Great video, John. I actually quite enjoyed The Card Player, my top Argento is Tenebre, then Deep Red (the first Argento I ever watched back in the days of VHS), then probably Cat O’ Nine Tails. The Phenomena set is fantastic, especially as the soundtrack wasn’t mentioned in the pre-order blurb. Must get Opera sometime as you’ve rated it so highly. Look forward to your next video.
Cheers for watching Mark 👍👍 ill be rewatching his later movies, so I might have a better view of The Card Player on a rewatch 🤔😁 yeah can't go wrong with the films you mentioned 🤩🤩 I know it's crazy what ended up in the Phenomena set as I wasn't expecting it to be as good, if a 4k comes out it might not be as expansive 🤔 The UK Opera is a great edition Mark, well worth checking out mate 🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍

Nice collection and interesting thoughts. Very few film makers can boast a career where the quality does not dip at some point (Kubrick perhaps?) so it isnt suprising that Argento made a few duds. But when you consider how many great films he made he deserves to be held in very high esteem. In the latter part of his career nepotism seemed to be a factor in that he cast his daughter in Stendahl, Phantom, Mother & Dracula. I'm not saying she is a bad actor, shes great in Stendahl but maybe Dario wasn't making every decision in the best interests of his films at that point. Indeed his soon to be released 'Black Glasses' also stars Asia - I don't know if you have heard too much about this movie but it sounds very giallo and quite similar to cat o nine tails. I think Hitchcock is the only one of his movies I havent seen and am in no rush to see it to be honest. So hard to choose a favourite so I'll go with 3 equal, Tenebrae, Bird with Crystal and Deep Red. And yes, you are right about Sleepless, Arrow released it sometime around 2013 on white box dvd and they also included it in the Neo Giallo boxset around the same time. Some of their early white box dvds seem to be picking up in price these days.
I agree with Asia Argento sort of taking over his movies and it maybe not for the best although I do think she is a good actress as well 🤩 you're right about Kubrick being solid all the way through his career and not many can do that 👌 so Black Glasses is a new movie from him? I was unaware of that one!! 🤔🤔 hope he can bring back some of his magic 🤞🤞yeah I remember thst rekesee now of Sleepless and the old white box dvds are starting to get a bit pricey, for what they are 🤯 cheers for this great comment mate 🤩🤩👍👍

Somebody might have beaten me to it here in the comments but yesterday Shudder picked up Dario’s new movie ‘Dark Glasses’. It’s got a cinema release in Italy on 24th February I believe. Not sure when Shudder are streaming it over here. The trailer looks cool though. Great to have him directing again.
Didn't know that mate 🤔😲👍 I really hope he makes a decent movie this time around 🤞🤞🤞 been ages since I've been wowed by Argento 🤯 thanks for this great info 🤩🤩👍👍
Brilliant video John, really need to get into Argento films, I have Bird with the Crystal Plumage to watch and hopefully will pick up a few more in the next Arrow sale. Hope you're doing well mate 👍

Great video mate! Still haven't seen all of Argento's movies, but love/like the ones I have. The Stendhal Syndrome is a great thriller and the re-release by Grindhouse Releasing is well worth getting. Deep Red was my first experience with Argento and also my first experience with the Giallo genre in general and also Italian horror. The remake of Suspiria is great, because it doesn't try to be like the original (think of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 compared to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre). The remake adds things the original didn't, without being disrespectful to it. Give it a fair chance, you might actually enjoy it as fan of the original, like me :).
Still hope he has at least one more great film left in him! I’ve never seen Five Days but have the rest, I do struggle to like Phantom, Hitchcock, Dracula and sometimes Mother Of Tears. Dario’s films from Deep Red to Opera are my must haves, plus Sleepless, Trauma, Stendhal and even The Card Player (a guilty pleasure lol). Pelts & Jennifer are worth getting on a stand alone release. I’d love to see Tenebre, Inferno, Opera, Sleepless & Four Flies upgraded to Ultra 4K, the audio on the current UK Opera Blu-ray is poor, Anchor B had a better DVD set years ago. Trauma is being released by Vinegar S with 2 theatrical cuts of the film plus an extended working video print, it looks worth the plunge so far.
