  • Hi folks, here's the second one in the Left Hand Finger Action series! In it I'm showing the importance of training the upward motion of the fingers of the left hand, into a crisp and light movement. Enjoy!

    This is one of the best lessons on the left-hand technique I have seen. Very useful, 5 min deliberate practice of this per day will save you months or even years. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

    Very helpful, Max. Now I can see where I was moving my wrist back in addition to lifting my fingers which was causing me to under-utilize the knuckle.

    I have a problem, my third finger don't hit the string together With the second finger when its necessary (automatcally hits a little ahead) or when I play the second finger together with the first, the fourth do not hit the correct point and if I try play faster passages I am not able to play in tune. How could I fix that? (I dont know if its a hand positioning problem or Just having to practice doing things right)

    Thank you so much for this video, i still got a question. Im not professional player but player from heart and since i can think my pinky das a weird movement as if the joint cant move cant move in a smooth way. This lead me to a very strange hand movement when i want to use my pinky. Even if i putt all pingers on their place at the same time and try to relax my hand there is tention in my pinky. Had alot of teachers and started from zero with basic tecniques but as soon as it comes to the pinky im lost. Any ideas what could help me?

      Hi Violina, I remember I had the same problem, like a sort of click in the action of my pinky. I just excercised it quite a bit with finger exercises and the wonkiness went away. But I would say it's important to learn to relax the hand totally in a resting position-- if you're doing finger exercises already on tension it'll probably just build more tension. Try doing other things like, make a tight fist (no need to hold for more than a second or two and then relax the hand completely, as a way to release tension.

    Hi Max!
    Thank you for doing these very helpful videos! I have a question: After practicing a while on the left hand finger action, lifting the fingers and keeping a good relaxed hand while maintaining frame I noticed improvements after a month or so, but when I try it with a low 2:nd finger (minor scale) I lose my frame and I become tense i my hand, I feel like I have to rotate my hand on the vertical axis to get space between the low 2:nd and the 3:rd finger and then I'm to far away with my pinky so it becomes strainious to reach. Do you have any tips for this problem?

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi I'm not sure why this is happening. Are your fingers unusually different lengths? It sounds like maybe you need to improve the flexibility of the left hand. Try practising finger patterns just using different combinations of 3 fingers rather than four. This will allow you to learn something about where the tension is coming from. Or if that's still bringing tension, try two. Try also building the frame of the fingers from 4th down to 1 rather than the other way around. Practise finger patterns where each finger is on a different string. Try flexibility exercises as a warmup-- place the 4th on the string in 3rd position, and slide the rest of the fingers backwards along the fingerboard. Then put your first on the string and slide the rest of the fingers upwards. Then try sliding 1st and 4th along the string in different directions, spreading the fingers along the fingerboard. (all without bow!)

    Hey, I was wondering about the points of contact of the left hand. Menhuin only touches the violin with his thumb and playing fingers, however, other people believe in touching the violin with the thumb and the base of the first finger. Should there be a space between fingers and the fingerboard? I would love your opinion Max!

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Thomas, thanks for your question. Yes people's technique differs here and I'm not sure there is a 'should' this way or that. It may come down to the natural position the hand takes when it is lifted to the fiddle -- I feel like in order to create space between the side of my hand and the neck I have to do so artificially, so my basic position is WITH contact. (Light contact, but contact nonetheless.) If you look at modern soloist Augustin Hadelich it looks like he maintains space between the hand and the instrument always. To me it looks a little uncomfortable, like there is a tactile element missing...but you can't fault it-- the guy has a razor technique! People's fingers angle in different ways too and this can be a factor-- sometimes the fingers angle more naturally up the fingerboard and in the same direction, and sometimes at a greater angle. I think the short answer is find out what works best for you-- does creating a little space between the base of the first finger and the neck feel natural, and does it give you greater mobility? If you've no reason to think that contact holds you back, then don't let it concern you. Also remember that even a technique that has closer contact there will vary-- as soon as you go into higer positions the hand naturally lifts away from the neck. All good technique has fluidity. Hope that helps!

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Norberto, practise flexibility exercises: when in playing position slide the first finger down the fingerboard, (no bow needed for this) and then the fourth finger up the fingerboard, then eventually do them both at the same time. Do this without pushing out the wrist (v important) ideally keep the wrist bent slightly inwards. Doing this exercise will gradually improve flexibility and reach of the hand. Please subscribe-- I will make a video with this exercise.

    sir, how i can know thats im using base knuckle 100%? cuz some time I cannot distinguish

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the finger doesn't change shape when it lifts up then you're doing it right. But not because you're holding it stiff, just because you're only activating the movement from the base knuckle

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4th finger should be rounded when it's on the fingerboard. If it's straight or almost straight, you're either pressing too hard or the finger is a bit weak-- you can strengthen it with exercise.

    • @infinitepawer
      @infinitepawer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxbailliemusic But what showing in this video at 0:58 or 1:50 don't look that curve to me .. by the way i have a very short pinky compare to my other finger so if i wanna keep it curve while using it then i have to keep moving my hand forth & back from the neck .. too close my 1st 2nd 3rd become too curve , too far my 4th become something exactly like the video here. Still figuring what the best for me after 2 years trying.

    • @maxbailliemusic
      @maxbailliemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@infinitepawer Hi yes my fourth finger isn't very curved on the demo, but its shape is natural for my hand position. Everyone's hand will be different-- Ideally the hand position can stay stable whichever finger you are using but if you have a particularly short 4th then you might need to do a bit of adjustment while you play. Main thing is to find a position that allows the fingers to move well, individually and independently, and one that allows you to stay relaxed. Avoid 'pushing' your hand into a certain shape or position, that will create tension.
