Outstanding, Gary!!! It’s always a pleasure watching you turn wood since you come up with all sorts of neat jigs to assist in cutting and in assembly. As a retired engineer, I designed things but did not make the parts. It was the machinists who came up with the way to machine parts using jigs they made. The same for your wood turnings. Those who do the actual work are the true masters of machining and turning wood. I am always in awe in what you come up with to turn wood. I learn so much from you; even in my 70s I am still learning.
Thank you very much John. As a retired wood pattern maker I loved working with the engineers where I would take their drawings and design a way to make it so it could be used to make metal castings. I will never forget working with and engineer at the former(Freightliner Trucks) now Daimler and none of his fellow engineers could even see from the drawing what he had designed. As soon as I got it I started asking a few questions and he said: You can actually see what I have designed! That was a good feeling as I had just finished my apprenticeship a few years before that. To add to the story my son went to work for them years later as a mechanical engineer. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
Gary you never stop amazing me with these segmented pieces. Absolutely mesmerizing. If people only knew how much work and money goes into these pieces.
Thank you very much Ronald! Very happy you enjoyed the video even with just a little bit of turning going on. For sure there is lots of time and work to do these. Purple Heart is not my favorite but it really worked out nicely here. And over time it darkens which will just add to the look. Thanks for watching, Gary

