Make it a mission! Find the deleted scenes from Purple Rain! Ever since the movie Purple Rain came out there has always been talk about the deleted scenes! Yes they do exist! Shortly after Prince passed Albert Magnoli admitted he had 90 unreleased songs that Prince had for the Movie Purple Rain. You can hear him talk about it when they interviewed him for the Purple Rain Celebration at The Academy. He did another interview where he briefly spoke about the deleted scenes. He claimed that the deleted scenes just fell on the cutting room floor and disappeared! However keep in mind that Albert Magnoli did ALL THE EDITING! In my opinion he has them. I’m sure Prince has some too! I’m sure they may be hidden away somewhere in Prince’s vault! Just waiting to be discovered! Rumor has it that Prince never threw away anything! I’m not sure as to why Albert Magnoli would hold on to them. As time goes by they will continue to rise in value! Morris Day did an interview once and mentioned the fact that they had to recast the movie after Prince and Vanity had a falling out! So, scenes do exist of Vanity in the lead role but replaced by Apollonia! I would love to see the scenes with Vanity! Albert Magnoli did mention a scene that was cut out of Jill Jones playing the piano when Prince walked in. He asked her, “do you think this place will be jumping tonight? Jill replies, “well I’ll be here”. Also Albert Magnoli mentioned once the movie was originally just over 2 hours long! For some reason they had to cut it down. The scene when Prince takes Apollonia back to his place for the first time? That scene was shot with 3 different ratings! A “G” rating. A “R” and what they considered a “X” rating at that time! Remember the barn scene with Apollonia and then Prince and Apollonia? It also was much longer! Who could forget Apollonia jumping into the waters of Lake Minnetonka?! Really it was the Minnesota River located in Henderson MN! But she later came out the water in a reservoir in California. The waters in the Minnesota River was much to cold and she had a case of hypothermia. So they relocate filming in California. The original conversation at “Lake Minnetonka” was much longer. I look forward to the day when these deleted scenes see the light of day and released to all the die hard Prince followers like me!
I feel you BUT it depends on WHO has the rights to those deleted scenes. The Estate or WB may have regained ownership of them after Prince's untimely passing. But, like you, I feel Prince has his own copies of them somewhere in one of his vaults. He ALWAYS was infinitely meticulous about keeping copies of EVERYTHING he did. Peace.
Woah, woah. Slow your roll there Kendrix! First of all, I understand why you and many others (myself included) would be excited to see any excised footage. Unfortunately, back then (unless your ip was Star Wars or you were someone with the clout of say, Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott) little - if anything - was retained let alone archived. Is that to say all is lost? Not necessarily. However, what remains is probably Betamax quality at best being a few [very slightly] edits as workprints that the Director, Producers, Prince and his Management team were given for review. Despite Prince recording and retaining a lot of audio and visual material even prior to the creation of The Vault at Paisley Park, any of that original 35mm stock won’t be present there. Any of those raw materials, Negatives and Inter-positives that were struck for international Distribution would reside with Warner Bros. film studios arm. Also worth considering is the fact that as of my time of writing this (June 2024), a 4K BluRay is set to be released in a few weeks to mark the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain. As of yet, I can’t state whether or not this is a *proper* HD remaster, or if they’ve run it thru one of those pieces of God-awful Vi-upscaling software. What I can say with absolute certainty is that there is no new footage, no new bonus materials other than the inclusion of an Audio Commentary by Albert Magnoli for the first time. So the chances of any “deleted footage” seems incredibly slim at best at this point if there isn’t even a hint of such materials appearing on a release to mark the movie’s 40th Anniversary. If (and this is a very big “if”), any extraneous footage survives, it will be in an inevitable state of decay like any other film stock. Without the intervention of specific preservation measures being put in place sooner rather than later, it will eventually gum-up, dry-out, crack and disintegrate. As an example, this almost happened with the original Star Wars trilogy when it was remastered and rereleased in the 90’s - and that stuff was stored in a temperature controlled vault. It was so fragile that they had to scan the entire 3 films frame by frame to strike new negatives to work from - so if you bear in mind that George Lucas had a hell of a time with that, it doesn’t particularly bode well for “Purple Rain” sadly. But like I said earlier, I would imagine there are a small handful of videotapes that may contain work-prints of the movie, but I truly believe that’s the best we can hope for now. Other than that, we’ll just have to wait until 2034 for its 50th anniversary and hope something is found by then. But truth be told, I don’t think anyone’s been actively looking for it because it seems to be widely accepted by those that worked on it that what exists is what we have. Don’t get me started on the whole “Under the Cherry Moon” in color argument. I personally don’t believe that exists any more - but (more importantly) even if it does, I don’t think it should ever see the light of day. Prince had a very specific artistic vision for that film, and I think we should respect that. Anyway, all of this information is posted here both as a fellow Prince fan (since 1983), someone who knew Ken Robinson (who Edited the movie - I was the person he gave the infamous photo of he and Prince on the Warner Bros. backlost during the shoot for the album cover, and who graciously allowed me to share it online with others via The Org - many decades ago now!), and as a former Film Technician myself, so I hope my info. helps clarify a lot of things for you and others in some way. 🕊️ PS: All is not lost however! If you DO want to see some footage that isn’t actually in the released version of the “Purple Rain” movie, go search for the trailer for it on the Warner Bros. YT channel - you’ll see a number of scenes that while they didn’t make it into the released version of the film, did make it into the trailer (the reason for this is they would have still been editing the movie until quite close to release and trailers back then tended to be one only and released several months before a film dropped anyway) but you can see some of Prince getting into a physical fight with The Time, along with the infamous love-making scene in the barn with a purple rainstorm lashing against the barn windows. So that may help scratch that purple itch at least…
