine USB-C port on your phone or laptop? It’s basically getting ruined by this constant stream of dying cables. Soon, nothing fits properly. Your once-new port feels like it's been attacked by a swarm of defective connectors that wore it out in record time. Is this some hidden conspiracy to make us buy more devices? I wouldn't even be surprised.
      And don’t tell me this is some kind of *isolated* experience. **Everyone** I know who uses USB-C has this exact same story. It's hard to believe that this isn't universally acknowledged! It's the great silent malfunction of the modern era. We all go on pretending USB-C is great, when in reality, this thing is failing nearly **100 percent** of the time within a matter of days or weeks!
      So here's my question: **Why are we not talking about this?!** Why isn't this a top-tier tech scandal that gets splashed across headlines every day? Are we seriously just accepting that our cables will die within a month-if we’re lucky-and then possibly wreck our ports, too?
      Is it just me? Am I the only one plagued by a landfill's worth of USB-C cables that quit before the month is out? Or has this been your experience too? Tell me you haven’t faced this disaster every time you tried to charge your phone, transfer data, or use literally any device that now relies on this **inherently flawed standard**! Let's hear it! Let's get some acknowledgment that this is *the* worst standard to become so widespread in modern tech history!

    And don't forget that so many USB-C devices continue to use proprietary technology for charging. On phones you'll often need the original OEM power adapter for higher charging speeds because they decided to make something themselves instead of just using USB-PD. This IMO is a huge issue and one that somehow needs to be addressed.

    I mean this is exactly what they said it was going to do. Before USBC we had like 19 different form factors and all of these in all of those form factors, now we have one form factor with a shitload of variations instead of 19 with a shitload of variations it's still better. Now yes it would be amazing if the people who were actually creating these cables were properly labeling them with either the correct color code or the correct notation so that you could tell what your tables did at a glance. That part of the standardization has definitely not happened. And it would be nice if the USB standardization group actually had any power to fix that but they don't because it is such a big standard. It's what comes with something being as important as USB has become. Because as much as people might want to bitch about there being tons of different types of USB cables we also need all of those different types. Pretty much all of them serve a purpose and if we didn't have them people would create types of cables that aren't USBC to fill those purposes and we would be back exactly where we were. Life sucks.

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      What are these 19 different form factors of a USB plug? The only ones I'm aware of besides USB-C are A (which everything uses), B (which is basically only used by printers), Mini (which nothing uses anymore), and Micro (which used to be standard until USB-C decided to replace it for no particular reason). And yes, there are 3.0 versions of A, B, and Micro, but they're all backwards compatible with the previous versions.
      The idea that USB-C needed to be created in order to reduce the number of standards associated with USB is both idiotic and factually incorrect. There are still tons of devices in use that use the other connection types. Creating a new connector increments the total number of connector types by one. It doesn't eliminate any of them.