Great video as always John... my top 3 Argento films would be 3, Deep Red 2, Suspiria and number 1, my all time favourite Four flies on grey velvet. As you said the shameless bluray is ok but would love a 4k release. The climax to four flies is for me a masterpiece and the music by Morricone is amazing. 😀
Thanks Richard 👌👌 great choices, I need to rewatch four flies soon as I've watched the first 2 in the "trilogy" yeah its begging for a 4k or at least a remastered blu ray special edition 🤞🤞🤞 the ending is great and anything that Morticone is involved with is exceptional 🤩🤩👍👍
Hi John, interesting cheers, has your thing 4 k box set come yet ? Gotta say uts impressive, don't know if your a bond fan but the Daniel Craig 4ks are half price at hmv at min ?
Hi Milrman, im only going for a standard version of The Thing on 4K as my Arrow special edition has all the bells and whistles on 👍👍im a fan of Daniel Craigs Bond so that's a great heads up as I only have Casino Royale on 4k at the moment 🤩 cheers for the info mate 🤩🤩👍👍
great collection!! you know whats funny is that the first time i saw deep red, it was the long cut of the movie, and i didnt like it enough to buy it on blue ray so i got the dvd of it, which is the shorter cut... i rewatched it the other day and liked it way better and i couldnt figure out why until you just mentioned the 2 different cuts... i looked it up and sure enough the version i had was the shorter version hahaha
Cheers for the great comment, yeah with Arrow releasing only the longer cut on regular blu ray, I think most people don't know about the shorter cut and thus is one of the rare times I recommend the shorter version 🤔 I think your right, the longer cut drags a bit and the shorter cut plays a lot better for me too 😊😊👍👍 I'm doing a follow up to this video soon and I'll probably talk about how many folks are saying the same thing about the shorter cut 👌 cheers mate 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies yeah I was a lot more entertained by it this time, now I know why lol. The edition I have is the blue underground dvd that says “English uncensored version”. I think it’s an hour and 45 minutes
That's the one bud!! 8 had that version as well, great version really enjoyed it, sold it when I got my Arrow special edition blu ray used to have it on uk dvd as well, really happy to get this 4k and I finally feel that's my lot 😁👍👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies i always heard mother of tears was really bad too, but I loved it. I thought it was a really fun movie. It’s free on tubi right now if you care to see it. I tried watching Dracula 3d tonight and that one was pretty bad haha, I had to turn it off. I heard he is set to direct a new movie called black glasses!
I think I watched Mother of Tears yonks ago, but have no memory of it..... which doesn't bode well 🥴🤣 I don't have Tubi unfortunately, but I'm willing to give all his later movies a watch, I haven't heard anybody say anything good about Dracula 3D 😳😳🥴 yeah Black Glasses...... hopefully it'll be a return to form somewhat! If I was a great director like Argento, and at his age, I would try and make one last great movie! I kind of feel Clint Eastwood does that, treat every movie like it was his last 🤩🤩👌👌
Hey John. Great video mate !. I'm a huge Argento fan :). It's SOOO hard to choose a favorite :(. I even like some of his movies from the 90's. Have you mailed me the details already for where to send your gift ??. Cheers mate !
Hi Undead 🤩 I'm going to rewatch his later movies to see if I rate them better than I remember them 🤔 I can understand anyone having a hard time picking out favourites of his classic movies 👍 yeah ive sent a mail to you mate and thanks again 🤩🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Hey mate. I think something went wrong because i didn't get the e-mail somehow :(. Could you send it to me once more, please ??. My e-mail adres should be correct.
Hi John, for me Suspiria and Inferno are the ones that are my favourite because they came out on vhs in the early 80's👍. Opera is really good and looks stunning but it has its flaws. Deep Red is brilliant and has some comedy moments as well. Tenebre another classic👍👍. All the best and stay away from Dracula 3D😂😂.
