Review: 2021 Kia K5 GT - Focused on Fun

  • I spend a week with the 2021 Kia K5 GT and find that it's one of the best picks out there if you're looking for a fun mid-size family sedan. With its strong 2.5T engine, fun wheelspin and great handling, it impresses from the first time you take it for a drive. Combine that with cool looks, one of the nicest interiors in the segment, and its value pricing thousands less than its competitors, and you have a package that's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a fun but practical daily driver. What do you think of the K5 GT? Thanks to Kia for providing this vehicle to review.

      I will never buy another Kia. Period. We contacted the Kia Corporate office to help with an issue we had after our car broke down on the side of the interstate 2 times after being serviced at 2 different Kia dealerships, Langdale Kia in Valdosta and Crown Kia in Saint Petersburg. Kia Corporate gave us the run around, telling us they would send our service request upper management to have it approved. After 3 weeks, they finally told us that no our car wasn’t under warranty! What?! It’s like they didn’t even read what we submitted. Kia doesn’t know how to fix their own vehicles and doesn’t care if they break down multiple times. This has been a horrible

    Matt!! I think I know why your HDA experiences have been sub-par. Have you gone in the settings in the instrument cluster, to the HDA page? There's an option to toggle between 'Lane Keeping Assist', 'Lane Departure Warning' and 'Off'. It was defaulted to 'Lane Departure Warning' in a press car I drove, but once I switched it to 'Lane Keeping Assist' and pushed the steering assist button on the steering wheel, it made a world of difference! It was acting like you have described your experiences to be, but once I changed that setting the ping ponging largely ceased on the highway with CC active.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting, thanks for the tip! Will the green steering wheel display on the gauge cluster for just the lane departure warning when I hit the wheel button? Regardless, I’ll be sure to dig into the settings on the next Hyundai/Kia model to make sure.

While I prefer my BULLITT and GT 500, if I wanted any number of cars, I’d first look for reviews here. I’m a seat fanatic and not much on comfort assessment but this didn’t lack content. His supporters fear becoming a minority or losing control so much that they will follow and listen to anyone that think as they do as you do. No longer with this country politics be ran by old white guys and eventually the republicans establishment will lose its control as the minority party that can’t win enough election to be a majority because of the shift in demographics. Ga for example is getting flooded with a plan to turn that state blue permanently. I myself is moving there to help shift the balance of power away form republican lol. Trump doesn’t give a damn about you or any other racist mind controlling hypocrites. He feeds off what you people believe in and just feed it back for support. Tx, ga, fl, nc will all soon be blue in a few short years because they are getting flooded with new demographics that are becoming the majority. Welcome to the new eventual America my friend lol

    I bought the very first K5 GT that my local dealership got in stock back in June and currently just hit 11k miles on it. Its an awesome daily driver and very well loaded with the GT1 package. My only complaint with mine is I get a small amount of interior rattle sometimes and it moves around to different areas. Most of it sounds like its in the headliner but i usually have music going anyways so most times i forget that it does it. Other than that it has been great and ive averaged 33-34 mpg in the warmer months, now that its colder I have been averaging around 29-30 mpg. My 19 Honda Accord Sport was the same way whenever the weather would get cold the mpg would drop. All in all a great car for the $36,000 price tag.

    • @BigTimeTrucker432
      @BigTimeTrucker432 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jcard_fpv6356 congratulations! I actually traded in the car shortly after this comment was made with only 12500 miles on it. The rattle didn’t get worse. I figured out where the main spot was that the main rattle was coming from. It was in the C pillar on the drivers side. The other ones weren’t really noticeable and only happened when it was cold. The main one didn’t really bother me. The car was great and it was fun. Only reason I traded it in was because I really wanted to daily a new pickup truck again. It fit me better. But I would recommend the K5 GT.

    • @BigTimeTrucker432
      @BigTimeTrucker432 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jcard_fpv6356 oh man you will love it. The thing is crazy quick. If it wasn’t for squealing the front tires off at launch it would be even quicker. But I actually liked that. No one at a stop light expects a plain Kia sedan to make the tires scream when the light turns green. 😂 The other big positive thing about it is that Kia actually recommends 87 octane gas for it. It doesn’t require premium like every other performance turbo 4 cylinder on the market. So you can save there.

    If you may, can you tell me how much more do you “feel” the bumps on the road with the GT compared to the GT line? Same thing with the seats. Is it just a difference in stitching or is the GT less comfortable? May have misunderstood you but it felt like one moment you said it’s the same as the GT line and then later you said the seats may feel a little stiff. If it’s the same as the gt line then that’s great because I ADORE the comfort of my GT line. Thank you!!!! Great review! I will be following along!

