Dog cognitive science has come a long way over the past two decades. Wagging tails, persuasive looks and the shape of ears yield all kinds of information about a dog’s intentions and emotional state.
The way dogs develop human-like behavior has been the subject of many scientific studies.
Research has shown that dogs have the same brain structures that produce emotions in humans, and there are several ways in which dogs demonstrate their love and affection.
So let’s look at 10 proven ways that dogs show their love.
#1. Your dog yawns with you
if a dog yawns when you do - it’s actually a form of social bonding.
Researchers at the University of Tokyo have shown that, just like humans, dogs yawn contagiously, but they're more sensitive to the yawns of their owners than those who they don't know.
Since contagious yawning in humans is linked to empathy, some scientists believe this might be the case with canines too.
#2. Your dog gazes into your eyes when you look at them
Dogs can’t talk with humans in a verbal fashion so they use many non-verbal ways of communicating.
One of the ways in which dogs show their love is gazing directly into your eyes.
According to a research published in the journal of Science, dogs develop strong emotional bonds with humans by staring into our eyes.
This non-verbal way of communication increases level of social hormone called oxytocin in both dogs and their owners.
#3. Your dog raises their eyebrows
When dogs stick out their tongue at the same time as they raise their eyebrows, they are trying hard to mimic your facial expressions in the best way they can.
They won’t do this with other dogs. But they will with you.
According to a research published in Scientific Reports journal, dogs produce significantly more facial movements when humans are paying attention to them than when they are being ignored.
#4. Your dog cuddles up with you after you feed it
This is the surest way to know your dog loves you.
Even though you feed them every day, your dog doesn’t just see you as a feeding machine. They want to cuddle with you after they eat because they want to show you that they love you for more than just their daily meal.
Cuddling also releases endorphins that make them feel better.
So, does your dog want to play alone, or cuddle up with you, after eating?
#5. Your dog brings you its favorite toy
Dogs are possessive about their bones, toys and other chews. So when your dog jumps in your lap and brings you their chewed-up and worn-out favorite toy or bone, be glad!
Because they are displaying two types of behavior that are rooted in their love for you.
First, they are giving you an offering. Second, they believe that you will keep their most prized possession safe
#6. Your dog lets you touch its head
Many dogs don’t like being petted on the top of their head because they perceive it as a threat.
Especially if you are towering over them as a human, they do not like being patted on the top of their skull.
It is much better to get down on their level and scratch them under the chin or at the base of their tail.
So if your dog lets you touch the top of their head, you are their special one.
#7. Your dog gets into your laundry and carries your socks around in its mouth
If your dog sleeps on your clothes, it means it loves you. Your clothing has your scent on it and dogs always want to feel closer to you.
#8. Your dog wags its tail
Your dog will wag its tail to communicate with you.
But it doesn’t always mean it is happy. While wagging its tail in the natural position may be a friendly greeting, be aware of other positions.
If a dog gets nervous, it will wag its tail in a lower position. And if a dog wags its tail held high, it is curious or aroused by something. A slow or stiff tail means that it is about to get aggressive.

#9. Your dog goes crazy when you get home late
Studies have shown that dogs’ reunion with their beloved owner has a significantly positive effect on them, increasing the level of social hormone oxytocin, and lowering the level of stress hormone cortisol.
They are also probably wagging their tail in the upright position - as they are overexcited and curious as to what new treats you are bringing home to them.
And they will reassure you that they love you too. Probably by licking your face.
#10. Your dog follows you around even when you don’t need them to your dog will follow you around even when you want to be alone.
If you have ever given your dog treats, they may follow you around thinking there are always treats on you.

Haha I think mine does too. We always joke that she’s assigned each of us in the house our own jobs where she’s concerned. I’m the one she comes to when she wants to go outside, my grandma is the primary belly rubber, and my mom is who she goes to for food and to play. I think it’s pretty safe to say she loves all 3 of us, but she doesn’t display all of these with any of us, well except the getting excited when we get home part, she does that with everyone.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

I have a black lab called Lloyd. When I say “I love you Lloydy” he’ll stare at me and wag his tail. Then I say “do you love me too?” And he charges over to me, sits on my lap and licks my face. If he’s in a different room as soon as I say “I love you Lloydy” I can hear his tippy taps of his paws moving so fast to come find me and give me kisses 🥰 Dogs are amazing, we don’t deserve them!
Also if you pretend to cry and cover your face, he’ll run over to you and nuzzle your arms away from your face and lick you to death, once you’ve stopped crying he’ll just lie on top of you and stare at you. Now I know they stare to show their love it’s even cuter! 🥰

This happened many times. Whenever I argue with my dad and we both raise our voices, my dog comes over and starts licking me while trying to observe our body language and figure out what's going on. And doesn't leave me until the argument is over. It's amazing how dogs can sense human emotions and try to comfort you when you're sad or upset.

One of my dogs barely ever plays with me. When I’m outside with her, she does off and plays by herself while I play with my other dog. She’ll look up to check if I’m there or not and if she can’t see me bc I might be on the other side of the yard, I shout out ‘I’m here!’ And she happily continues to play by herself. She just wants my presence more than anything which is adorable.

