It wasn't exactly the same Foreman that beat Frazier and Norton. The AIi loss changed him. Once he had been figured out, he had to change his style. The only other things that George could do was--jab and slug off of the success of the jab(like he had beaten Chuvalo). This style was not nearly as threatening to a defensive boxer(even a flatfooted one) like Young. The jump on the opponent, bell-to-bell style was gone. The 7th round showed you what that fight could have looked like had he fought Foreman before Zaire. Two or three rounds of that and Young was through. It's also important to note that Foreman was maybe the best body puncher of all time and Young was vulnerable to that punch. Young was so concerned with defending the face that you could hit him there all fight long.
To give you some idea, Norton--as accurate as he was--could not hit Young to the head all night. However--when he started body punching--he turned it around. After round 4, Norton gave up and only threw body punches and that's how he won. Norton had a solid body punch, but--if George could hit you there without being blocked--he'd likely force you down within a 1/3 of a round. Just look at where his dents were in the heavy bag(in the body region of the bag). Seeing as George was both a great body puncher and aggressive before Zaire and Young's defense was athletic and head-centric, as well--I think he'd beat Young before Zaire. Even then, I still thought Young did some whining at the ref at that fight to stop any aggression that George might try. Call it the art of fighting without fighting*--which has no place in boxing...
*That's exactly what his outside the rope tricks were with AIi...

Jimmy was always one of my favorite fighters...on top of that Jimmy Young seemed like a very nice man. Because he was one of my favorites, I wanted a chance to see him fight before he retired. So, my friends and I took an opportunity to travel to Atlantic City to see his fight against Pat Cuillo. This was after the Page loss and Young was entering the tail end of his career. Young was not in the best of shape, and lost a 10 round decision. As Young was leaving the ring with his handlers, my friends and I approached him. This man stopped and spoke with us right outside of the ring, with his robe on for 20 minutes! His handlers wanted him to leave, but he was more than happy to talk about his fighting career with us (he was still very upset with the Norton decision!) You could also tell that he really appreciated the fact that we knew a lot about his career, and that we were still fans even though he was no longer a contender. (I wish I would have asked him about the Shavers fights!) When he was finally leaving, he asked us each of our names, shook all of our hands and thanked us for being his fans. He gave me his handwraps (which I still have) and left with his cornermen. He didn't have to spend that time with us, but he did...and that says a lot about him. This is why it irks me sometimes when I see posters bashing him...because there was much more to him than being just a defensive heavyweight. So thanks again for putting this tribute up!

@@RichtheFightHistorian Also, my friends and I snuck into the post-fight card buffet room, that was set up for the fighters and their handlers. We were in there for about 20 minutes eating, drinking.. when none other than Philly-Atlantic City ring announcer Ed Derian spotted us and escorted us out!!

For some reason whether it's boxing or other areas of life some great people are denied the fame and limelight. It's as if fate is against them. Documentaries like these are so important.
I grew up watching Jimmy Young. He could dance like Ali while peppering his opponent with double left jabs. He would exert by saying "Hoop, hoop" with each popping jab. He was a master. RIP
Jimmy Young was a GREAT FIGHTER. Watched him as teenager and saw him beat Muhammad Ali but was robbed in a decision. Highly underrated! His uncanny head movement and defensive skills were amazing

Jimmy Young was the most underrated heavyweight in history..Note he beat Lyle twice...Lost to Shavers but came back and fought him to a draw...And,Oh the Foreman fight he showed the heart of a champion..He was out on his feet..But came on knocked him down.. And won the fight.I believe that's when Foreman lift boxing for ten years..His fight with Ali many believe he beat Ali at his own game but lost and then the Norton fight many felt he won he just couldn't get a fair shake in the boxing game..But his resume speaks for itself...He is a legend 🙌
I'm sitting here fascinated in watching vintage Jimmy Young, the definition of a fighter who mastered his craft in the gym. No one post 75' Honolulu upset over Ron Lyle wanted to fight Jimmy, the definitive "spoiler". There was little to gain getting embarrassed by a light hitting defensive specialist who beat or questionably lost to 3 HOF champions, one all-time KO king, held his own working with Joe Frazier, and 2x embarrassed Ron Lyle. That was how great the heavyweight division was in Jimmy's era and Young belongs within mention of a great fighter. Excellent video.

I will never forget Jimmy Young I always felt bad because to me he always won those fights especially Ali, Norton and Shavers and would get the loss. He was so hard to hit I just loved that about him. I wish Jimmy Young would have gotten his due.
Jimmy was amazing, his skill level was off the charts.

I had Jimmy winning all but 5 rounds vs Norton. All rounds were pretty close. Young had amazing skills . After Foreman hurt him, He started hitting Foreman with tight short left hooks in between and After blocking each of Foreman’s fight hands. This took incredible timing skill and bravery. One thing that I always knew about Young was that if you hurt him, or bested him during a fight, he would try to pay you back. Look at what he did to Foreman immediately after being hurt. Look at the push back against Dokes after the bell. In his prime, he had true warrior spirit and his ability to take a punch was very over looked.
The last line probably explains why he ended up with CTE ie punch drunk ... very sad.

