How is he tragic? he had everything anyone would wish and he is still chasing for happiness somewhere outside himself. his appetite for being admired and loved is unsatiable. this character is even more evil than the joker? the actor is fantastic, but people like homelander do exist among us and i have no respect for any of them.
I'm just watching any homelander tributes and imo this is one of (if not) the best homelander tribute. I love how you've used the song and told his pov. Also, i didn't know it was you, but given how it is edited I should've guess as soon as I finished watching. I love your Joker edit, I sometines search it just to rewatch it again and again. Guess i'll be rewatching something new along with it now. Lastly, I enjoyed reading your essay (the word doc), it's nice to know others also care about his character, love me some villain characters, especially the complex ones who show very human flaws that we can relate to. Anyways, I love this edit, truly.💙
It always makes me happy to hear when villain lovers find their way back to my videos even when it's for different characters! I empathize with Homelander and his story a ton and it really makes my day when I hear that there are others out there who understand. Thank you so much❤️
That means so much to hear, thank you! Totally agree, they did a fantastic job with him! The comics were so lackluster, it's amazing how much depth they gave him on the show
As you listen to this song, I think it can help represent and paint a picture of how the Season has progressed over the series... 0:00 - 1:16: (S1) Represents the first we see of Homelander with the build up in tension from the start to the end of this point. Where his true self begins to fold back, and just as we see him for what he truly is, it all fold back behind the mask of a "hero" 1:17 - 1:46: (S2) Tension begins to rise quicker. New beats appear, new yet familiar to before. The song starts to amp up as it is about to hit a peak, that isn't matched until later in the song (show). 1:47 - 2:11: (S3) Tension hits it's height. Chaos begins to break loose, as beats (like forces) collide. Causing a big climax before slowing back down. 2:12 - 2:44: (S4) Acts as a Calm Before the storm. Like Season 4. The beat begins to pick up again, getting more tense just as the chaos begins to unfold. Before it goes further than it has every gone before. 2:45 - 3:50: (S5) Everything breaks loose. The beats louder, more impactful, and more chaotic. Full. Out. Chaos. Like Homelander says: "No more rules." (just like how The Boys S5 should be...) You may not have intentionally edited this video like this. But to me, apart from being a stellar piece of art, that is beautifully edited, it also speaks a story behind how it is presented. The song choice, and how well the song cresceno's, the beats, and everything is just perfect. Perfect, everything down to the last minute details... Truly a piece of art.
Thank you SO much for this comment, it really made my day. It wasn't the intention but I can absolutely see it work that way! I'm always happy to see comments with different interpretations. The whole video is definitely a reflection of his mental state, which is both declining and in some aspects becoming oddly reflective and self-aware, that's the middle part before 3:50. I had the part from 2:12 up until 2:45 placed earlier in the video during one of my first drafts but then thought nope, that are his current thoughts and emotions that will cause the destruction his downward spiral is leading to. Season 4 was him evaluating his own emotions because of his midlife crisis and lack of purpose, he "dealt" with his past (in his way) and he's ready for the point of no return which is his future.
What an incredible edit, as always, Alana! I love how you showcased the trauma and complexity of Homelander, and the song of choice is awesome. I've never heard this version of Dream On and i like it
Thank you so much Boonky, I appreciate that a lot! There was a version similar to this one in the trailer for "The Creator" and I immediately had to pull out my notes app in the cinema so I wouldn't forget it, haha.
Man, your work is always ones where I don't even know where to start praising cause man every second of this is perfect....Perfect! There's ALOT of moments that gave me chills in this! 2:35 to 2:50 is an example with the way you had the visuals match up perfectly to what Homelander was saying to the way it was built up with the music until it pauses and comes back to violence after Homelander says, "No more rules." Absoulety amazing! I can write an essay long comment about all the clean and cleverly cut moments in this lol. But overall, your work is stunning! Keep you up the amazing work! I def need to make time to watch more of your past work since your edits are always get me fanboying so bad XD.
