    Well done Dan and Steve. Not many farriers would have trimmed feet in those muddy conditions. X

    They can be very dangerous. A woman near me was leading a horse to pasture when it reared up and hit her in the head and she died. Just walking to the pasture.

    It is great to see Willow doing so much better! I learn so much from every video. Is Tanya up for using a more professional camera and mike, someone suggested a go pro (which could ease Tanya’s job of videoing tremendously) and a fluffy wind blocking thing on the mikes, one also clipped to Steve.
    In some videos, maybe more recent than this, Tanya keep her camera on portrait orientation, and that helped keep you a d the horse in view much more easily. There is so much precious learning you two put together in these videos that it would be awesome to see the landscape be default and the mikes blocking out the wind so we don’t miss anything.
    We appreciate your work so much! I am sure many of us viewers would be up for pitching in a little money towards the purchase of a go pro and good filtering mike or two. Let us know what your thoughts are please about this.

    Speaking of weather, I am in Littleton, CO and I watched Louisville burn. Winds reached 109 mph. The wind spread the fire and it lit the rooves of houses like candles on a cake. About 1000 houses burned to the ground because it is so dry here. We don't get any type of precipitation for 6 months at a time.

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be good to build the houses with Adobe or rammed Earth, Straw bale with a good layer of a mud clay plaster, or Hemp crete… These materials are built thick and don’t easily burn.

    Currently doing a masters in animal behaviour and this is everything. Watched the Buck movie last night and it was so magical. My focus is in canine psychology but I have a deep love of horses having ridden for 15 years. Ive found though that there are so many crossovers here between canine and horse despite the predator/prey differences. Its definitely something I'm goingbto look further into and perhaps trial run a couple of methods. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but how fun to study. Thanks Steve and Tanya for giving me something new to explore.

    You handled that negativity with such grace, the same sensitivity that you use with the horses. I would hazard a guess that Charlotte handled the messages the same way.
    I have a little note stuck somewhere that I'm not looking at it every day, so I don't tune out to it. I just come across it randomly. It's a powerful thing for me to remember.

    I really love your videos and I’m not a horseman (although I always wanted to be). I’d love to offer a suggestion in your videos. Sometimes the viewer can’t hear what you and the owner are saying. There are clip on microphones for everyone involved in the training so everything can be heard. Just a loving suggestion. God bless. Susan from Texas

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, the videos are so helpful d would be even more so with a muffle for the mikes against wind, holding the camera in portrait, and someone suggested a go pro which Tanya could then wear on her head or shoulder instead of having to hold the phone in her hand all the time.
      Steve and Tanya’s team work with horses is precious and worth the better equipment if Tanya is up for learning how to use it! I bet a lot of us would chip on to help them buy good video equipment.

    Got the farrier coming for a trim tomorrow and after watching several of your videos, I went out and bought a couple of licks yesterday. I wanted the small ones but the shop I went to didn't have much by way of choice. Got my Merlin a 'narner' flavoured one. He *loves* narners. Hopefully it'll take his mind off what's going on. Not that he gets *really* upset or kicks or bites but I want him to stand nice and still and pull the poor chap about.

    With respect to the first mare ... sometimes it's just a 'word' (but with horse you show or demonstrate the word) is all they need, in order to feel safe. The mare no longer felt threatened resulting from your first visit ... and it seems to have transferred to other situations.

    I always had success by taking a lead rope around the front fetlocks and pull one leg at a time till the horse moved forward. Keep pulling one leg, then the other till they are stretched out and uncomfortable. The horse will then step forward to get comfortable again. Then resume pulling one leg at a time till the horse needs to take the back feet up again for comfort. I’ve never known that method to fail except if the horse has never been roped around the legs. There was a time when that one important step in a horse’s education was neglected, but it’s important to teach a horse never to fight when it’s legs are constrained in case they get caught up in wire .
    The latest method appears to be to tap with a stick on the rump till they step forward to get out of the way of the discomfort of the stick, but I can see someone getting hurt if the horse takes a huge leap forward, trampling the handler

    • @louisegogel7973
      @louisegogel7973 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve taps on the side of the horse exactly where leg and foot pressure would be used by a rider to guide the horse. This seems really intelligent to me because you are gently training the horse from any young age towards being a riding horse!

      I looked it up, it’s actually called a CLEG FLY. Wildlife trust has this to say for them:
      “The Notch-horned cleg-fly is a common species of horse fly that lives in long grassland and damp woodland habitats. The females have sharp, biting mouthparts and usually feed on the blood of large mammals, such as cows and horses. The males lack these mouthparts, so feed on nectar. Females wait in shady areas for their prey to pass-by, locating it by sight with their large, compound eyes. The eggs are laid on stones and plants, or in mud, close to water. When the larvae hatch, they fall on to the damp earth where they predate other invertebrates.”
