That was fun Timmy Joe, I used to be into guitars until I got into computers so this fits nicely with what I like. I don't know about everyone else around here, but I sure do appreciate it. Have a good day man.
I was a video camera man and photographer for Australian Zeppelin for 5 years, this takes me back to the good old days, thank you for the memories you jolted in me. Add this sound to your intro who knows it might pic up.
Literally just picked up one of these for $40 used and already had the same pickups ordered when I saw your video this morning. I’m planning a similar build, so yours was nice to see and the timing was great! Looking forward to seeing more guitar videos from you in the future 👊🏼🤘🏼🎸
I am very glad that I found this video on TH-cam. Just recently I bought myself the same Epiphone for $ 120 in a rather deplorable condition. Now I'm repairing it a little. This is my first Les Paul type guitar. I've been dreaming of a vintage sunburst for a very long time, with a branded slightly yellowish plastic on the pickguard and the pickups frame. And so, recently I realized my dream, and at the same time I bought some missing spare parts along with plastic. But alas, I could not imagine what the result would be in the end. Your video literally showed everything I was hatching in my head. Now, however, I want to install a coil switch on top, like the classic Les Paul. I am insanely grateful to you, comrade! I wish you creative success and growth of your channel!
Honestly didn't think this would be interesting sense I was never able to really learn the guitar I owned, but it was pretty interesting and actually enjoyed watching. Thanks Timmy Joe, also your pretty good at the guitar I guess you really can learn something new everyday.
The only thing I would do differently would be to change the knobs to cream also. I put P90s into an Epiphone SG, and it brought the guitar back to life! Great video!
Just found your channel because of the guitar mod. Now I have to check out the computer builds. Lol. You rock! I love what you did! I picked up one of these epiphanies and was really surprised. I love playing it. Think I’m gonna follow your lead, and throw a p90 in the neck pick up. Thanks for the inspiration!
One of these fell in my lap for $50. I swapped for Grover minis and a new bridge, and I love it, too. One thing - I took some Scotchbrite to the back of the neck and I was really surprised at how much smoother it feels to play. Maybe it's just me, but the glossy factory finish had my hands sticking to the neck more than I imagined. The matte finish of just a few passes with Scotchbrite made a significant difference for me.
I have a special 2 with some Seymour duncans in it that I dropped in like 6 years ago. Really thinking about doing tuners, and a nut change. Want to avoid drilling into the headstock though.
Im upgrading my epiphone les Paul special II right now.. Ordered the same pick ups that come in the Buckethead series Les Paul studio (Gibson 496R neck and 500T bridge humbuckers). I plan on ordering a small tesi killswitch and some locking tuners, and nut upgrade. Maybe even double check the cavity shielding. It’s kinda fun turning cheaper priced guitars into nice playing ones.
oh hell yeah 🤟🎸🎶 I'm always down for some guitar videos!! need to buy me another one, the only guitar I currently have is the SYN gates custom schecter , and it's a pain in the ass tuning a floyd rose bridge lol.
Fun video. You may want to consider switching over to 250k pots since you are now using single coil pickups. It should help you tame a bit of that treble. And if you get wax potted pickups...some of that hum should die down.
Dude! I watched your PC builds and other tech related videos but never subed. Then one fine Sunday morning, I just searched for a Special II review and bam! And now, you sir, have got a sub.

I didn't even know you were into guitars, but I already had trouble confusing you with another bespectacled guitar TH-camr in my feeds and now my brain is melting 😂 Nice work! 👍
Nice!!! After my nieces boyfriend walked off with my Jackson a couple years ago, I've been floating around picking up a cheap Squire Strat and slowly modding it. Since I have an almost 0 budget right now, it may be the only way I can get a decent guitar.
Part of the reason they sound so trebly and bright is because of the pots. Single coil and single coil style pickups (Jazzmaster pickups and P90s) really like 250K pots rather than the 500k pots that this guitar most likely came stock with. Having the lower resistance causes more of a treble roll-off.
Greetings from another Timmy Joe. Good job on that. I just saw this exact guitar at a pawn shop for $75. I may grab it and do something similar to what you did.
You'd be surprised how many people that are interested in PC Hardware also like guitars or even play themself, so keep at it. I personally also own multiple guitars, some of wich I completely customised myself. One is a noname Stratocaster that I originally bought for 60 Bucks and I only kept the body of that guitar and replaced everything else on it. It has a silver metallic paintjob on the body, C-Shape full maple neck with skunkstripe on the back, black tortoise tripplelayer pickguard and backplate, Fat Pole Singlecoils and all Gold Hardware, except for the volume and toneknobs wich are black anodized metal speed Knobs (with a white pearl inlay for the volume only). The other two are a Les Paul Studio lookalike from a company named Steiner, has Full Mahagony body with set Mahagony neck and curved Maple Top and has a flat red paintjob. I only changed the Stock Pickups for a set of higher output Bladebuckers with Red and Black covers. And last but not least a ESP LTD AX-50 that I completely stripped down and turned into my own interpretation of the Max Cavalera signature Model ESP AX from 2007.
