@thespectaclefactory Thank you again, I can't wait! They'll see plenty of use when I hit the trails. Also can't wait to work on my next frame with you! Thanks for bringing this idea to life
Another informative video. I had the pleasure of visiting the Spectacle Factory this week and ordered two pairs of glasses with Robert’s help. Absolutely amazing experience and can’t wait to receive my new glasses and sunglasses. Amazing staff and the whole experience was incredible. From the eye test using advanced Zeiss equipment to the whole process of choosing the frames the lenses the coatings everything.
Fantastic specs Robert! Those glass lenses are truly incredible. I love jobs like this. I did one just this week where I worked with a couple of DO's for a lady who was around -20.00 combined but also with 4.00 base out prism. I used this rolled edge technique you mentioned using the same Mainline hand edger you featured in your video. 😂
Greetings Robert! Another great informative video. I've had heavy prescription eyeglasses most of my life, starting as a teen. My lenses gave me a thinner profile in recent years. However, I still have some overhang as you call it. This video is encouraging to me because it is great to know that I can have eyeglasses that look great even with a challenging Rx. Thanks and cheers! 🍻
Another great video! Frame choice as you said is equally as important. I’m a -4.50 and the frames I got from yourselves with the lenses paired just right. Thing it’s time for more 😄
amazing frames, amazing lenses. These reijkjavik frames with this tint look georgeous. Would this tint work also for inside, working in front of a computer screen ?
I got JF Rey frames with Zeiss glass lense because my prescription was not great. The results are amazing. Good looks with high functionality. Highly recommend glass lenses.
Getting someone to do a good finishing is important - I'm a -8.5 sphere. The best specs I had were from a sadly now defunct Scottish chain about 20 years ago with 1.74 plastic in Nike Flexon frames, people commented how less chunky they looked. Recently returned to Zeiss 1.74 in a Flexon frame similar to that one and it the result is not as good IMHO.
its important to note that in some countries, like in Canada, glass lenses will become illegal due to safety issues. Having an airbag go off while you're wearing glasses made out of glass can result in blindness and other injuries. I just learned that as Im in the process right now of picking up my first pair of glasses.
Hi Chris, I don't believe that it is the case that they will become illegal. That's just what opticians say who don't like to work with glass. Do you know how many recorded cases there are of vision impairment as a result of prescription glass lenses? I have only heard of one occasion when it happened during my 12+ years doing this job - and that was a pair of non-prescription Ray-Bans about a year ago.
@@thespectaclefactory thanks for that information, in the middle of getting my first pair of glasses so just learning about it. Granted, it also might be my last pair as Im also told im going blind...so yeah... but thanks again.
It does indeed but it won't be uniform thickness. It'll only be in certain places on the lens. This is shown by the axis which is part of your prescription. For example a -1.00 astigmatism at 90° would give you thickness at the temple and nasal side of the lens. At 180° it would give you thickness at the top and bottom.
Hi Robert, we have a robust process for doing this. We require photos of yourself from the front and sides, and we also need to know the sizing of your current glasses. This gives us a scale of reference. Using that information, we can calculate exactly how the new glasses should fit you, as well as the lens positioning.
this video is brilliant . I have -7.5 in both eyes just bought new glasses , paying for them to be thinned out as much as possible ! I don’t like how thick they are on the bottom edge . I wish i new this before purchasing , I was not given advise either when trying on . In the future i will try to look away from high street opticians, guess I am stuck for the next 2 years as I do not want to pay out a lot of money again. so frustrating
Great video! I was wondering what are some key factors when it comes to reducing the "minification" effect in minus-power lenses? Despite the high index, my new glasses are noticeably reducing the size of my laptop screen. Aspheric lenses can help? Thank you, keep the content coming!
I have a very strong prescription. I hate that my eyes look so tiny through the thick lenses. I heard that you said that there still will be a minification of the eyes with your thinner glass lenses. My question is: with the thinner glass lenses you make is there less minification than with the traditional thick lenses. Will my eyes not look so small like they do now wearing the traditional thick lenses? Thank you. I really enjoyed your video!!
I have -7 perscription and I can not wear my glasses all day because i have extreme eye strain while doing so. I think i need higher quality glass lenses. My Optometrist in the USA is not helpful in that he is unable to order anything other than high index plastic. Can I order glass lenses from you?
I have heard that very high index -- 1.74 and above introduces chromatic aberrations into the vision because of how much they bend the light. Is this true? Is this an issue?
They both have their advantages and disadvantages. If it's for 'best' go with glass and for daily wear you might prefer plastic. Hope you're considering ordering them through us
I've been told you can't have the thinnest possible with rimless glasses (around -5 w/ astigmatism), so my pair of rimless were very thick, is it possible to get rimless lenses very thin with plastic lenses and apply rolling and/or faceting etc? Thanks!
Yes, that's all possible, and your prescription is very much do-able (I just finished working on a -7 yesterday) - email us via hello@thespectaclefactory.com
You've got to be careful with the rolled edge. If it is exaggerated, then it will create a white outline all around the perimeter of the lens. When it comes to lens thickness, frame selection is king. Always listen to the optician's advice. He or she will know which are the best frames for you.
I agree about the rolled edge, but if done properly you get a result like this. I disagree about listening to your optician. Most don't really know what they're doing. Obviously, if you find one that does then absolutely.
@thespectaclefactory Sadly, I think you are right about the quality of most opticians. I have seen so many horribly fitted and horribly made eyeglasses.
Ok Robert I probably have the worst case you have ever seen. Is there an e-mail I can contact your company at? I wanted to order some glasses through you guys but had some questions. Let me know please. DW
Here's a odd question... My prescription isn't bad. Left eye -2.75 and right eye -1.75, but should I get thin lens to avoid one eye looking smaller than the other?
Just want to say index 1.74 plastic is not the thinnest material in the world. A company called Tokai from Japan offers index 1.76 DAS lens which is very good quality lens.
O wow. Show some glasses made with -12 in each eye. Thats what i have. I dont like getting new glasses, because i cant find frames that look good, that dont look too small for my face....also doesnt glass weigh more than plastic?

@thespectaclefactory Granted, but at 1.6 on par with polycarbonate (headache inducing) or trivex. I've had issues with chromatic aberations in high index plastics. Another question might be: Are any of your customers sensitive to materials with relatively low abbe values? Any chromatic aberation bothers me. Maybe I'm special! LOL Those lenses at -9 look incredible. 👍
@@akahinaI am glad that you brought up the drawback of low ABBE values with high index materials. Another drawback of high index is an increase in glare. Tradeoffs need to be understood.
The two go hand in hand, kind of. But ultimately, the power of the lens is what causes the effect. A simple trick is to find frames which fit close to the eye. That's why contacts don't cause the same distortion
thinnest lenses the client ever gonna get at -9 but also gonna be the heaviest😂 no way he's gonna be able to wear that all day comfortably. 10% thinner than plastic but double the weight is a terrible tradeoff. this channel is focused too much on aesthetics instead of practicality.
