You are a very good teacher. I like how you always take the time to cover the details, no matter how small, even after having done so in so many other videos. Thank you for that.
The best part about learning from these 'old' videos is the information never gets old! .... I watch every one that pops up on here. Thanks, Corp. Kelly, for a wealth of timeless knowledge that will not ever get stale! As I watch, late Sept. 2024, TH-cam says this one is 8 years old, but the content is fresh as a daisy. .... Salute!
I am sure it was said elsewhere, but I will repeat. This was one of the clearest, most concise and complete videos on a bushcraft topic without a lot of excess verbiage. Well done, Shawn.
I'm an avid out doorsman and I've done everything in this video countless times but there is no way I could ever make an instructional video of this caliber. You're a gifted instructor. This video was extremely well done.
Corporal, that was outstanding. Because of your relentless teaching and practical methods I am becoming better equipped to be an asset to my family and others when it matters most, in addition to the casual family outings. Thank you sir!
Thank you for helping me learn how to tie knots. I'm a visual learner and because of this video I can watch as many times as needed to learn these knots. Along with your other knot videos I can finally not only learn the knots but know which knots when. Thank you so much.
cloths dryer died in winter. used bowline and truckers hitch to make a temp cloths line in my back room with a space heater. Some folks like other knots, I know, but for me, needing the tension to stay, these knots work. Only having one hand that works the prusik is a God send. A prusik over a prusik, that is new. Like it.
Not a big fan of this particular tarp set up. However that was one of the best video productions for demonstrating a tarp method that I've seen. Extremely well done. Thanks.
I was taught a similar method many years ago in summer camp, but instead of gorilla tape to join the 2 tarps, we used rocks and bits of twine. Overlap the 2 tarps, place a small rock on the overlap and form a "pocket" around the rock with both tarps, then tie a small bit of cord around the rock-containing-pocket (the rock goes on one side of the two tarps, the twine on the other side.) This technique can also be used to fix lines for staking if whatever you're using as a shelter doesn't have grommets.
I'm not a survivalist, but I saw in other videos on YT that you can put the rope through the loop in the trucker's hitch TWICE, and it will auto-hold the tension, instead of pinching the knot to hold it. I have tried that today while camping and it worked like a charm.
You are one of the few video producers that I go back to and watch over again many times. All of your videos are easy to follow and very informative. You are a good teacher.I'm pretty much just a hobbyist when it comes to bush craft/survival but I've learned a lot from your videos.I practice what you've shown until I get it right.Since I don't get to put it to use as much as I would like to I re-watch your videos and make sure I still get it right.Thanks.
Great tutorial, Corporal! This is actually a nice set up for those who are weight conscious. The two survival blankets often weigh less than a full size tarp of the collective dimensions. For example my MARPAT tarp weighs almost 4 pounds whereas two of my orange reflective blankets total less than 3 pounds. It was great, too, that you took the time in showing each of the knots involved, how to tie and deploy them.
I love your succinct videos. Short, sweet, and packed full of killer, practical, and highly functional tips and tricks. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.
Yes sir I use those same knots all the time. Now that was something. Those two tarps look like the ones I have pretty tough tarps. I don't sleep on the ground any more but it don't hurt to keep things like this in mind. I think I will do this and for sure pass it on. Those tarps don't weigh nothing. Thank you very much.
I don’t understand why you would want to use 2 tarps but the video was amazing. Just straight to the dame point. Every TH-cam instructional video can learn how to do instructional videos from this video. Great job
Bloody glad I watched some of your vids before wild camping with my young kids last weekend with a new tarp. The weather did all the the things it can do in October but with our ridge line high and tight we didn’t feel a drop. My son woke up and laughed at the weather shouting,”Do your worst!”
Holy.....wow! The Best rope/knot (s), purposeful instruction I've seen. Dito on all the other positive comments! Thank you for sharing your talents. You've got and skills for clean, simplifying training.
Give you a thumbs up. I know nothing about the outdoors. But watching you do this I imagine you have done it so many times it like tieing your shoe laces now. Top marks.
Good knowledge of knots. Of course, I'd probably just curl up between the tarps or just inside one of 'em, doubled-up, with a debris-pile bed and maybe covered in debris. Depends on the creepy-crawly situation.
Good video, but a bit complicated. In the Marines we spent many nights at Lejeune, Norway, and Central America in simple poncho/tentsheet hooches. Ridgeline and four guy outs. Used a stick and a loop on the endpoints of the ridgeline. I'd find/ cut a stick to make the doorway a few inches higher.
great job in this video I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to bushcraft and backpacking but its something that im learning to enjoy so this was very informative and informational for me and ive been watching dozens of videos lately on this stuff so kudos and thank !!
That's some badass outro music. Seemed like more of a knot tutorial (joke), but convinced me to buy some paracord and finally learn knot techniques. Thanks for the tutorial!
Hey brother, Semper Fi. I enjoy your channel. Was an Army SSG myself, that's the type hooch I always strung up. Used 3 ponchos snapped together with the hoods tied off outside. Kept a dozen bungee cords on my ruck frame. A few tent stakes in the topic flap. Had shelter in 5 min. Great job, carry on.
Every video with knots, knot cards, and even in person instruction, cannot seem to keep their fat fingers out of the way for the learner to learn something. You however, did excellent! You have strong leadership and instructional skills. Thank you, Sir!
Real nice video with excellent clear instruction of knot making and technique. Good colour choice too with the orange paracord. I use a figure eight and a truckers for my ridgelines but the bowline is also an equally great choice. Regards from New Zealand.
dude, out-freaking-standing! That was professional as hell, brother! I do believe I hear someone who's been through NCO school "train the trainer" course - "1) Tell them what you're going to teach; 2) Teach them; 3) Tell them what you taught them,"- almost hearing "Task, Conditions, Standards"! ROFL. I instantly subscribed just because of the quality of instruction- not to mention the topics... simple as this, why would I reinvent the wheel- no need to do a video or class when you've done such a superb job... I may even take snippets like when you (double show) knots, etc for other classes I teach... or when I am teaching younger /future NCOs how to teach a class- regardless of topic. Thanks!
Grommets will not hold up to super windy conditions. I destroyed two tarps because of trusting them. Thanks Shawn for all your videos. They are very helpful
Thank you again, Corporal ! Always dreamed to have an uncle like you, instead of one telling me not to go wild camp because I could get killed, haha ! God Bless you !

