Hybrid picking is actually a technique borne out of the combination of several different picking techniques such as finger-picking and economy picking. It allows you to keep the precision and attack of using a pick while also being able to hit additional notes efficiently with your other plucking fingers. It's one of those techniques that keeps me from actually learning Polyphia songs myself as I can play with a pick and I can finger-pick okay but hybrid picking cleanly is still beyond me. What's crazy to me is that even their bassist employs hybrid picking which is part of the reason that his playing also has such a standout sound.

Tim is a master at hybrid picking. If you watch any of his interviews, he is equally gifted in composition/production. On top of that, he seems like a really nice kid who had a goal from the age of 12 to be a rock star. He said he wanted to be the best guitarist in the world.... he's pretty damn close!
I started teaching myself guitar about a year ago and Tim's the reason I ever picked up a guitar after procrastinating for the entire 24 years of my life. Figured if he can play it, so can I, I just can't compose like he can. Bought their tabs and am able to make it through a lot of this song at full tempo as well as some other stuff like Divine Meditation (best song to teach yourself hybrid picking by the way. It taught me.), Goose, and Chimera. It's not the playing that's hard because it just takes intense repetition, it's comprehending how someone wrote it that bends my brain.🤯 I grew up on 70's/80's rock like GNR (Slash was previously my undisputed favorite), Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, Def leppard, Dio, Foreigner, Rainbow, etc. because that was my parent's generation, but after hearing these guys, I quickly switched over to Polyphia 100%; especially after playing their music which gave me 10 fold respect for them. Met them in KC VIP a couple weeks ago and they are as legit as can be, and extremely laid back. I am thoroughly convinced after being die hard "80's era guitarists are the best" that Tim Henson wipes the floor with his compositional and virtuosic ability. He is the greatest of our time by orders of magnitude.
Most of the time Tim isn't moving his fretting hand. He is hybrid picking with his right hand and shaping chords with the left. This allows you to cover more ground without having to spider all over the fretboard. There are times where he is all over the place but he saves that for big flashy moments.
Strategic playing that minimizes movements, reminds me of other genres where other artists develop novel techniques that shorten the delay between notes they can produce. Either way, love the comments here introducing me to the concept of hybrid picking
Also, Tim is hybrid picking. He uses the pick, his middle and ring finger to pluck the notes. It makes string skipping easier, even though I've seen vids of a younger Tim string skipping with just the pick. lol. Ive recently tried implementing it in my guitar playing and it's really changed how i view and play the ole git fiddle. I learned the intro riff to G.O.A.T., it's pretty much impossible to play without hybrid picking.

LOL I'm not a great guitar player but I've watched my little brother doing this 'HYBRID/ALTERNATE PICKING' style, where it doesn't really even look like he's picking with the 3 fingers NOT holding the pick ... but he is. I watch this video and (YES IT"S ON A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL THAN MY BROTHER ... but ...) I see the same micro-movements. I don't get how anybody can have that level of control over their small motor functions, but this proves that some of us still have ALIEN DNA from before the Flood when the ETs were down here making NEPHELYM. He also uses thumping, Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders helped him learn varipus pick styles. Not 100% on which ones.
