    If you have an Apple snail in a parasite free tank...
    Throw it in here, whenever you need a clean up..
    They lay eggs Above water, so no snail invasion possible.
    I just got a half dozen of those...
    They cleaned up a solid Mass of green hair in a ten gallon.
    Ate half a tank full in four days. They will eat yellowing plants, but Love hair algae, if you don not feed them.
    Then, put the snail back in its own tank.
    Amazing, what they can do!!

    👍🏻 👏 💪🏻 Way to combat that algae! The cherry shrimp are a nice addition too. I like to grow a lot of guppy grass in my mutt guppy endler tank to keep nitrates and algae at bay. When I get an over abundance of the plant, I gather the individual plant stems and make a sort of bouquet and secure it loosely near the base with another stem.. or if I have one with a root, I’ll wrap that around the base. Then I either let it float vertically or wedge it between 2 rocks. It’s still floating but it’s not taking up all the surface area at the top of the tank. This way it has the look of other stem plants. I do grow a few individually in the substrate anyway. Hopefully this method has the same effect as if I just floated them all on top (I do have a bunch of smaller pieces just floating on the surface too...gotta cover all my bases. 😆)

      @@thesmallscape They’re great because my betta can’t eat them lol. I heard some bettas are vicious nonetheless but mine never tries to bite them, though she has taken to harassing them for fun. She enjoys nudging them to make them swim just so she can chase them, the little bugger. The amanos have learnt to stand their ground as much as possible, but my betta often still gets her way. It’s good enrichment, I can say that! I also have had a couple turn this beautiful brownish color that can look a little reddish under the light.

    I don't mind a little algae growth and as long as I keep up on weekly tank maintenance mine is largely in check. I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks - I'm hoping not to find any huge issues when I get back home.

    The aquarium looks awesome... 👍
    Regarding the Algae it might be an imbalance between NPK.
    if nitrate is 0 then you may start adding nitrogen.
    If you have nitrates, and if leaves have pinholes then it's potassium deficiency. In this case If you add potassium and start noticing nitrate reduction, then we or on the right track.
    If no pinholes then it could be phosphorus deficiency. And this likely to happen when using RO Water since there is no phosphorus.,and again if this is the cause the you will start noticing nitrate reduction.
    Another solution is as you said, to reduce the light, so the plants won't consume a lot and this narrow down the gap and imbalance on NKP, however in this case you need to do more water changes, because the plants are set to consume less and near the least nutrient amount between NPK, so the other 2 nutrients now are more than what the aquarium needs, so you need water change to get rid of the excess amount

    I started to get greenspot algae on my crypts a while back. I reduced light hours, and intensity, and cut the 'bad' leaves . Haven't had it since. So yes, less light works (this works on other algaes as well). Also, flow is important. So be careful about building the scape too tall all over the tank, as this might create deadzones i some areas - Algae likes that.

    Hornwort is brilliant at soaking up the excess nitrates and thus reducing algae. I pull half of it out every week and pit it on the garden. It's a great soil fertiliser. 😁

    I don't know if you have enough room, but wouldn't a Hillstream loach help. I've seen them and shrimp do a good job on algae. Or what about a 3 day blackout. I was always nervous about doing that.

    i got some cherry shrimp for my first tank, it had some hair algae and other algae issues. im not depending on the shrimp to fix it ,but it has made a difference from what ive seen. my java moss and one part of the tank had some bad algae and it looks cleaner after a few days. i wanna get them for my 20 gal guppy tank! i hope they can breed and repopulate but if not ill buy more for other tanks!

    I've been battling bad green hair algae, and it usually tangles up in the hornwort I used to have so I removed it. Now, at least, it's tangling up on driftwood and I can remove a ball of it every week or so. I'm going to see about your methods here and maybe solve that once and for all. I have 2 tanks with bad hair algae, but my others don't get it for whatever reason. My 8.5gal that has it bad (and then started getting black beard!) also has a lot of moss and I wondered if the moss was making it too hard to remove the visible algae since it all tangles up. I'm kind of annoyed with Moss now after being excited about growing moss when I started. It never quite 'crept' the way I was expecting based on terrestrial moss, and mostly just grows up in a tangle lol

    • @lacrosseguy108
      @lacrosseguy108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i had the same issue. i think i got the black beard algae from my java moss. i noticed the flow from the filter, the path in the tank it blows from that one patch of java moss spread some of that algae to other plants. i removed a big clump of it i had on my wood and underneath the live moss was quite a bit black beard algae. its not completely gone but ive cut off leaves and removed plants with it on it.

  • @amyhedlund9874
    @amyhedlund9874 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have advice for black beard algae? It's been my nemesis since I got rid of my stock lighting and switched to led. It's hard to pull off, and I've ended up ditching all my driftwood hardscape rather than keep trying to clean it.