OH EM GEE! Davey504 would be so disappointed but I think this was a pretty decent treat. I slapped like for ya bud! I get it where some might not be interested in this but it's tech all the same and I approve. Look forward to more if it happens our way. Cheers!
Very nice review. I've got one in black coming tomorrow. The only thing I'm changing immediately are the tuners .I got a set of Klusons that are a direct swap.on StewMac and think that'll make it a tidy little guitar .I can live with the stock pick up s for now but great job all round with yours.
Hey Timmy Joe, I've been following you for a few years now, and this is great. I love your channel. First time ever watching this guy. Seems like I am the only one, as I was specifically searching for this guitar model. He seems very enthusiastic, as well as generally knowledgeable on the subject. The passion is encouraging. That said, he has a whole lot of work to do to even reach what I would consider intermediate level (I am nowhere near a pro myself). *note: consider this constructive criticism, and completely in good faith* I would recommend bumping up targeted/skill focused practice time to at least 30-45 min per day, 5-6 days per week on top of the warm-up exercises and noodling. Sounds like there is also a tremendous need for a metronome here as well; although they are very tedious work, they are incredibly effective at correcting issues with timing. This will go a lot further than buying more gear. Believe me, I’ve been there. Probably dropped $20-30k in guitars and amps (custom shop stratocaster and half-stack 100w Marshall was my go-to, but had many other MIA Fender/Gibson guitars and brand name amps) before I was good enough to even jam out with other musicians without sounding incompetent. Also, is that LP out of tune? I’ve always preferred Tubescreamers with single coils, especially Strats. It would be interesting to hear one with a P90 setup. They also do better with only a small amount of overdrive/gain, if any, and pair with a fuzz really well. Anyway, love your channel!
pretty cool how much you can do with a fairly small budget and a bit of ingenuity. It may not be as good as the guitar in the store, but if it serves what you wanted it for then that's all that really matters. Nice job
You could try pouring hot wax in the pickups to keep them quiet. I read about that in an interview with Eddie Van Halen. But those chinese p90's do sound good.
Just bought a Special VE. Will be putting GFS Mean 90's in. You might try those if you still have that guitar and haven't upgraded the pickups yet. I use GFS Mean 90's in all my HB replacements and they are silent. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
@@newtownmitch I didn't on this one. It's pickups have something I like..raspy and harmonic vs fizzy..so I kept them. I don't regret putting Mean 90's into any of my guitars. They all still sound different but with clearer lows and bell like highs. I hope you it works out for you if you do. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
@@hanovergreen4091 Yeah I know what you mean. I kinda like them too, but I like to modify everything. I changed the tuner for Grover Rotomatic, that was a really needed mod, I changed the nut and I think the only things I'll change will be maybe add a pickguard and the pickup mounting ring. Cream colored for both of these things.
@@newtownmitch yeah mon! Those are good ideas...Mine is Red stain so the cream rings will pop. Maybe a tortoise pickguard :) Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Try using a compressor pedal. Depending on how you set it it can 'sweeten' up your tone by emphasizing different frequency ranges that are usually more quiet, and suppress others that are crazy loud
I own three one one sg special two an two les Paul specials . I just did a pickup swap from a parts epoc Baldwin an it just sounds 100% different. Deeper lows brighter highs an looks better too its black with white pickup rings an jack plate cover an chrome humbuckers . Probably going to do a white poker chip an switch tip an change the knobs for tone an volume an its gonna pop . An the best part i scored them all for pretty cheap shipped too.
I was really hoping to see how you set up the alignment for the Kluson tuners. I'm doing a mod to the exact same guitar, with a set of Kluson Revolution tuners. As with yours, the crappy OEM tuners are corner mount holes, where the Kluson tuners are centred, top and bottom. What did you do to square them to the post holes?
I'm not sure what the output on those P90s is, but from the sound of it, I don't think those Epiphone POTS are able to push them properly. Epi POTS are usually 250k and P90s are traditionally around 500-800k. It looks alright tho, ya dun good on the external mods! Also, if you're looking for an all tube amp that's affordable, the Peavey Windsor amp is an incredible bargain. The sound signature is modeled after the Marshall JCM800 2203 specifically. They sell in a 100watt head and a 50watt combo. That VOX amp you have is good, but it only has a tube preamp section. I used to run the 100watt head through a Marshall 1960A cab (the JCM900 series with Celestion G12T-75 12' speakers) and it was all tube british distortion for DAYS!
I watched this as I was thinking of buying one of these type of Epiphones but with the single humbucker and fitting a dogear P90 as I have seen another youtuber do . But now I am not so sure after watching your mods to this two pickup version , as you have a real rocker on the bridge pickup and that fifties sound at the neck pickup it is fantastic . I have already modded an Ibanez Gio from three pickups to two soapbar P90 pickups and it is great but does not have the same tone as your mods . I wonder if soapbar ,dogear or humbucker shape P90 pickups would all have similar or different tone if fitted to the same guitar
Nice work, great change up. Totally late with a comment, but I'd like to see some digital audio work done on PC/cpu and relevant testing comps--the 'tube has enough blender benching and file compression tests.... You got skills.
