My mum peps the soil in her containers like a week before she puts plants in it. She mixes the fertiliser at the step you say not to. But not all of it. She also.added it to the top as well with leave litter or grass.clippings etc. :)
Awesome! I’m sure that works great, that may be the way to get the best of both worlds, the plants get heavily fertilized right when planted and then as you water it washes more nutrients into the soil from the top
Live soil is the best thing you can do to grow I haven't bought soil in over 5 years just make my own with my worm farm and my aqua garden that's aquaponics take the used fish water to mix in with the worm compost best soil you can use
Live soil can also be extremely costly when starting out and not everyone has or wants to put that much money into it. It takes time to get it right and keep it going for your garden, don't assume what was easy and quick for you works so well for others. That's called arrogance and it's an ugly look on everyone.

depends on if the fertilizer is water soluble. Feather meal isn't water soluble for example and would be better buried to allow the microbes to break it down easier.
Make your own. If you have chickens keep the egg shells, bake them in the oven, crush them up till they turn to powder, add a little bit of water and vinegar and pour directly to bottom of plant
Yess. you can make at least 10 same much bags with half a price happy frog bag and if he has own compost then he needs buy only peat moss and perlite :D i can't watch videos anymore who just wasting their money and says they are over 10 years doing gardening xd

Jacque, would filling a 20 Gal trash can with potting mix then adding appropriate amounts of worm castings, compost (bagged) and chicken manure be overkill or make for a good mix for container veg and flowers? I'd like to get the most fertile mix I can get all in one container.
I hate that $20.00 + per bag soils are touted as the way. You'd have about $20.00 into it for some broccoli-shame! I grow exceptional plants with my own soil. Compost, peat moss, native top soil, leaf mold and some organic granular are plenty. Add to that the JMS microbes, compost and earthworm teas and stand back. It's not as if "Happy Frog" pricey dirt is magic, it's just a decent soil blend you can do yourself for way less. Old time farmers would be so pissed!
I usually add about half the containers worth of soil to the bottom and the top half containers worth I mix the fertilizer into. Always works super well 😊

What if you’re using a self irrigating pot or bed, bringing water from below? Here, the water is so hard, after a couple weeks watering from above I got a nice mineral crust! I’m going to try your method, crust be darned! Keep up the good work😊
@@cececox6399 I don't seem to be suffering any ill effects from it but it's hard on hot water heaters. Lyme accumulates inside the tank and burns out the heating element. It also makes weird ice cubes. I think the rain water idea is a good one. Reverse osmosis filter systems are expensive.

You should not need any fertilizer for 2 to 3 months using that Happy frog, and I would add a little bit more perlite to the mix too. Happy roots, happy shoots.

hmmm..interesting..Ill try this..I put soil then vermicompost then food scraps then compost. I never use store bought soil..i garden in containers with worms which are fed weekly with a food scrap slurry

Be carefull with seedlings or young plants if you are using FF/ Ocean Forest. Allegedly it's hotter than it used to be by them adding a synthetic soluble fert. People have had some of their stuff struggling. Happy Frog is the best one they have. Low safe and slow wins the tasty food.

Some potting mixes have compost in them already, but adding more pure compost ( like aged manure or leaf mould ) usually aids in the health and growth of the plant long-term.
I don’t have at home compost started or a local nursery, where can I get compost from? I’ve heard mixed things about different manures going straight on, mulch, etc
Manures shouldn't be placed directly on growing plants but you can mix it in and let it breakdown over a period of months. Mulch is great to add to the surface of your soils and then it will breakdown into organic matter over time feeding your soil. I would go with an organic granular fertilizer if you aren't getting the growth you want until you can source some compost!

Disagree, if you mix the fertilizer into the soil and not just the surface it'll encourage your roots to grow deeper and wider to find it.

You don't even want to add any fertilizer until about 4 weeks when you start with as small of a rooted cutting as he did.
All it'll do is provide nutrients that aren't needed while killing beneficial bacteria and fungi

If the fertilizer has a higher density, it will likely drown or fall deeper into the soil, and mixing it with the soil may just speed up the process.

That fertilizer takes 2 to 3 months to break down in order to be available to the plant.. It is not water-soluble
Be sure to run that fertilizer into the top 1-2 inches of soil or it could be watered down and out the sides of grow bags!

It depends if you make your own mix I don't use bags anymore you always get less soil for more in a pre mix but they already have amendments in them
