    Great video. I've been spoiled by my optician when I was a kid, he was a true artisan with 50 years of experience in his field and every pair of glasses was hand adjusted to perfection. I really struggled to find a good optician in the last decade until recently.

    In my lab I just glazed the highest rx I've ever seen.
    -29.25 which we used a 1.74 blended lenticular for. The results were incredible. So I appreciate that you mentioned bevel position and hand finishing the chamfer because they make a huge difference in the cosmetics.

    Robert, I found your channel a few weeks ago and really have enjoyed watching almost every video you have made over the past couple of years.
    This one by far was my biggest Ahah moment. I wore contacts for 30 years then as I aged I made the move to glasses 11 years ago. Not sure why but I have always been drawn to rectangle shaped glasses and as a result have not liked how thick my glasses look. My prescription is -7.5 ish and now I watched this video and understand why.
    Thank you for what you do, education today is so very important. In a world of do it yourself and take no responsibility for anything I for one appreciate you!
    I really want to set up a consulting appointment with you, I am just a little apprehensive about can I truly get my perfect pair of glasses via a video conference? I know technology has come along way but that is my only hesitation. But watching you gives me the confidence to try.
    Thanks again, Brett

    I’m in near tears because I’ve been struggling to find a good eye dr and GOOD opticians who know what they’re doing when it comes to difficult prescriptions and are the literal opposite of the philosophy you stated at 5:44. I have a very high Rx and this WHOLE YEAR, I’ve been trying to get glasses that work because I’ve developed strabismus in my left eye and it’s due to the lens not being right time and time again and it’s slowly getting worse. To the point where I can’t drive with a patch over my left eye.
    I wish you were in my town. 😢
    You actually understand how the shapes and materials matter and how they interact and affect each other. That means there has to be others who can help me. I hope I can find them.

Sadly, I am from India and I might not be able to afford the charges of a spectacle from your store with all the different charges. I was fascinated by this video. In 40+ years of buying glasses I don’t think I’ve ever been told the relationship between thickness and shape. I’d love to see a video on shape of glasses to face shape (forgive me if you’ve already done one, if so please point me to it). I’ve always felt circular/rounded frames do not suit me but even with a high prescription (-12 left eye and -18 in right due to keratoconus but that’s usually matched to left prescription) I’ve always gone for more rectangular. Maybe I need to go with the rounded shape now?

  • @ernestworthinggood
    @ernestworthinggood ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hi Robert, I’ve just been recently looking for contents on lenses and you, my favourite channel for eyewear, upload another BANGER video about it 😆😆 Thank you so much!
    However there’s still something about lenses that bugs me a lot : the distorted images of facial features through lenses with higher prescriptions ( e.g. sph:-650 and cyl:150) . I notice that the lenses you wear in the videos always produce a smooth, natural face contour. May I know if your lenses are of lower power or correction-free?
    I understand that double aspheric lenses can help address this distortion rather effectively…will 1.76 DAS from Tokai or an average 1.74 DAS from any brand perform better than a 1.9 glass lens, or even premium options like Zeiss 1.74 ClearView/ Superb/ SmartLife?And would a higher refraction index, thinner lens finishing, and edge polishing also help🤔?
    I reckon that frame size and shape also matter. Yet smaller frames and circular shapes may produce quite a compromising look on some people🥲🥲. I wondered if bridge length, vertex distance, and lens tilt should also be taken into consideration as well.
    There is very little information on addressing lens distortion on the internet, whether on webs or TH-cam channels . I believe this is a crucial issue on the aesthetics of a pair of glasses, as it can significantly impact a person's physiognomy. If possible, could you consider discussing this topic in a video? It would greatly benefit many fellow bespectacled netizens and help us make better choices.

      @@santiagogladin5651 Umm I learn that double aspheric lens was designed decades ago to address this issue, but it's an old technology... and Superb --released just years ago --is advertised as a sideshow on Zeiss's own web, that it can mitigate the effect of minification, though to what extent I know not, as one cannot find any photos or videos at all comparing the two online... And some opticians tell me that both Smartlife and Clearview would have very little effect on this, as their main appeal is the visual quality, while some say they do better than DAS...