Great demonstration of rope work and I learnt from this. I guess the limitations based on Marine issue (?) tarps was the reason behind this otherwise why not get a larger tarp.
Clear and concise. Just what I would expect from a leatherneck. My experience with cordage is, IT'S SLIPPERY! For the truckers hitch I run two passes through the ridge line loop, that seems to help hold it a bit better. And great tip about singeing the ends of paracord, otherwise it just comes all undone. A lot of folks new to this stuff don't know that. One last thing, please try to equalize the volume of voice with the ending music. I had to crank up the volume to hear you clearly but then the music about blew my speakers out.!

❤this was the best instructions I have ever seen as far as set up of a ridgeline and tarps using all the various knots.🎉
The most clear demonstration of knot tying I've seen. Great job Marine, carry on.
Finally a sensible video well appreciated by beginners,,,,Big Thanks Corporal Corner!
Thank you for helping me learn how to tie knots. I'm a visual learner and because of this video I can watch as many times as needed to learn these knots. Along with your other knot videos I can finally not only learn the knots but know which knots when. Thank you so much.
one of the best videos on knots and shelter making. outstanding!!
Six years after it was first posted, it shows up in my notifications. This is a good one!

What would you do having two tarps and need a shelter the size of those two tarps?
This reminds me of the Army (and probably Marine) shelter halves, where each soldier carried one and joined together they made a tent similar to this.
I was taught a similar method many years ago in summer camp, but instead of gorilla tape to join the 2 tarps, we used rocks and bits of twine. Overlap the 2 tarps, place a small rock on the overlap and form a "pocket" around the rock with both tarps, then tie a small bit of cord around the rock-containing-pocket (the rock goes on one side of the two tarps, the twine on the other side.) Very instructive with no BS. Cadre class presentation. Bravo. & thanx
Thank you for the extra time taken in demonstrating the knots, as someone who's just starting out I found that invaluable.
I like the knots that you can cinch up under tension. I save these videos and re-visit them, hoping something will stick.
Very nice. Instructive with clear, step by step explanations.
I love your succinct videos. Short, sweet, and packed full of killer, practical, and highly functional tips and tricks. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.
These older vids are still awesome and what got me hooked on this channel , thank you mr Kelly
Clear, concise and the best tutorial I've seen on this topic. Thanks for sharing.
Great real life in the field knot video! Thanks Corp!
I love how you show the knots in such detail. It makes it all easy to understand.
+James Ritchie Knowledge is power, thanks for watching

