When my wife and first met in San Francisco more than 50 years ago, we first heard Blossom Dearie on KJAZ, a great FM station (now sadly long gone) in Alameda. We saw Blossom play live once at a little club in S.F., and she was awesome. No one ever sounded like her, and her piano playing was masterful. Another sweet memory to hold on to in my grief since my wife passed away a year ago.

She's such a unique and witty singer that it's easy to forget what an extraordinary jazz pianist she was, too. Those chords are luminous...

The world lost a great jazz singer/pianist in Blossom Dearie when she died in 2009 at her Greenwich Village apartment at age 84. She performed professionally for over 50 years and leaves us many recordings. Thanks for posting! -Peter

LAUGHING OUT LOUD WITH TEARS IN MY EYES !!!! I've know about Blossom Dearie for years but was only familiar with a couple of her tunes, more focused on the novelty of her innocent sweet voice....but now, after she's gone, I've grown to realize how delightful, soulful, cute, talented and amazing she was. She makes Jazz inspiring !! Love you Blossom !!!

Both of them are legends...but as a society we've grasped on a whole those who are the "Megastars, Moneymakers, Newsmakers", and we tend to forget those who've paved the road ahead for them to travel on! I love her voice and the ending of this song! Rest In Peace...sweet Blossom! :)

I like the use of the wind filter to help prevent Blossom from "popping" here Ps. In the 90s she purchased a Audix OM-3xb Microphone to use while touring. Unfortunately it become displaced after her home suffered water damaged. This was after she had already passed away and her family was selling a few of her instruments.

One night a girlfriend was over and I put on Live At Ronnie Scott’s to impress her. When I’m Hip came on she said, “What is this?”. At the time she was working for Barry Manilow and told me this was one of his favorite warm up songs. Now I see it was recorded by Bette Midler during the era when Barry was her piano player. It all makes sense now.

YAY! When you're a sap like me who's a jazz pianist AND cries when they hear "Figure 8" (schoolhouse rock) cause that's how they learned their multiplication tables, hearing Blossom own a tune like this is oddly full circle, and..so...well... HIP.

@megafunk (Comment #2) : Bob Dorough also wrote "Figure 8." I used to hear her at Reno Sweeney's on 13th St. in the Village back in the 70s. She did the early sets, ending by 7 p.m.

The conversation does mislead one to think that "I'm Hip" is her composition (as they talk about her writing at first), but this is not the case. "I'm Hip" is by Dave Frishberg and Bob Dorough.

Thank you for posting, I love, love, love Blossom and this song, especially. I admit to being confused, though: is this HER "I'm Hip" or Bob Dorough and Dave Frishberg's? i only ask because it starts with Dr. Billy asking her to play a number of her own composition. Did she write music to Dorough/Frishberg lyrics? Again, thanks!

I have a copy of the official Blossom Dearie songbook, in which this accompaniment of "I'm Hip" appears. The transcripton would seem to be pretty much what is played above... Note: It just a jazzy vamp, really, but is easier to play than it is to 'read' from the page, with so many of the chords being a fist-full of naturals and accidentals.
Blossom's widower supplied me the songbooks.. he kindly wrote me a little note to say it was the last one had left... (and he let me buy it, sweet man. He even put in a signed photo of Blossom, too.

Is that a lyric change from "Playboy magazine..." to "People magazine..." ? Interesting decision. I'm wondering when exactly Playboy stopped being hip. Was People ever hip? It definitely isn't now.
That's the problem with writing about being hip. Fashion changes. The only hip i've got to look forward to is a hip replacement.