Thank you SO much for this comment Michael, it really made my day! It's one of those edits where I was mildly obsessed with getting everything right and I'm really glad to hear that!
I'm very glad you still enjoyed it! I don't blame you for not watching the show, the marketing relies on shock value and it can be a bit too edgy at times. But they really know what they're doing with Homelander's character development and the relationship with his son is the best part of it imo
Though I found season 4 to be the weakest of the series so far it did cement for me that Homelander is an S tier of a villain. Anthony starr is spectacular. Great video as always ❤️
Honestly my thoughts, it had a lot of filler. But I loved Homelander's plot, they really write him well and Anthony deserves all the awards in the world. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much! :) ❤️
Reading the description, I totally get you. It’s funny how an absolutely broken monster can end up being a comfort character but whoever said human psychology had to make sense that way. It makes me wonder about the potential of a story that has both an archetypal Homelander and an archetypal Superman within it. To be perceived as heroes by the public, due to radically different upbringings have drastically different approaches to the Hero persona and work to the point that one of them is basically already a villain. Equally matched in such a way that they can’t take each other off the board, but totally opposed in terms of cynicism and hope. If someone just as strong as John (couldn’t be removed as easily as John deals with other threats or challenges to his authority) came along and showed him that there really was a better way, would there be out for him? 🤔 Also, naturally, great edit, duh.
Glad you enjoyed the edit! I think it would depend on whether or not both were in the same universe from the start or if one dropped into the world of the other one day. He had a level of respect for both Stormfront and Soldier Boy, even before he found out that it's his father, because of their strength. He's insecure over people stealing his spotlight and that's how Stormfront intimidated him, but he values power so at the very least, he would respect a potential Superman enough to hear him out because he'd perceive him as an equal. But I don't think Superman could actually get through to him when he literally had everything John ever wanted. Parents, a home and a good upbringing. So he'd think it's easy for Supes to talk about hope when he himself never had a chance. The unfairness of it would probably make him spiral more because Superman is everything he could have been. There's not enough motivation for him to want to be a better person and his major lack of empathy would make it hard even if he wanted to. Then there's the fact that if Superman knew the extent of Homelander's crimes, I'm not sure if he would try to help him because he would definitely not let him walk around free. Of course Homelander would never surrender and let himself be taken in either, so they would not be able to find any common ground.
Same! I love the idea of Superman meeting an evil Superman trope character and I think Homelander would be the most interesting one for that scenario :)
Holy Shit wasn't expecting a release from you actually, but loved the video, how did you enjoyed the 4th season of The Boys and overall the whole show ??
It was really hard to get anything done lately but I couldn't possibly resist editing Homelander. Glad you enjoyed it! Honestly, I think the previous seasons were better in terms of writing and pacing but I enjoyed Homelander's plotline and character development in particular.
I'm not so sure about the first part. Yes, he's bad now but he wasn't always that way. Vogelbaum said he was a sweet and normal child between the ages of 5-6. In the extra-scene from the Blu-Ray where they show him at 13, they said he has isolation-induced depression which went untreated. When he killed a tutor because he hugged her too hard they decide to send in more, reinforcing his behavior. And in the animated canon episode of "The Boys: Diabolical" they showed him trying to save people on his first mission before he had a PTSD-attack and he was visibly horrified when he killed everyone. He became Homelander at 16, so I assume he must have been 18-21 there. I think when you take every detail of him into account, it's clear that he could have been better but nobody ever saw him as a person so he ended up the way he did.
🎞 New edit for him on the channel now! Homelander | Toxic ► th-cam.com/video/4IlXvyOKyvE/w-d-xo.html
Homelander is the perfect case of being a tragic villain yet also being completely irredeamable.
How is he tragic? he had everything anyone would wish and he is still chasing for happiness somewhere outside himself. his appetite for being admired and loved is unsatiable. this character is even more evil than the joker?