Yeah Gary, you can't go wrong with those titles you have mentioned 👌👌 yeah there is some comedy in the car ride and the seat!!! 🤣🤣 yeah ove honestly never heard a good word about Dracula 3D 😱😱 cheers Gary 🤩🤩👍👍
Yeah Paul just been told that on a comment, great news!!! Its funny when you mention a movie that feels like it's totally been forgotten about and next minute it's getting a new version!! 😳🤣🤣 cheers Paul 🤩🤩👍👍
Hi John. Trauma has just been announced for release by Vinegar Syndrome later in the year. 👍 Tenebrae is my favorite Argento but you can pretty much move around your Top 10 as they are all great. Mother of Tears was a letdown for the trilogy but from memory I don’t remember hating it 🤔 look forward to your Fulci list soon. Bava, Fulci, Argento - Titans of Italian Genre Cinema 👍
Yeah Wolf im hearing that now, it sounds like its gonna be a good release mate 🤩🤩 a lot of people are mentioning Tenebrae as their favourite 👍 yeah the Top Ten of Argento us about as solid as they go 👌👌👌 I need to see the few I haven't seen 🤔 looking forward to making the Fulci video and yeah Bava as well 🤩🤩🤩🤩 good call for that mate 👌👌👌👌
1. Profondo Rosso 2. Suspiria 3. Tenebrae 4. Four flies on grey velvet (The poignant ending is fabulous) 5. Opera 6. Phenomena 7. The bird with the crystal plumage (pacing a problem) 8. Cat o nine tails..(didn't resonate) The rest are not for me.
Cheers for your top 10 Simon, can't argue with the list and yeah not all of Argento's movies do work for me either 🤔 but when you look at a top 10 like this you know you are dealing with a master film maker 👌👌👌 cheers Simon 🤩🤩👍👍
I'm a big fan and collector of the older Argento Catalogue. Absolutely amazing work by Arrow and still have my Anchor Bay dvds. Definetely agree with Opera being his strongest most recent piece. I also personally like Nonhosonno or "Sleepless" as his return to the Giallo style and soundtrack by Goblin.
Classic Argento is basically untouchable for me 🤩🤩👌👌 I remember the Anchor Bay dvds 😊👍 Opera was probably his last great movie, yeah Sleepless was a good entry from him Thomas!! 👍 I have my Fulci collection video coming out this evening 👌👌 cheers mate 🤩
Interesting that was your number #1. :) One interesting thing I found out. I was hunting that release down when they did a sort of Re Release in the US. Same we thought. A couple differences. I guess the UK version is a thinner cardboard slip box, instead of the hardbox we have come to love. So the US one they did do a nice hardbox. And I thought great. We got the better version. But then I found out our US version did not come with the CD. That great soundtrack. Nope. So that is what makes that UK version so desirable. It ca me with the CD Soundtrack.
I never knew this about the US release mg 🤔😲 yeah the box wasn't the usual hard box but a thinner card stock that is easily damaged (mine is good thank goodness) that wasn't great to not have the soundtrack in!! Thats one of the best features with this set, I wonder if the new 4K special of Deep Red has the cd in?? 🤔 hope so 🤞🤞 cheers again mate 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies yea, I thought about getting the UK one for that CD but would essentially be paying $100+ for the cd. So yea, not worth it. Maybe a used, really beat up one, if cheap might be worth it, and could add to the US one, for the Ultimate Edition. :)
@@mg-ThisHandleIsSoStupid it's funny when certain editions have a certain really desirable item in it! I remember buying this set on pre order from the Arrow site and when it sold out and started going for crazy money, that was the first time I realised that if you want something get it as soon as you can or else you will be at the mercy of the scalpers but hopefully with this new one coming out on 4k it might bring down the price of the blu ray special 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤩🤩
I pretty much like all his films, if I had to pick a worst it would be Gaillo. The killers Bo Selecta Rambo look is hilarious. Mother of tears is pretty gory and reminded me a bit of 80s horror so that ticks a box for me but the final scene really didn't make a lot of sense. I do like Dracula in a hammer horror style way, the giant mantis does need to be seen.lol You never mentioned his episode of Masters of Horror, Jennifer. I liked that one, Pelts was OK too.