      The same rules don't apply! What is important is to NOT have the "B" (lens height) too small. A MINIMUM of 40mm should be used. "Low" lenses cause the varifocal transition to be "crowded" in the lens causing more distortion & narrower "corridor".

    Hey Robert, I am currently an optician apprentice (nearly done) and your videos really taught me a lot. Ever since I found them you really became my role model in terms of presentation, style and knowledge.
    Thank you for that!
    I have a question about glass lenses that you mentioned in this video. Where I work we usually try to avoid glass material, not because of the extra work but because of the weight and safety issues it might lead to for the customer if they break due to an accident for example. I agree that they are often put in a negative light so I was wondering if you could give me your take on this. Always trying to learn from different sources.
    I really appreciate what you do!

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's frustrating, because maybe you should try TELLING the customer about that and let them decide, rather than just making the choice for them. Many people want the thinnest possible lenses and will tolerate the weight to achieve that.
      There are extremely few recorded cases of a glass lens causing injury, Ask your colleagues if they have ever experienced this situation. It's a myth!
      Anyway, thank you so much for the support, and I hope to keep inspiring you!

      The only drawback to glass lenses is the weight, I have an old pair metal aviator style glasses [mid 90s] 54x45mm lens, metal frames which weigh 51 grams, my present glasses 52 x 35mm metal frames weigh 25 grams

    So one question. Doesn’t CR39 material also give a thin lense? Doesn’t it also have a good refractive index and high abbe value like glass? If the manufacturers all use the same material, as a consumer, why should I chose Zeiss over Rodenstock? This is my question. Btw great work on the glass material and you are right, in my prt of the world (Middle east) opticians want to do the least work so recommend what can be quickly done with a good margin than recommend according to the customer. Thanks. Do explain more about the different types of material like Polycarbonate, Trivex , CR39 etc

    Hi, I just have a question if it could be answered I would really appreciate it.
    My prescription is:
    R) -7.00/-2.50x160
    L) -7.00/-2.00x140
    With a +2.50 add R and L eye. I wear varifocals.
    I wanted to know if I got 1.74 index Zeiss lenses with Reykjavik frames would it look ok. Because the lenses I wear currently are just standard varifocal glasses and are pretty thick

I apprentice passion to help as the eye glasses industry has been over taken by the fashion industry and no longer caters to individuals with real problems. My own prescription is very high, -23 and -25 and I've not been able to get my glasses looking as aesthetically pleasing as you have despite using high index 1.74. I'll check your website out but in the interim do you guys have any associate in the US?

    Hi Robert, I've just got single vision glasses 3 days ago (sphere -2.0 and cylinder -0.5 in both eyes), and this is the first time I've worn glasses (I've never worn contact lenses either). I understand that I need to take time to adjust to glasses, however I'm struggling with chromatic aberration where I'm seeing blue and yellow outlines on objects that aren't in my direct line of vision both horizontally and vertically. Even looking down at my phone through the bottom of my glasses is hard. I've read that the type of lens material can reduce this due to the ABBE number. I'm not sure what material I currently have as I was never asked by the opticians to choose a material, I was only asked to pick a frame. The frame I chose is similar to a classic rayban sunglasses frame. What ABBE value or lens material would you recommend for me to minimise or get rid of the chromatic aberration? Thank you in advance if you answer this.

    Thank you for this video. I'm not sure if it warrants another video, but I am interested to know what you do to help prevent the lens edge from looking "white" inside a frame. My prescription is only -2.00, and some labs seem better than others at tackling this issue. For example, I have heard some labs polish the edges in order to make the edges look less white (with one downside being reflections for the eyeglass wearer)?