She ended up giving him up and she lost contact with the adopted family, she picked a good family for him. You ever hear those spooky stories of a loved one coming to visit in your dreams, and then it turns out they passed on?? For me, my dog Apollo came to me in a dream. in my dream he was aching cause he was up there in age but he gave his last ounces of energy to get excited to see me. My mother and grandmother were in that dream and they both passed away years ago, so the fact the my dog was with my mom and grandma, I kind of suspected my dog is with them now...for that I cried my eyes out

Ive read a lot of books that mention deceased family members taking care of your pets. It's so beautiful that they all came to you in a dream just to let you know they're all together. We live together with a German- Shepherd Boxer mix. She taught me patience, respect and non verbal communication. She really made me a more loving person and most importantly, she protects our son who she grew up with. Nobody should come too close to him unless he gives his ok. Then she immediately accepts the stranger. She is such a beautiful being and the center of our family.
I adore my puppers! One of them, Sherman, is twelve years old now, and he’s sleeping a lot. I know he’s elderly and gets tired. I sit in his bed with him and fuss him....he loves it. Not sure what I’ll do when I have to let him go. I will never have another like him, that’s for sure. 🌹
You could always get another dog. But it wobtbin nooo way be like the one you lost. I love dogs sooooo much tho. I always intend to have one. (Or 2 ).

i went to my sisters graduation one day with my family and 4 hours later when it ended, we came home to see all of our doggos. miko, my dog was freaking out and didnt let me go to another room without him crying until i came back. he peed on the pad and when i went to my room he followed me while he quirted everywhere. i had so many scratches on my legs from him that day bc he was so happy to see me. i felt bad bc he didnt greet anyone else in my family that much with me. he follows me everywhere nowadays, sleeps on my bed, waits for me, cuddles with me, gets happy randomly when we stare at each other for a while and licks my face with joy. im so happy that hes my family and will always be. ❤️

My dog is my little personal shadow. We got him when he was about 3 years old and he turns 16 this year in June. Wherever I go, he goes. I don't really mind. It's been like that for so long I think I'd be lost if he wasn't always nearby.
Enjoy him while he lasts. Give him as much love as you can, as it’s rare to see a dog that age. Please keep in mind though, if your dog experiences pain a lot from age, it’s best if you put it down.

So does my Yorkie Ollie. He is the sweetest little guy. Next month on the 13th I will have had him 4 years. He was so timid whenbi very first got him now he is so laid back & comfortable. Its like he's a different dog. He has gotten such an abundance of love & affection. He's my little "man".
I've had dogs all my life and I was born in 1937. 3 dogs live with me currently, and I love them all more than I can express in words.. The greatest sorrow I've had in my life has been when one of my beautiful companions has come to the end of his or her path.

Dogs are basically just a son that lasts you about a sixth of your life. I don’t want to get one when I grow up, I feel like I’d be a horrible owner. And besides, I don’t even really like owning animals anyway.
Regarding #9... How crazy a dog is about you coming back home, is - sadly - actually more of a measure on how traumatic it was for them to be left alone, and how anxious and stressed out it makes them, than anything else. It's basically a major trust issue going on - they don't know for certain whether you'll be back or not, and they're not feeling any good about it. So when you DO eventually come home, an overjoyful, exstatic reaction is not a very good sign tbh. You probably need to get to work training your dog, step by step, to feel more secure with you out of their sight.
Most of my dogs have always stayed put in all quiet in bed when I get back home, and I've had to come in and greet them where they are. This is the BEST sign ever! The dogs are So CALM, relaxed and utterly unbothered by the situation of being home alone, they barely even notice I'm back at all! This means, being left alone for a while now and then, is no big deal and they can chill, rest assured I'll definitly be back soon.
I've had two dogs tho, with separation anxiety and that's just heartbreaking, because most people cant take ther pooch with'em *everywhere* 24/7, 365. The doberman absolutely total-wrecked the door frame with his claws once, and got painful splinters in his pawpads in the process.
The poodle I once filmed with a rigged GoPro when left home. He had his calm older "brother" with him, a comfy bed with my used shirt in it right next to the door, and a tasty chew to keep his mind busy. But all he did throughout the entire time, was lay hurdled up on the door mat - shaking, crying and howling desperately. It was horrific to watch that later! He was the type that jumped and jumped, danced around, whipping his tail around like a propeller, whining hysterically of joy when I got home... Why, because he loved me? Yes of course - but also because being left home without me for any period of time was absolut unbearable hell to him emotionally! A short while after that I rehomed him to a close friend of mine who is home full time. Best descision for that dog AND my conscience! He still get's pretty winded up and happy when we meet, tho, cute little flooferboi.
I have the same problem :-( My little dog is the love of my life. She was found on the streets in Spain as a little pup, and put in a pound for a few months until she got fostered, socialized, and sent to live with me at around 6 months old. She is utterly sweet, loving and calm and quiet. But she becomes profoundly terrorized, barking non-stop if left alone. It is heart-breaking to see her fear, and hysterical elation when we return...be it ten minutes or a few hours. WE have tried everything. She basically has to be with a human companion 24/7....which is very very tricky when you work, as you know. Her 'babysitter' passed away last week....this lovely old guy. Im desperately trying to find a solution. I simply will not consider re.homing her....I made a promise to be her mom and care for her forever. Ugh :-(

My dog barks at anyone who comes to the front door unless it's someone in my household, but whenever she barks at regular visitors, by dog immediately brings them a shoe to apologise, raise her eyebrows and express guilt in her body language. I recognise dogs don't actually feel guilt per-say, but it's still very cute!
