Realize that most people do not have a salt or iodine literate physician. There's no physician in my area that fits that bill by any stretch of the imagination. I would imagine that goes true for most of the population. So for those of us who don't have a physician literate in iodine or salt as a resource, I guess we're going to have to Wing it.

Great discussion! I totally agree that the best patients are those who make a point of educating themselves. There's so much misinformation about nutrition that it is a disgrace. They touched on the reason why and I believe more people are recognizing that money is running our healthcare system not the quality of our health.
I started out as a registered dietitian in 1982 and eventually went into private practice because I felt the standards of practice were very often not helping people get better. The only exception would be the people with kidney disease. Eventually I went back to grad school and became a licensed psychotherapist because I felt that nutrition problems we're very psychologically influenced and I wasn't trained to go down that road. The combination of the two is fantastic.
I greatly appreciate Dr. Brownstein and all of the open minded docs who interview him. His message is based in science as well as decades of experience. As he has said, he's not treating paper he's treating people. He was referring to labwork alone driving treatment. If a person is obviously improving and they have strange lab work, how they feel and function should always be a major consideration! Don't expect your conventional doctor to agree with that.

I would like to know what Dr. Brownstein thinks about the theory that pharmaceutical companies are adding products/compounds/chemicals that can cause both old and new diseases. Not only in prescription drugs, but OTC drugs, and vaccines as well. Also, does he think genetically modified foods play a role in contracting/creating illnesses and/or in the vast number of diseases we see today? (Example: Autism)

I have heard the same thing about Dr. Berg being accused by his son (for l am not sure what exactly). But as someone who was treated by Dr. Berg in his office here in Falls Church, VA for years, and as someone who has personally referred well over a hundred people over a decade (most of whom were greatly helped through his service), l would caution what you are saying or implying here. If you are to meet actual (physical) Dr. Berg patients (not the thousands he's now helping online), you will be hard to find one who doesn't sing his praises. A lot of the information he has been trying to pass on to his patients has been corroborated or is being corroborated just now by other doctors (though he has been saying it for 20 years). That he is a Scientologist or how much money he gave to his church is of no concern to me. Judge the man on the information he is giving you and how well that works for you. Though he is a Chiroproctor, I believe he is one of the most important holistic nutritionist in the US and one who has helped a lot of people (that l personally know). I don't need to say this but I happened to come across this comment and l was just not going to pass it without responding to it. You are welcome to contact me privately if you have a question.

Iodine wakes up your thyroid. If you get discomfort, it’s because your thyroid is inflamed even before taking iodine. Certain foods, a lack of magnesium, selenium, inflammatory foods (soy, wheat, milk), little sleep, excessive stress, etc. all contribute to that.
Stop iodine and address those things first if you get that discomfort.

Many salts are very high in sodium and don’t contain enough other electrolytes to balance the fluid in the body. There is a Pink Potassium salt that is
lpw sodium and high potassium which would be a healthier balance. Also, Some foods like potatoes, spinach, chard, collards, seeds, nuts and grains contain Oxalic acid (oxalate). Oxalates are notorious for disrupting disrupting electrolyte balance in the body. When a person is low on magnesium or calcium, the Oxalic acid turns to Oxalate crystals in the body and cause congestion. Salts are not only sodium but also potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride are also salts.

My restless leg syndrome was caused by coffee and caramel, not by a salt insufficiency.

Coffee and sugar causes vascular dehydration which leads to cramping and neuropathy. Salt helps bring and hold more fluid into the vascular system. Coffee is a diuretic which in-turn depleats salts in the body.

If coffee has caffeine, it is a diuretic which washes sodium out of the body. Also, carbohydrates (sugar) require salt to be processed by the body. Or on the 2nd part, I may be wrong. I know the first part is correct. I just know that when I've consumed a lot of sweet stuff in the past, I then have the need for something salty to make myself feel better.

Thank you 😊 for being honest! That's so helpful for the doctor to figure out what's really going on in your body!

Why don't we compare your references to all the references in the 16 books Dr. Brownstein has written. Conventional medicine doesn't want integrative medicine to interfere with its profits. That has been an ongoing reality for a very long time.
I've been a dietitian since 1982 and progressed to becoming an integrative dietitian with a ton of physiological chemistry to back what I know, and I haven't heard either of these doctors say anything that doesn't match up to science.

@@miriamlandau1207 My references are from Dr Klaper, Dr N Barnard, Dr C Campbell, Dr Esseltyn, etc.... Not saying no salt is needed, just very small amount unless you are an athlete and sweat a lot. So much salt in ultra processed food is so detrimental. Refined salt is a killer, I only use unrefined sea salt sparsely. Greetings from France
