A member of the Navy/Marine Corps that is a member of a unit awarded the PUC has every right to also wear the Navy Cross in ribbon or medals and ribbons - even if the individual action of the award of the Navy Cross occurs in the same operation/action that the unit was awarded the CAR. For instance, the Corpsman awarded the Navy Cross is entitled to wear the ribbon for his Navy Cross and the PUC awarded to the unit assigned (if awarded).

I was just telling my wife that US Veterans can wear their awards during ceremony or Memorial Day events but no one really does it. Wonder why it has not caught on like UK and other countries?

Would it be possible to do a show on post ww2 EOD divers. My father was trained at the U.S. Val powder factory In Indian Head Maryland from March 1952 until 1958. He was a second class diver. His prior service started October 1940 and he served as a gunners mate 1st class during ww2. He started on the DD Myrant in the Atlantic and in 1943 was transferred to the Pacific theater serving on DD519 Daly and then on uss swift am 122. He retired as a GMC but also a master EOD. I'm trying to put together an accurate shadow box. One last question that I can't find any information on is what year did EOD specialist start going to jump school. Thank you for your wonderful program. I filed for my father's DD214 over a year and a half ago and finally received it. I was amazed to find out about him being a hard hat diver 2nd class and his extensive EOD training. He was stationed out of Pearl harbor Hawaii on EOD team 1 in 1956. I never met my father and this has been a very interesting journey trying to piece together his military career.

I was awarded the Navy & Marine Corp. Meritorious unit commendation in 1979 on-board the USS Oliver Hazard Perry FFG-7. I was told this unit award is BOTH a unit award and a individual award (for those with the unit during the performance that earned the unit the award). This award is on my service DD-214 papers. Why are not the individual service members who earned this award issued a bronze star instead of this unit award? I'm unclear about this.

I would go with the bronze star is more of an individual award then one given to 100 people in a unit. Saves paper work I guess 😂

@@sst10 thank you for you're reply. Each sailor also received a letter with this award but mine was displaced somewhere. In the German u-boat Navy of ww2, for a certain amount of tonnage sunk by a u-boat, sometimes every sailor would get the iron cross and the skipper usually the knights cross tobthe iron cross, not individual awards. It may have been based on a point system too.

You earned your Unit Award as a team, It is SQN, Bn. or ship company award as opposed to an individual award but most unit awards have an equivalent individual award to indicated their status.

I have one other question. My father was at the battle of Sariago strait on October 25 1944 on the destroyer dd519 Daly. He was in des ron 24 and the Daly's captain was given the navy cross for the Daly's actions during that batlle. Does the crew get a unit ribbon equivalent to the navy cross or only the captain?

Ok thanks, in the dd214 I recently received there was a letter from the admiral of the 7th fleet awarding a commendation ribbon to my father for maintaining the main battery guns on the uss Daly DD519. It says the award was for exceptional duty in heavy combat in forward areas over a several month period climaxing at the battle of Sariago strait. I know it was a ribbon during the war and I believe they made a medal for commendation after. I do not have any of his ribbons medals or citations so I'm glad I found your channel. It's becoming apparent Im going to have to do alot of research to make an accurate shadow box representing his career. Thank you for this wonderful channel and the quick responses.

Great video, I'm curious as to why the Navy Cross cannot be worn by those who have been awarded a Presidential Unit citation? my Grandpa 1st Marines 5th division was awarded the Navy Presidential Unit citation for Guadalcanal campaign (with additional Bronze Star), he was also awarded the Korean Presidential Unit citation.

basically the difference between a unit award and an individual award. Your grandfather’s unit award is certainly a very nice citation. However, it was for his unit and not an individual award. Therefore, he is not eligible for the Navy Cross