    • @MattMaranMotoring

      Hi Michael! I believe seats are the same as the GT-Line, and they aren't uncomfortable at all, they're just not pillowy soft either. A little on the firmer side. Suspension is a little firmer too but again, totally daily drivable, just a little sportier feeling than the GT-Line.

    Beating a dead horse here I know, but really a big miss making this an open diff, FWD car when you have that much power. Same issue with the Sonata N Line. And now I’m hearing the upcoming Kona N will be FWD, though that will probably have an LSD. I just don’t understand, they put AWD on lesser versions of these cars but not the performance models. They have it backwards.

    • @Andrew37213
      @Andrew37213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess would be that the combination of AWD and 290 HP would be coming close to Stinger territory, considering the 2022 base Stinger gets a new 300 HP 4 cylinder and optional AWD for about $5000 more. Add the roughly $2000 AWD option on the K5 GT and then the two cars are only $3000 apart with only a 10 hp difference... and you get a panoramic sunroof on the K5, not the Stinger, which is always a plus for me lol. But nonetheless, I 100% agree that this thing needs AWD, but I don’t think I see it happening in the future unfortunately. Hopefully I’m wrong though.

      It takes more engineering and money to make the AWD system work on these. There’s a price point they want to hit along with production targets that would make it profitable. That was pretty much their reasoning “it would be too expensive.” They could always put the Sorento/Santa Fe rear diff on it but again the price would be the same as a base Stinger GT Line. What’s the point.

      In this segment, mid-size sedan, the avg consumer spends anywhere between 26-31k, the most commonly purchased cars are the entry level engines.
      Thats why toyota gave the 2.5 camry awd but not the v6, nissan gave the 2.5 altima awd but not the 2.0t, and now Kia /hyundai only giving the 1.6t equipped cars awd options...
      They know they just sell more...

      Sound doesn’t have much to do with displacement, go listen to a 1.4L fiat 500 abarth, those sound insane. Has more to do with how the exhaust manifold is designed in conjunction with cylinder firing order. Subaru gets the rumble from exhaust pulses colliding in the collector of an unequal manifold. My Speed6 is another good example of a meaty, burbly, sounding 4 cylinder... you can make an i4 sound identical to a flat 4 by designing an exhaust manifold that does the same thing. 1320 made a UEL for the d series civic, you’d swear an STi is coming down the road lol.

    My thoughts: I don't care for the black grille and signature Kia pinched center nose grille. I wonder if there more were chrome in the grille if that would enhance the appearance. Daytime lights with angulation are a little over-stylized in my opinion. Kia is like Avis---we try harder, and I think Kia warranty, creativity, and price points are a nice benefit for the consumer. Overall the car is very sporty, and a nice opportunity vis a vis the Honda/Toyota brands. I don't care for the mostly black grille in the Honda Accord either. The Mazda 6 in Soul Red color would be my choice of the vehicles discussed on this video, with pros and cons discussed by Matt. The hills and snow in the background from Pittsburgh area are wonderful and a nice break from the other automobile videos. A huge thanks to Matt Maran for another great car review.

    Very good review, Matt. A few points...
    Putting optional AWD on the K5 GT would eliminate the wheel hop and torque steer in the vehicle. That, however, ain't happenin'. Not only would it risk cannibalizing sales of the Stinger (especially next year when the Stinger gets the same 2.5L turbo of the K5), high performance versions of mainstream midsize sedans don't sell well enough to justify the investment. Thus, both the Nissan Altima VC-turbo and the Camry V6 offer only FWD while their lower trim, less powerful versions offer versions of AWD. Adding substantial weight and nearly $2000 to the MSRP of those sedans simply cannot be justified in terms of sales. (Note that fewer than 5% of Camrys are sold with the V6 engine. If Toyota offered a V6 Camry with AWD it would likely amount to no more than 1500 vehicle sales in a full year. Imagine how slow the sales of an AWD K5 GT would be.)
    On the other hand, failure to offer a limited slip differential (at least an electronic version) on an FWD vehicle with nearly 300 HP and over 300 ft lbs of torque is a major weakness. You may find wheel hop and torque steer to be "fun." That's not especially surprising from a Mustang owner where 300 plus HP and torque is routed to the rear wheels but its a major obstacle for high speed handling on twisting roads in an FWD vehicle.
    The K5 GT is an impressive vehicle. The 2.5L turbo engine found in the KIA, the Sonata N-Line, the Genesis G80, the GV80 and the KIA Sorento has been universally praised in all its applications. I suspect the same will be true when it shows up in the next generation Stinger. But without AWD or an LSD that puts the power down efficiently, it's not as good as it could be.