The Young-Norton fight could have gone either way. IMO, it could have also ended in a draw. But I believe Young clearly defeated Ali. Many people believe that Norton beat Ali a few months later but the Ali-Norton fight was not nearly as close as the Ali-Young fight. IMO, Jimmy Young was the uncrowned heavyweight champion after the Ali fight.

@@johnd.597 Because i agree with the judges. Its just my opinion. Just as you have yours. Was it floyd junior got ripped off at seoul in 88? Now that was a bad decision. Im clearly an Ali fan. So i see the world thru different eyes, thats all. Ive watched docos which completely contradict the opinions on the 1st liston fight. Liston had been accused of smearing liniment on gloves in 2 other fights. Some said ali lost to doug jones. But the judges said he won. Some say ali beat frazier in ali frazier 1. My opinion is that ali won frazier 1. But i accept he lost.
@@hemana3859 I believe it was Roy Jones robbed at Seoul ‘88. There’s no reasonable explanation for Ali winning his first fight with Frazier. Absolutely none. Frazier knocked Ali down once (or twice, depending on if you think the first one was a slip or not) and gave Ali a royal ass beating. Ali won the first few rounds easily, but Frazier was pounding him from pillar to post as the fight progressed.
Jimmy Young Was one of the Best actual boxers that I ever saw in the heavyweight division. Along with Chris Bird these two proved the that the sport is called BOXING...not slugging, punching or fighting but BOXING.

5:24 Even in an interview, Big George looks so strong and intimidating. But Young defeated him. Not just defeated him, outclassed him. That fight was a technical masterpiece and perfect demonstration of speed, skill boxing ability and heart. They should give him a medal for this. I mean how many guys out there that could go to distance with Big George? He was the only fighter that holded a UD victory aganist young Foreman.
And yet Cooney KO'D him in the second round, and Foreman KO'D Cooney in the second round! lol

Yet again Foreman fought in a hot climate and with too much confidence. Young deserved his win and Foreman got religion in the dressing room.

I love Jimmy young. Underrated contender ever. Had an argument at beating Ali, close against norton and WON against a physically prime foreman. Amazing fighter. Like his style too, awkward and slick.
Edit: Young got a title against Ali because he was on his undercard in Rico. Ali vs Pierre Coopman to be exact.
Most people who watch that fight from start to finish feel he won more rounds. We know how boxing is.

Ken Norton did NOT win that fight. Muhammad Ali could make a stronger case that he beat Young than Norton could, and it would be a flimsy case at best. If Young could have learned to sit down on his punches he would have totally owned the 1970’s.

One of the most underrated heavyweights. Most ppl have never heard of him yet he beat and knocked down a young George Foreman, beat Ron lyle, Earnie shavers, gave an older Ali a run for his money and lost a contreversial split decision against Ken Norton.

Being from Philly remember him well . Used to drive around in either a blue Contatenal or Cadillac with his name in white lettering on the back. He definitely beat Ali along with Forman. Thanks for mentioning him. Like to give Tim Witherspoon a mention here too. Another tough Philly heavyweight fighter who got robbed when he lost a decision to Larry Holmes.
Ahh yes! Witherspoon!! King ruined the guy's career. Very very talented Philly fighter.
Tim Witherspoon's name popped into my head while watching this as well. Almost carbon copy. Only difference was, nobody wanted to fight Tim, he was a matchmaker's nightmare. It was very hard to look good against him, win or lose
Philly in the house! We contributed many greats to the history of boxing. Look them up!

This is the insane thing about boxing. This guy is a few rounds from being a legitimate Hall of Fame fighter and a legend. Imagine a win over Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Ken Norton Sr.? Like, dude would've made millions of dollars and be idolized right now.

I was only saying the other day how many top boxers have been either 1) all but forgotten or 2) hardly ever mentioned these days and Jimmy Young is a great example of this. Others just off the top of my head include, Hector Camacho, Terry Marsh, John Mugabi (your brilliant documentary video notwithstanding), Dennis Andries, Jeff Fenech, Michael Spinks etc.
It is long overdue that people finally see what a master boxer Jimmy Young was....
I remember as a kid, loving watching Jimmy Young Box. Man he was good.

Jimmy Young was a GR8 fighter ad well. He sent George Foreman into retirement after he beat him. When he fought Ali, both displayed their technical boxing skills.
That was a name well known in my house growing up. He was one of my dad's favorite heavyweights because of his high skill and respectful demeanor. A true Philly fighter. Sleep in peace to the Uncrowned Champ..

Best defensive heavyweight i have ever seen! He counter punched the hell out of Foreman during the fight in Puerto Rico. It was do bad for Foreman that he claims he was speaking in tongues in the dressing room after the fight. This fight was his own epiphany!
Well done! A fighter can make a living being a "stepping stone", sadly this man accepted that fate.
Thanks a lot for this much needed video. Jimmi Young, what a boxer! When you look just at his record, guy's a joke. But he gave goats a run for their money. Winning over Foreman(and sending George to retirment), and losing two controversial decisions over Ali and Norton, defeating Lyle twice. Hats off Jimi.