    Hi, I just got my glasses with Flair rimless frame and Photofusion X Pioneer with Jade Duravision Flash and I love them, they look really beautiful. But I have a very big problem. I am seeing so much glare, it's driving me crazy. The glare is really bad; I have the feeling my glasses are not clean even though they are perfectly clean. I did them in Zeiss shop in Germany. I don't know if it is normal or what could be wrong with me or the glasses. Also, my eyes are a little bit red and tired. Please help me with an answer. Is it normal???? Should I just get used to them?????

    • @AR-zp1fx
      @AR-zp1fx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that if it's your first time wearing glasses you will pass through an initial period of adjustment to the glasses ... During which you may experience red eyes, itchy eyes blurry vision, even fuzzy and commonly headache .... It might take 2 or 3 days or rarely up to 2 weeks ...you just need to wear your prescription glasses as long as possible to get used to it... However if you experience these symptoms more than two weeks then probably your prescription is wrong and you need to recheck....the most important thing is when you firstly put your glasss on ; you feel like contrast is better , details are clearer as if you switched vision from 360p to full HD+ 😂 !!! I hope this helps and enjoy your new glasses ❤🌷

    • @danielmcgravie2929
      @danielmcgravie2929 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair for the glare problem it might be the jade flash. A mirror is by definition reflective. They look cool but the diamond flash on mine is very reflective. Luckily I've got multiple pairs so I just wear the mirror ones for fashion.
      An anti reflective coating is pretty standard on glasses but you've got essentially a pro reflective coating, so you will experience more reflections bouncing off the glass, and a knock-on effect is glare. Is it still the same when they darken with the photofusion? Only mention because mines are usually better once the tint has darkened.
      Also, I will just say I don't work for spectacle factory I just work in optics. I may be wrong but this reminds me of my experience with flash mirrors in clear glasses.

    • @enpianisti
      @enpianisti ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielmcgravie2929 Thank you for your answer, but I am a little disappointed, cause no one mentions the glare problem with the flash. I only hope that I get used to them with time because otherwise it would be crazy. I spent more than 1000 Euros on my glasses (for me is a lot) and it's crazy that I am not completely satisfied with them. As I said I only hope I get used to them. I am so sad.

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With flash coatings, the pantoscopic tilt and bow angle are crucial to reducing the angle of reflectance between the lenses and your eyes. It's really important that these are adjusted properly.
      I would encourage you to let your optician know and they should have the skill to modify the frame positioning and lens orientation to significantly reduce the reflections.
      And, as others have said, the brain is an amazing thing which will surely get used to the new glasses, as long as you stop worrying.

    • @bbk452
      @bbk452 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@enpianistiJust FYI - i had two pairs with mirror coating - top two brands on the market. They were tiring my eyes so much then after 2-3 months I just give up and replaced them with normal Photochromic lens. No way to go back. Unfortunately the reflection between the glass and the eye is unbearable- maybe for some events but for daily use - nope.

    Hi, My wife has been prescribed glasses sph (right = R) and (left=L) R +3.50 L +3.75, cyli R= -4.25 and -4.25, axis R=16 and L=173, she can see things a lot better in shorter distance without being headache or dizy but she can not read cars number plate (she was ok up to 17 meter but you have read it at 20 meter apparently). So We have visited a different optician without mentioning the glasses who has now prescribed sph R=+4, L=4.50; cyl R=-4.25, L-5.25; axix R=13, L=165 and they have advised us to go for 50% thinner lenses and £60 extra for adjusting the lenses to help with her astigmatism, quoting £290 plus the frame cost (I think).
    Can someone please advise A) why there is a difference in numbers between the 2 prescriptions B) high price C) if the new frame would enable her to see the number plates and get her driving licence which is very important to her? Thank you

    • @thespectaclefactory
      @thespectaclefactory  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A) Standard eye tests are subjective, so the results depends on the answers your wife gives (ours uses more objective data, hence why many people travel to us for a 25x more accurate test).
      B) To achieve the best vision possible, there are much more advanced lenses that would be more expensive than £290. Her prescription is very complex and so the lenses should be a priority in your purchase. Ask about what lens technology she is getting for the money.
      C) No one can answer this who has not examined her eyes. Either of the opticians who have seen her should be able to tell you this.
