Roy comes across a bit of an asshole in the film, basically becomes so obsessed with extraterrestrial phenomena he basically leaves his family. Even Spielberg said he regretted the whole “leaves his family in pursuit of aliens” angle.
@@andrewburgemeister6684 Maybe. There was a point when he could have stopped just before this scene, but then he had an epiphany. Once his wife left, and wouldn't talk with him even on the phone, there wasn't much left for him to restore a normal life on Earth. Makes me think of Michael Douglas in _Falling Down:_ once he went too far, there was no going back, and even if he had stopped he still would be out of work and estranged from his wife and kid.
I can’t believe that both Dreyfuss and Teri Garr both played husband and wife 12 years later on let it ride. Somehow I think it’s an unofficial sequel to this film. And that Roy came home to his wife and made amends.
He had the audacity to say she was crazy for not wearing anything. While he’s shoveling dirt, plants, bricks, chicken wire, etc. into his kitchen window.
There's a deleted scene where he's up on the roof and his wife tells his son to tell him to come inside. If you look, you can see the "watchtower" on the roof as she drives away. 3:38
Actually, Roy's breakdown occurred over the mashed potatoes he was trying to mold into Devil's Tower, without really knowing what he was making. Then later he makes the connection thanks to the news story on the TV, and begins this little project. I would say his wife is having the breakdown, as this latest behaviour from her husband is simply too much for her to bear. Hopefully someone finally explained it all to her, but maybe that's another movie? Cheers.

@@รรรl First, the morning after Roy's encounter, Ronnie is shown clipping a newspaper article stating that many people in the area reported seeing a UFO... then destroying the article. A moment later, when Roy says he just wants to know what's going on, she responds, "Nothing is going on!" Ronnie knows that Roy almost certainly saw something a rational person would conclude is a flying saucer; she has made a conscious choice to ignore it. Later on, during the press conference with the military brass, Roy is very close to taking control of the meeting, pointing out a serious problem with the government's cover story, and calling them out for their patronizing behavior... and then he is derailed when an old farmer claims to have seen Bigfoot. Ronnie's reaction? She smirks, clearly enjoying this. However you look at it, Ronnie is a fairly awful human being.
Dude devils tower is a GIGANTIC petrified tree 🌲 trunk, which appears to have been limbed down before being covered in volcanic ash. Bring your piano and play the alien song 👽✌️🌲
I own DVDs of three, possibly, four, different editions of CETK, and in not one of them is an extra five seconds where Roy, after climbing himself in through the kitchen window and slamming the window shut, reopens the window and tosses out one of neighbor Mrs. Harris's ducks which somehow ended up in Roy's house. I remember that specific incident from watch the film years ago on television.
No there are times when people are acting irrational (including women.) And they need told be told their actions are crazy. If you can't understand that then you evidently do not possess any ability to self reflect. But being objective here Roy was clearly off his rocker and out of line calling her crazy in this scene.
I hate to say it, but this was the worst scene in the entire movie. Him building that inside and destroying the house was ridiculous. It was a typical nuke the fridge moment for Spielberg.
Rest In Peace Teri Garr December 11 1944-October 29 2024, she died from complications of multiple sclerosis today, she was 79 years old
Indeed.... I came here specifically for the "What?"
She was 🔥 HOT! especially in Mr.mom when she was dressed like a business woman
Rest in Peace for Teri Garr...
Rip peace
Teri Garr was beautiful in every movie she was in..... RIP Teri Garr...
We all miss Terri Garr RIP
I know exactly how Roy is feeling and what he's going through. I've been feeling like this for the last 2 months. Frenzy. Love this movie! RIP Teri!
🙏😇🙏 Terri Garr thanks for the Great memories 🙏😇🙏 RIP we will see you later ❤️💕❤️
He driven into madness with this encounter
I honestly can't blame her for leaving at this point. I would've.
This scene reminds me of my childhood for some reason lol I had a parent who did crazy stuff like this
Did he see a UFO?
when i was a kid i found this scene funny, but now i realize how tragic it is

What's tragic is that Ronnie and the kids may never truly understand what has happened to Roy. Hopefully someone explains it all to them.
I still find it hilarious 😂
This is such a realistic depiction of what would happen.
Your wife wouldn’t support you.
And you’d be very OK getting on the ship with the aliens. 😂

There’s two things you’ve missed, my friend. Know what they are?

Haha!! Paul building his Volcano in his living room..
Ronnie really had enough of Roy’s insanity.
I like the detail of his daughter screaming when he throw the brick 🧱 0:29

A pretty good nervous breakdown scene I gotta admit.
My house is this cluttered but Amazon is the culprit
Whenever a man says “that’s crazy”, after you make a statement, leave immediately. She didn’t the right thing.

La troisième dimension tout qu'un film.
What is wrong with him? Is he crazy?
Shouldn’t it be RONNIE has a breakdown?
She's got the kids to think about I guess

Ah. The delectable Teri Garr.
Calgon take me away
Honest, judge - I don't know what got into her!
This movie was so stupid. Why didn't he just make it outside? There was no reason for him to bring all that inside smh
Even Spielberg has admitted that as a father now, he wouldn't make this film exactly like this.
No that would be telling now wouldn't it? th-cam.com/video/JaBlw1gNWdg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=59_o7Y_irDgLY73Y hehe
