I read the completed first 2 series, half of the 3rd in Vietnamese. Great characters and martial art styles. Still very vivid in my mind after 40 years. Great series.
The more I think about it, the more the names bother me. Especially since the name "Lotus" is used to hide the fact that she is a girl, since English readers wouldn't know Huang Rong is a feminine name based on the character(according to the translator), but before it's even officially revealed that she is a girl FEMININE PRONOUNS ARE USED TO DESCRIBE LOTUS???? So what was the point of all that then...?
I am a Chinese and a loyal reader to this book. Upon my investigation, for the readers whose mother tongue is English, “Lotus” is adopted to imply that Huang Rong is a girl just like for we Chinese, “rong” is a symbol of a female name. So the author dropped a hint to us that we can be aware that Huang Rong is actually a girl but GuoJing did not know that. Because he was born in Mongolian region and little did he understand the usage of inland words. What’s more, it is a plot to sketch the main character and help readers grasp better.
@@sunbograyson8073 Yes, the translator does explain this. I know some Mandarin so I do know this. I miswrote this original comment when I said it was to "hide" the gender. I do still think Huang Rong would work just fine in English if Guo Jing still has his Chinese name. It's strange that some characters have translated names and others do not. Be consistent!! haha I still look forward to the next part!!!!!

Actually the stroke of genius boggles my mind that the author of this book, Mr Jin Yong, blended his personal name with the protagonists’ names, through which their pronunciation are similar to each other,“Jin Yong and GuoJing Huang Rong.” It is not a coincidence definitely. It is a mixture of inspiration and elaboration.❤
The name "Rong" , yes is usually used as a feminine name, but actually it is completely ok for anyone to use it. Even the main hero "GuoJing", in the book Qiu Chuji do stated that his name can be used for either boy or girl. We never have a stright rule to dictate which gender should use which words for the name. Usually the meaning behind the word is more important.
Ive only read one book which was 'The woods are dark' and it was good. But im reading this book right now an Im literally like you. I cant wait to get home to read more! Ive never had a book do that. Maybe ive been trying to read the wrong books. But 🤌