Your certainly a master of the unusual! What a fascinating piece! Surprisingly, it still holds it’s illusion, ever after turning! Quite a beautiful piece with a wonderful finish, right out of a spray can!
Thank you very much Joe! I am sure if I would have dished it out a lot the look would have changed. That was the main reason for having a thing glue up to start with. I was thinking about using Polycrylic on it which also would have been nice. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, Oh, my. You've done some masterpieces, but this one......... It's outstanding! Your choice of woods, precision and execution are simply the best. You're a master, for sure. I want to make this. I haven't turned any thing in quite a while. This has given me some much needed inspiration. I guess I'll brave the 100+ heat and start selecting woods and dimensions. RP
Thanks so much RP. This was a lot of fun to figure out and make. I normally use Walnut, Maple and Cherry for for tumbling blocks but with this I wanted a dark back ground and I think the Walnut would not have stood out. The Teak worked perfectly. And I appreciate your very kind comments. I know you will enjoy making it and have lots of fun doing it. We are supposed to hit 102 this weekend but that changes every 5 minutes. Enjoy the process and I am sure you will do great. Take care, Gary
Another one!!! Do you stay up all night thinking of these. What amazing work Gary, you sure can keep a captive audience, thank you for great learning videos!!!
Thank you Tom. Well I do try to get a little sleep. But I have these weird dreams and wake up with these things on my mind LOL. Take care my friend, Gary
That piece is incredibly complicated and so beautiful. I love it. Would do enjoy having it hanging on my wall. Wasn’t sure where you were going with it, but as you always do, your videos take you on this wonderful journey. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you very much. Having never done one like this I needed to line up all the steps in my head. Happy it worked out. I have seen a cutting board with an illusion that I really want to do. This will be time consuming but I think I have it figured out. Just have to figure out how to fit it into a turning. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Thomas. I have studied these types of images for a long time and always thought I should see if I could make one. As it turns out I found it was pretty much based on geometry which I love so it ended up being easier than I expected. Still a lot of work to get there but at least I could see where I was going. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Donna. I am a retired wood pattern maker and worked with angles daily. I did work with a lot of engineers and made what they designed in 2D into a 3D pattern. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary
Wow. I just don't know what to say, Gary. This seems like the most complicated segment piece you have done but only you know if that's true. It certainly, for me, requires the most studying to see how it was done and even though I watched how it was done, I still can't quite comprehend it. I guess I will just say, it's magnificent in it's complexity and stirs the imagination and activates little used brain cells. As always, such a great finish to cap it all off! Fun to watch, that's for sure! Phil
Thank you Phil! Well I would say it was the most complex glue up I have done. But after doing one section of the center piece the light bulb lit up. Hmm there are only 4 shapes to the whole thing. Well it was still tricky gluing it up but that gave me the feeling that this will work for sure. And for sure those little brain cells got a real work out so I have some really easy(I hope) turnings lined up. Just real busy with a lot of things going on. I told you about the rats chewing a wire but that was and easy fix. We went camping for a family reunion last week and went to start the generator. Dang things chewed 7 wires so it would not start. And one took the trip with us to where we camped. While trying to clean out the nest he jumped out and landed on my chest. So I think I deserve a few easy turnings. That is my story and I am sticking with it LOL. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thanks so much Richard. Once I saw a picture of this I just had to do it. I need to stay off those 3D Optical Illusions pages. Some crazy paintings for sure. Thanks for watching. Gary
The optical illusion is great, the segments seems to stand up and jump at you, no matter the angle. This piece reminds me of the famous "Never ending stairs" painting. ;-)
Thank you Robert. I might have to look into those "Never Ending Stairs" The right choice of wood can really make some cool illusions for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary
I beautiful piece! I made my first tumbling bowl last week and it pales by comparison to your piece. Really looking forward to some posted dimensions on this one so I can get started on my next project!
Thank Jim. Tumbling bowls are fun to do. I think my next one will be a twist on a tumbling bowl and a cool illusion. Then I will do the break down of the one you are talking about. Thanks for watching. Gary
It's Beautiful, Memorizing... Just simply Amazing! It really does fool your eyes. I used to watch my dad, as a kid, while he was wood turning, and was simply amazed by some of the things he made. I'm still amazed by the things you can do today! I wish I could of had his lathe because I'm still just star struck when I watch you at work and would love to be able to do some of these things myself. I work odd jobs and am always looking for different avenue to make some cash but if I was half ass good as yourself, I believe I had found something I love to do and can make a living from it! I would be blessed! That's far off, so until then, I'll continue to watch what observe what beautiful work you do! It might be interesting to see the actual 3d structure next to this. A cool conversation piece for sure!
Thank you very much Angela I appreciate all your comments. I hope someday you will get that lathe you are wanting. I do all kinds of wood turning and do not sell anything. If I did it would probably be things like this. I think there is a lot of people wanting to sell the similar turnings. Thanks for watching, Gary
Well Gary I've tried your cycle making jig your press and table sled and this is out of this world you are a master would be grateful if you gave sizes so would make my attempt easier I even made your new circle making jig and I can't thank you enough for sharing them with us all you should be on TV with the expertise you have and are willing to share keep up the great work
Thank you very much Daemon. I appreciate your comments and happy you have made some of my jigs and fixtures. I would be happy to share the sizes of these pieces but to be honest I do not know exactly what they what they are. Once I adjusted a scrap piece to fit I just went ahead and cut the pieces as needed. What I plan on doing is a video on the 4 sizes needed and make something special at the same time. So give me a little time to work all this out and I will share all the information with you. If i do not make the video soon I will create a cutting list on the sizes. These sizes will have to be exact starting from the width of the strips being used. Keep an eye open for this in a month or so. if not you can hit me up and I should be able to help you out. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Beautiful project. My loving wife (BOSS) of 50+ years has put this project on the must-make now honey-do list. I have the time and wood, I just need the dimensions of the segments. I tried to guess the dimensions, but failed, now I am hoping to see your cut list. Thank you for any help and information you can provide. Take care and be Safe, Bruce
@@ThePapa1947 This really great! I'd like to make one. Please send the sizes of the pieces. I made your bowl of blocks and it turned out great...thanks for showing that one.
I don't know how you come up with stuff like this but holy cow ! This piece is just incredible . You are the master of illusion ! Great job Gary . Boy wow ! That heat this past week !
Thank you Jon. Happy you enjoyed the video. It is a pretty cool illusion for sure. Yes the heat was brutal. Pretty warm today and supposed to hit 100 tomorrow. Thanks for watching and stay cool. Gary
Gary, that piece is absolutely stunning! I LOVE it for all sorts of reasons, including the fact there are so many ways to see something different it it depending on what a person concentrates on. I think you've really outdone yourself with this!
Many thanks Grant. I love doing these and now I need to come up with something else to outdo myself again. This is not going to be easy LOL. Take care, Gary
Thank you very much Laura! There is just the one angle...30 degrees. I feel I need to make a video showing what can be done with that one angle. Thanks for watching, Gary
This is truely amazing. The illusion kicks in the more you look at it. I paused on the last picture and it got more and more depth to it. Greetings from Germany and keep it up!
I have only just discovered your channel. I loved every minute of this optical illusion. Well Done! I have subscribed and looking forward to watching your other videos and any future masterpieces you make.👍
Thanks so much Dave! I have lots of segmented work on my channel you can go back and watch. I will be doing more but because we have a lot going on it will be a month or so before I can do one like this again. Thanks again, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Hi Garry, It will take me that long to catch up with all of your videos, so no worries mate. I am going to show this one to the guys at the Men's Shed.
I do not come close to doing the type of work you do. As an example, I am currently working on a simple walking stick out of cedar. But, it is true that the more things you do, the more ideas you get for other projects. I watched my granddaughters play with the plates, knives, forks and spoons I made them out of wood. That gave me other ideas for them. Thanks for the fun, Gary.
Thank you Travis and it is so true that trying new things will improve the skills. But you need to be careful not to take on too much as that could discourage you and set you back some. . That said I study something until I can see it in my head then I know I can do it Thanks for watching. Gary
Absolutely amazing! This takes the tumbling blocks (that I have done) to another level. Could you please share the sizes of the blocks that you used? Again, GREAT project, a job very well done!!
Thank you very much James. This is based off of how tumbling blocks are made. I have done a number of them. And how stars are made. Same with that I have done a number of turnings with this star. I would be happy to share the sizes and plan on making a video showing how they are cut and sizes. I think it will be easier that way because I know a lot of people will ask. If this does not happen in the next 3 or 4 weeks ask again and I will let you know what these are. I actually do not have it written down anywhere I just adjusted my sled with a scrap piece then cut all the needed pieces. Thanks for watching, Gary
Wow man! That creation is unbelievable. It puts me off balance just looking at it and it blows my mind that it is (almost) flat. Absolutely incredible! I doff my hat to you sir.
Thank you very much Bob, I am very happy you enjoy my work and wish to copy it. If ever you have any questions let me know and I will try and help. I have something in the works to help explain this process for the illusion I made. I will have it in about a month or less. Take care and have fun turing. Gary
Thank you Gene! Yes lots of work and it is a good thing I like this kind of work. I have more of this type planned not just like this one. Thanks for watching, Gary
Wow! Just Wow! Watching this video makes me want to turn, just to do what you've done. To answer your comment, yes, I like this. I subscribed to see more of this. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much Greg. There will be more of this for sure. But I mix natural turnings from pieces of a tree as well. These glue ups take a lot of time and the wood I get from trees that have been cut down is free. But for sure I will keep making turnings like this one. Take care, Gary
Untill now I never wrote a comment on woodturning TH-cam. But now I had to. Your work makes me think of the work of M.C. Escher. Like me he is a Dutchman. It is absolutely amazing what you are doing.
Thank you very much Joost. I have done a few other pieces and have been told the same thing about thinking of M.C. Escher. I consider that a real compliment. Thanks for that. Take care,. Gary
Thank you very much Wesley. For sure the right colors can really set it off. At first I was not sure about using Purple Heart but it worked out great. And I really do not like turning Wenge that much. It can chip out at the wrong time. Happy you enjoyed the video. Take care, Gary
That pattern is mind-blowingly beautiful, even before turning.
Thank you Jimmy! I have been temped to not even turn some of these.

Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Beautiful project. My loving wife (BOSS) of 50+ years has put this project on the must-make now honey-do list. I have the time and wood, I just need the dimensions of the segments. I tried to guess the dimensions, but failed, now I am hoping to see your cut list. Thank you for any help and information you can provide. Take care and be Safe, Bruce
@@ThePapa1947 This really great! I'd like to make one. Please send the sizes of the pieces. I made your bowl of blocks and it turned out great...thanks for showing that one.
I watch a lot of these types of videos. This is my favorite!👍
Thanks so much Patty. I have a couple others I am working on the design and will be doing them in the future.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Absolutely amazing!! You’re an awesome artist. I can’t wait to see more.
Thank you very much Gail. Most of the illusions are inspired by the artist M.C. Ecsher. I appreciate you watching and commenting,
Gary
Beautiful work
Thank you very much Stephanie I appreciate you watching,
Gary
I don't know how you come up with stuff like this but holy cow ! This piece is just incredible . You are the master of illusion ! Great job Gary . Boy wow ! That heat this past week !
Thank you Jon. Happy you enjoyed the video. It is a pretty cool illusion for sure.
Yes the heat was brutal. Pretty warm today and supposed to hit 100 tomorrow.
Thanks for watching and stay cool.
Gary
Thanks for sharing awesome 😍
Thank you Aras and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Wow that is cool. Love the optical illusion. Wish I was good with math. 🙂
Thank you very much Laura! There is just the one angle...30 degrees.
I feel I need to make a video showing what can be done with that one angle.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
This is truely amazing. The illusion kicks in the more you look at it. I paused on the last picture and it got more and more depth to it. Greetings from Germany and keep it up!
Thank you very much. Happy you enjoyed it.
Take care, I'm Gary
Thaaaaat's amazing - the 3D- impression is really extraordinary!

Thanks again,
Gary
But you need to be careful not to take on too much as that could discourage you and set you back some. .
That said I study something until I can see it in my head then I know I can do it
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I just subscribed and was going to ask the same question about the sizes. Can't wait for the follow-up video giving more detail.
@@johanvandyk6532 thank you very much. It will be coming soon.

Awesome as always.I would love to see the wedgie version as well.
Thank you Bob. I will start designing something that can be done easily enough.

Gary
I'm glad you warned us that it was an optical illusion. Watching it come together was so fascinating. So much fun!.
Seeing the hugs as you build your pieces is part of the fun.
Jigs.
I had to remind myself now and then as well!

Sir you are an artistic genius. This is the BEST 2-dimensional example of mathematics and woodworking to date.
Thank you very much. Your comments are much appreciated.

Thank you very much Chhimi !
Gary
Wow!
Take care,
Gary
Untill now I never wrote a comment on woodturning TH-cam. But now I had to.
Your work makes me think of the work of M.C. Escher. Like me he is a Dutchman.
It is absolutely amazing what you are doing.
Thank you very much Joost. I have done a few other pieces and have been told the same thing about thinking of M.C. Escher.
I consider that a real compliment. Thanks for that.
Take care,.

Gary, that is absolutely amazing! Geometry and color shades, wow! Super cool effect.
Wes @ Piedra Designs
Thank you very much Wesley. For sure the right colors can really set it off. At first I was not sure about using Purple Heart but it worked out great. And I really do not like turning Wenge that much. It can chip out at the wrong time.
Happy you enjoyed the video.