Nice one! Always saw a guitar in the background and was really interested. ;) This guitar looks far better now and the neck pickup sounds just awesome. Not sure about the bridge PU. I'd try getting the pickup closer to the strings in order to give it a bit more power and low end. Or maybe go back to the humbucker there (maybe put an open cover on it in order to give it a comparable look to the P90) and screw it down in order to lower the output level closer to the neck pickup and also get a more dynamic sound out of it. But don't touch the neck pickup - that's just great now. What about the string action? And congratulations to your AC10. I'd love to see a few more guitar related videos although a microphone in front of the amp would do a great job then. Yeah, computers are my hobby but guitars are a part of my job. :D
The only thing the Epi LP Special needs by way of upgrade is the verbal part of their online reviews. They are top notch from out the box. Don't change the pups or nothing. They're Epiphone so no discernable "improvement" is gained by dumping cash into them. I've done some upgrades on pups but I got shanked. Just not worth it. No change. You want to change your guitar tone, get a pedal. By the way I like your review. If upgrading guitar stuff is important to you then gitter done! It's just that I find it's futile. Amps and pedals are where the noise comes from.
Nice man! I was looking to do a project very similar to this when I was getting back into playing and ended up getting a Glen Burton Les Paul-style (Amazon special) for around the same $$ you've spent here. Has the sunburst finish and a lot of the Gibson-style hardware, even humbuckers (not the best, but not bad).
If you want the best tone mod for a special II.. FIRST. Brass nut. Set up as you said.. But the pickups.. Get covers and gold pole screws if you want pretty. But swap the slug coils between the pickups. Wire the neck in parallel and the bridge in series. Switch the tone pot to the volume pot and obviously the Cap with it.. As the A500k should be the volume and the B500 tone... The pickups average their inductance and resistance... Which was 12k & 17k on the last one I had.. Covers and gold poles make them pretty again. Should run about 7k neck and 14k bridge. A push pull could be added just for the bridge series-parallel but you'd have to add wire... And it's not worth it.
Would love to see you do a guitar or even a music channel, maybe related stuff like AI, whatever. I liked this video. I'm upgrading an Epi Les Paul Special I.
This guitar is good for lead and rythym you jus have to set up the pickup height and poil piece height. I personally like humbuckers better. You can set them up to sound like a p90 if you know what your doing

Just bought a Special VE. Will be putting GFS Mean 90's in. You might try those if you still have that guitar and haven't upgraded the pickups yet. I use GFS Mean 90's in all my HB replacements and they are silent. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Did you end up putting the the mean 90 in it ? Do you like it ? I'm thinking about doing the same mod.
I own three one one sg special two
an two les Paul specials .
This was just awesome! Wish i could play the guitarr. Thoroughly enjoyed it
Timmy, you need to get an Universal Audio Twin Duo interface, they are awesome! The Unison preamps with impedance matching are incredible!
There needs to be a Timmy Joe "Shredding about computer parts" video.
Fun, I am a modder, and just received a free special II and plan to mod it up👍
The only thing the Epi LP Special needs by way of upgrade is the verbal part of their online reviews.
COOL TImmy I didn't know you were a player I am too. Would like to see more guitar content! Thanks!
I have a Peavey Predator tuned C sharp with a Duncan Invader in it. plays like a normal guitar.
Just got into guitars a month or so ago so it’s sick to see this type of content from you! PCs and guitars? Found the perfect channel 👍
Same here! Started in August and I love it
Great video! I don’t even play guitar but it was fun to watch and learn
I enjoyed this! Can You tell Me why my guitar that looks identical to Yours in this video is called A Special 2 -LE?
i love it when justin roiland makes guitars
what kind of guitar do i have? its an ephiphone special les paul ii BUT it says gibson on it too?
Would love to see you do a guitar or even a music channel, maybe related stuff like AI, whatever. I liked this video. I'm upgrading an Epi Les Paul Special I.
you should play some cool intro tunes or just play little segments. Man you can play guitar...That sounds so cool Timmy.
I didnt know you were a guitar tweaker like me!
Wrap mothers Christmas lights around the neck of it and BOOM Rgb a performance boost for those hard core rockers lol
Nice vid TJ , would love more of this 👍😉
I just started playing guitar (and bass) again recently as well. What are the odds?
everyone needs a tube amp in there life. in my life is a Marshall Origin 20c
Who knew. Timmy Joe can shred 🤘🤘🤘🤘😎
How are you finding the AC10? I am thinking of getting one myself to use with my fender jaguar
This guitar is good for lead and rythym you jus have to set up the pickup height and poil piece height. I personally like humbuckers better. You can set them up to sound like a p90 if you know what your doing
Does Humbucker 650R/700T use battery??
Oh I’m super down for this keep it up 👍