Jimmy Young was my favorite boxer growing up. I still believe Young defeated Ali. Young landed more clean punches and outboxed the champ. Many people will say that Young's tactics of sticking his upper body between the ropes was against the rules but Ali did not fight a clean fight either. Young was robbed and was the uncrowned heavyweight champion. It was heartbreaking to see what a proud fighter like Jimmy Young had become later in his career. He was not a stepping stone; he was more than an "opponent". Jimmy Young was a champion.

Young was about as good as jimmy Ellis. But in that era. He might ve been champion like. Ellis only had to beat Quarry. Basically a Bum. Who got lucky against shavers. One fight in his career
I have to admit I did not realise Jimmy was so good a boxer. He is up there with the very best. Such a very nice person as well. To beat George Foreman in the good days is a major star achievement. Today Jimmy would wipe the floor with all the top heavyweights. They would not land a punch on him.

Boxing career to side this is one of the kindest human being I have ever had the privilege to encounter. When I met Jimmy his days of boxing way back in the rear view he was a ordinary citizen who if you didn't know who he once was you would only know Jimmy but I knew him as the boxer without a glaring name who beat M.Ali but was robbed by the scoring table and or back then the MOB so I approached him at first he seem hesitant to allow his mind to wander back in time but then his response was short and poetic (and if you closed your eyes you would have thought you were talking to M.Ali) he said "what I did to Ali you should check out the other fighter I shared the ring with" and so I did just that and I must say I was surprised but highly impressed by J.Young that the next day I called hi champ and from that point we remained our friendship until his passing....Rest in PEACE ✌️ CHAMP!!!!
I watched the Ali - Young fight on TV. As a big Ali fan, I felt Young was robbed, he definitely outboxed and outworked Ali.

Jimmy fought just about every big name heavyweight during his day. We all know the superstar champions, but guys like Jimmy are fascinating to me. Tough, game challengers that for whatever reason never became champion. Rest easy Jimmy you were a winner!

This is so cool. Because i've always heard of the greats of the era speaking on Jimmy Young, but i never knew a thing about him.
Even if you don't like boxing, the competitors in it are so exceptional, it's worth learning their story. Even if most are cautionary tales.

One of the slickest boxers ever. Very hard to hit. His fights were difficult to score. I thought he had slight edge against Norton. He outpointed Ali but his illegal tactics if ducking out if ring cost him. Rip Jimmy young

He should have been crowned Champion that night against Ali. He Won that fight and he was right there with Ken Norton in Nov. 1977.

It should have been a draw atleast over a win because of his 'defensive' rope a dope.
Jimmy Young beat Norton too. He won 9 to 10 rounds in that fight. Norton became the champ 4 months later. Jimmy Young got cheated outta the championship twice

What a treat on a Saturday afternoon, Rich! Jimmy Young might be the most underrated boxer in history. Great skill, great chin. He took some murderous shots from Foreman... and he really stung Ali a number of times. And it was such a bonus to hear the legendary Howard Cosell call the Foreman-Ellis fight. Thank you so much for another outstanding video. Seeing a new one of your videos is like opening a Christmas present. They're just great.

Nah he was about an 1 inch and a half smaller. 6'1 and a half. (billed at 6'2)Foreman was 6'3 billed at 6'4 sometimes

Cosell was a television mastermind above everything else and knew very well that Jimmy Young with his defensive fighting style and poor communication would be bad for ratings. This was all beyond Young's control and the judges reflected that. Let's not forget that this was all going on around the same time as the Ring Magazine/ABC US tournament nonsense. The fix was in on multiple fronts.

Jimmy Young was truly an unsung Great and more than deserved to be mentioned right along with the Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Quarry, Lyle, Shavers and all the rest of the Masters of Pugilism who made up the Golden Age. The fact that Young battled Ali, Norton and Shavers to losing end decisions or in Shaver's case a draw, and has as many knowledgeable boxing fans who thought he won all those fights as those who thought he lost more than speaks for itself. In addition to the aforementioned razor thin outcomes, Jimmy nearly KO'd Foreman and took a clear cut decision and took two decisions from the ever dangerous Ron Lyle. Jimmy also beat fighters who lurked in the top 15 including Randy Neuman, Richard Dunn, Joe King Roman (who had secured a title fight with Foreman) and Jose Juis Garcia who had previously KO'd Ken Norton.An argument could easily be made that Young's record against the primary greats who made up the core of the Golden Age was every bit the equal of Ali's or Foreman's. Though he never held the heavyweight title, Jimmy Young can rest easy knowing that he was every bit the equal of those fighters who made up the greatest group of fighters the heavyweight division ever produced, a True member in the Pantheon of the Golden Age.

Jimmy Young is always acknowledged and well respected by boxing purists. Young hurt and knocked down a prime George Foreman. Only Ali and Lye were able to do. Young more than a ' name' in a ultra competive heavyweight era.