🤣🤣 I know it's such an odd look Stephen 🥴🥴 I need to see the Masters of Horror short films again I barely remember them now, but remember liking them back in the day 👍I will probably check out the later Argento movies one day but the availability of them is not great and I've heard mention of the Mantis scene! I've gotta check that out 🤔👌 cheers Stephen 🤩🤩👍👍
I agree Opera was the last great one. I think there was a bit of a return to form with Sleepless. The odd one is The Card Player it felt very much like a made for TV movie with a low budget, I don't remember it being very gory and it felt like it was heavily cut, it could have been so much better. Giallo is awful, and I think calling the film that was a cynical marketing ploy
@@MondoChelloveckMovies I remember watching that on "video" shortly after it was released - as I did with Terror at the Opera (as it was released cut in the UK) and Creepers (before finally watching Phenomena. I would have preferred a single whole movie rather than 2 shorter ones. Amazon have Mother of Tears for a fiver - I didn't think it was as bad as everyone says - very bloody and violent
Cheers for the heads up with Mother of Tears Paul, never seen it but might give it a try 🤔👍👍watching Argento movies back in the day wasn't the easiest thing to do, cuts to movies and different versions of the movies! Actually his later ones are the harder to find now (which might not be a bad thing 🤣) it's great though that now we have the definitive versions to watch and own 🤩🤩👍👍
Hi mate have you seen his episode of MASTERS OF HORROR called JENIFER? i have it on region 1 dvd with art cards and slipcase , it is bonkers and very gory
Hi Jason, I think I did a long time ago, I used to like the Masters of Horror series of episodes 👍and remember seeing a few, but haven't owned any for a long time 😁😁👍👍
Wow Rohan 🤯 good analogy of it, it makes you wonder how someone who we all know can make AMAZING movies make something so bad.....its his lowest ranked movie on imdb 😳 cheers for commenting 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies There's only one good scene ( except the loads of nudity) in this 110 minutes film. That scene consists of a gigantic mantis killing a person. If you want to see that, search the clip in TH-cam and watch it. But, don't watch the film.
@@MondoChelloveckMovies No, I stopped at ' Inferno ' . I don't want to change my perception of Dario Argento. I watched ' Dracula 3D ' just to see how ridiculously bad it is.
Haha I can understand that as well mate 🤣🤣🤣 yeah I think Giallo really put me off his movies after say Sleepless... I think Fulci suffered the sane after say Manhattan Baby (like the film, hate the title) 🥴🥴🥴👍👍
There is a part of me that feels it is just a cash grab with Arrow and these 4Ks. I won't be upgrading any of them. The art alone on the new ones would keep from getting. Same with Donnie Darko. If people really want the 4K, get the standard, or just the disc at the cheapest to put with your other box set. Also a bit bummed that they jumped on these 4Ks, when those releases already had great limited edition box sets, but Tenebrae and Inferno don't.
Yeah mg, I'm getting that feeling as well and I don't blame anyone for not wanting to get the 4k versions of these new releases, it does come down to new art and only a 4K disc that's different, im only doing it for Brd, Cat and Deep Red although as you say Tenebrae and Inferno should have been the first ones to be updated 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Yup, and we don't even know if they are in the works.? I love that copy of Opera you have. I will leave a link in case you want to look into. It is sold out but just to see the release info. I wish also we would get a nicer version of "Four Flies". I am going to have to re visit Deep Red.
I just purchased the 4k of Deep Red it will be my first Watch
Wow! You are in for a real treat 🤩🤩 I always think to go for the shorter cut as it plays better in my opinion 🤔🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies thanks for the tip
Back in the day, the Dario Argento brand was like the Alfred Hitchcock brand.
Yeah Jnana I agree that Argento was like the Italian Hitchcock 🤩🤩👍👍
Did you lock in your preroder for.. Tenebrae 4K? I'm getting Arrow's Orginale! We need ..OPERA.. and... FOUR FLIES..next.
Yeah straight away Ken 🤩🤩👌👌 yeah we do and of course Inferno 🤞🤞😀cheers Ken 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies
Hey mate.
Hey mondo have you heard VS just announced trauma in the December drops??