The knot knowledge alone is invaluable.
Watch my other cordage videos and thanks for watching
Mind blown AF @ 8:00 when the two tarps are attached to the truckers hitch. Definitely going to set a large and small tent like this at my place.
Extremely well done! Thanks, John
I don’t understand why you would want to use 2 tarps but the video was amazing. Just straight to the dame point. Every TH-cam instructional video can learn how to do instructional videos from this video. Great job
To the point, clear..very informative..precise directive...Oohorah.!!👍💪
I've watched several of your videos to master the knots. They are easy to follow, even for a left-hander who has to reverse everything.
Aaaaah yes, the grizzly snack shelter..complete with floss. Nice knots, good presentation...will definitely have to save this...for a future snack.
I watched this vid many times to follow the instructions. Good
That was an excellent job of "SPLAININ,'" probably the best I've seen on youtube!!!
Excellent instruction, clear, concise and straight forward.
As a person that has a hard time understand things you are an awesome teacher
Excellent instructional video . Must practice those knots.
Another outstanding episode, unreal, the most positive thing going on in the world at present, still enjoying my time in the forests
Thank you for all the knowledge you share with us!!! God bless!!
Great Video Brother! 25 years as a Firefighter and still learning things! That Truckers Hitch is Cool!
Thank you for the very clear knot instructions. Most helpful.

Great instructor. Great camera angles. Great review of covered principles at the end. Thanks for all of the above.

Thanks again. Can’t wait for the online classes to start up
Good dexterity made this such a good instructional video 👍
Well done never get tired of watching this kind of thing
Thank you, Corporal. This lesson is useful!

definitely easier to learn knots when there's a use for them! Thanks!
+Torrey Jones Exactly, thanks for the comments
It's always a learning experience watching your videos. We'll done sir.
Prusik knot has got to be one of my favorite.
That was fascinating, l don't do camping but l so enjoy your channel. 😊😊😊😊🐱🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Probably the best trucker's hitch IRL how-to I've ever seen. Hat tip to you sir!
Good knowledge of knots. Of course, I'd probably just curl up between the tarps or just inside one of 'em, doubled-up, with a debris-pile bed and maybe covered in debris. Depends on the creepy-crawly situation.
Excellent work. This will be great with a couple of those Walmart backpacker tarps like you put in your bottle kit!
I cannot believe I am just finding this channel now. No BS Corps instruction at its finest!
Please share my channel with others so that it can grow and thanks for watching
Very well done! The explanations were clear and detailed.

Grommets will not hold up to super windy conditions. I destroyed two tarps because of trusting them. Thanks Shawn for all your videos. They are very helpful
Maybe you were just too ambitious in above-ground construction under the given conditions.
Super instructive and useful knowledge. Kind regards from Chile.
Thank you again, Corporal !
Always dreamed to have an uncle like you, instead of one telling me not to go wild camp because I could get killed, haha !

Thanks a lot been looking for a video on this for awhile. Easyer than I thought.
Excellent teaching of knots.
Right on, kicking ass and taken names. Right on. 👍🏽👍🏼👍🏿👍🏻
This is great because I have 2 of those exact same emergency tarps and was looking for a way to make a shelter to fit two people. thanks!

From one Corporal to another, Semper Fi.
I subbed at the truckers hitch toggle. Great instructional video, I've set up a tarp many times, but you taught me a couple new tricks...thanks
Tarps very versitle and modern ones ultra light, I have a few, largest being a recent 4m x 3m purchase, which give many options, great video.
very well done. Nice instruction.
Outstanding! Thank you, Sir
You know I really enjoy your videos I just stumbled upon them by accident. I am currently bicycle touring in Ohio cycled down to Cincinnati. I'm making my way back. All my best to you, hope you're enjoying your summer. You do a nice job with your knot demonstrations as well.
that is how TH-cam likes to keep my channel, so people accidently stumble across it. But thanks for checking it out and for watching

Clear and concise. Just what I would expect from a leatherneck.
