  • Following the death of Robert Byrne, an IRA Volunteer and trade unionist, in a shootout in Limerick in April 1919, the British army imposed martial law on the city. The Limerick Trades Council responded by organising a general strike against the British military. They took over all shops and businesses and began printing their own money, and the strike became referred to as the Limerick Soviet. From the programme "Urban Tales".

    They say that Limerick is dangerous, they lie, it is a great place with fantastic people and a great history. One of my favourite places in Ireland.
    I found Dublin and Cork far more dangerous than Limerick.

    Had Ireland become a Soviet Republic, it could've sent a severe wave of unrest throughout the British Empire and led to the liberation of millions from British imperialism.

      Capitalism has been around for over 2500 years first dating back to ancient Greece. There has not been that one country in the world with a socialist based economy succeed the utopia they Dream of. What about the free market as simple Ham beef sandwich will cost over 16000 US dollars to make.

      Living Lifeform my part time job is a historian. You really are a typical radical ignorant communist. It's unlike capitalism was founded the day since America got its independence from the British Empire. There are other countries other than the United States if you haven't knowing about that.
      It was the communist parties in Germany and Italy around in the 1920s that used violence for their own political advantage. terrorizing citizens and striking fear in small business owners. This led to the rise of Mussolini with the ideology of socialist nationalist to take control over capitalist Italy. It was a radical communists that chased the Citizens right into Mussolinies arms. Hitler loved Mussolinies ideas and copied him. Before Adolf Hitler Rose to power Germany was in ruins after WWI ( which they did not start ). The French made them pay back billions for the damages limited their military to only 100 thousand troops maximum, 4 small Navy ships and weren't allowed any submarines. As well they have taking the Rhineland off Germany. The Rhinelands was filled with Rich iron ore and other valuable metals. People in Germany were beginning to starve with hunger and there was a hyperinflation with their currency. Over 13% are the German population identify themselves as a communist. Again terrifying German citizens when Hitler rose to power he began a war with the Communist parties overthrowing democracy Germany and leading the fascist party of Germany time in Germany into the Power House it once was before the war. ending hunger and unemployment.
      Has history always tends to repeat itself the very same thing is already happening in America, Britain, France and other countries around the world are where communists are harassing citizens and calling them Nazis for disagreeing with their political views. Suddenly you see a rise of Nazis (socialist nationalist) pretty much everywhere wherever communist are violent and radical as usual.
      One of the leaders of the Nazi party said we couldn't ask for a better enemy then the alt left as they bully Conservatives and libertarians to run into our arms and every day we grow larger because of the communists.
      Personally I disagree with both the alt right and alt left as they are nothing but racial collectivists and as a conservative I believe in individuality even the Nazi party said they do not believe in Petty conservative ideology of individuality and freedom.
      Everyday libertarians and Conservatives join the Nazi party because of you're destructive communist behaviour.
      Every action has an opposite equal reaction.

    This event bears more resemblance to the libertarian anarchism prevalent in Spain during the civil war, rather than the Russian revolution which was really a coup d'etat led by the authoritarian Bolshevik Party.
    The workers don't need to be led and controlled by a party. The emancipation of the working-class must be carried out by the working-class themselves!

    • @thegreanvillepost8156
      @thegreanvillepost8156 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nonsense. Read what the anarchists-idealists, no doubt-ended up doing to the Spanish Republic-and you;ll see you need a tough, well discilined and intelligent vanguard party to overcome a well entrenched and supplied enemy. The endless indiscipline and dslocations of the anarchists consumed a greast dela of time and resource sof teh Spanish Republic, not to mention that many of its leader were leftwing bourgeois, and not really revolutionists.

    I know the term may have eventually been corrupted by the USSR, but as I recall soviets are meant to refer to workplaces etc. (in this case a city) under democratic workers' control.

    Not really. The Anarchists in Spain were tied to the class collaborationist Popular Front, which in the end spelled doom for the potential Spanish Revolution. The Limerick Soviet, note the name, was the last chance for Ireland to have been a United Socialist Republic with a revolutionary Bolshevik Party, like the Russians. Hardly a coup d'etat.