Yeah Paul just been told that on a comment, great news!!! Its funny when you mention a movie that feels like it's totally been forgotten about and next minute it's getting a new version!! 😳🤣🤣 cheers Paul 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies ye they must of being watching you video mate 😉 alls we beed now is 4 flies 🙏
Great video, very informative.👍
Cheers Darko, appreciate you watching mate 😊😊👍👍
You gonna show lucio fulci movies you got also? 😊
Yeah definitely doing the same sort of video with my Fulci movies Prodigy 1988 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Great looking forward too see it 😊
Cheers mate, hopefully in the next 2 weeks it'll be out mate 🤩🤩👍👍
1. Profondo Rosso
2. Suspiria
3. Tenebrae
4. Four flies on grey velvet (The poignant ending is fabulous)
5. Opera
6. Phenomena
7. The bird with the crystal plumage (pacing a problem)
8. Cat o nine tails..(didn't resonate)
The rest are not for me.
@@MondoChelloveckMovies amazing. I love the Fulci 4K releases that Blue Underground put out. Phenomenal restorations from a boutique label
Yeah they look absolutely incredible Thomas!! The best restorations by a boutique label in my estimation 🤔🤩🤩👍👍
Interesting that was your number #1. :)
One interesting thing I found out.
Now we will have great 4k relase of four flies on grey velvet thanks to severin
So looking forward to seeing this as the Shameless version is quite poor unfortunately 😵💫 really glad this is getting the release it deserves 😁😁👍👍
It's a shame that Argento lost his spark 😔 Sleepless was a pretty good effort 👍 I enjoyed Two Evil Eyes quite a lot as well Paul 🤩🤩👍👍
Hi Jason, I think I did a long time ago, I used to like the Masters of Horror series of episodes 👍and remember seeing a few, but haven't owned any for a long time 😁😁👍👍
yeah, it'd be too easy to pick his best film if you included writing credits because Once Upon A Time In The West is a masterpiece.
😊😊 Great point there Gav!! Its such a great movie!! The first 30 mins is like a mini movie in itself 🤔🤩🤩 cheers for watching mate 😁😁👍👍
' Dracula 3D ' is an absolutely bottom of the barrel bad. One would try his best to unsee the whole thing after it gets over.
🤣🤣 I'll do that Rohan, I almost want to watch the movie now to see how bad it is 😲😲🤯🤯😁 have you seen 2009's Giallo? What a mess 🥴🥴🥴👍👍
I picked up the Ronin Flix set that came out maybe a year ago, and was supposed to be a deluxe limited edition. I guess being used to Arrow's quality, I was a little disappointed by it, as far as art, packaging, etc. but picture is great. Look into that edition. I will leave a link in case you want to look into. It is sold out but just to see the release info.
I wish also we would get a nicer version of "Four Flies".
I am going to have to re visit Deep Red. I can't remember what version II watched, but did not think much of it, and maybe I need to watch the shorter version. I think what I watched was a Directors Cut?
Here the link: roninflix.com/products/opera-3-disc-set?_pos=2&_psq=opera&_ss=e&_v=1.0
@@mg-ThisHandleIsSoStupid cheers for this info 🤩🤩 Arrow did release Opera on white case DVD and I always thought it would make the jump to blu ray by them but it didn't happen 🥴 the cult films release I have is really nice!! I like their presentations, they also put out Suspiria on blu ray and it looked pretty decent (obviously not a patch on the Synapse 4K) yeah no heads up on Tenebrae or Inferno 🤯 Four Flies would be great on a special edition 🤞👍 I had watched the shorter version of Deep Red a good few times before watching the longer cut..... I was really excited to see the full version but thought the extra scenes did nothing for the movie strangely enough 🥴 try it if you can mg 👍👍 I'll check that link out cheers again 🤩🤩👍👍
I agree that Opera is stunning looking movie but thats it for me. I think the story is thin and the acting is so bad, but thats just my opinion :-)
Hi Niels, I kind of know what you mean about some of the acting can be hammy at times 🥴🥴😳 🤩👍👍👍
Great news viniger syndrome is releasing trauma in November
Wow Michal 👏 great news mate, thanks for the heads up 🤩🤩👍👍
