without question, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan are immortalized in this one song forever more. Bob Dylan wrote the beginnings and Joan Baez the endings of this amazing eternity love song!
It’s irrational that anybody could write a lyric more beautiful and intriguing than this. Yet, I have no idea what the hell Dylan is talking about - but I could listen to it over and over and over again.
@FlaschDJ • In an odd way, I find the emotions here are similar to Taylor Swift's song "All Too Well." Dylan's version is more metephorical than Taylor's but they both evoke the intensity of a once in a lifetime love that doesn't work out.
It's wonderful. I think he is talking about is the conflict between the very exaggerated ideals people have about romantic love (the notion that there is a soulmate out there, a perfect and destined partner)....versus the hard practicalities, simple needs, and many pressures of life that crash into and so often destroy the illusion of that perfect partner, breaking up relationships that were thought to be guaranteed "forever". It's all throughout the song. Perfect romantic illusions, struck down by practical realities, selfishness, desire, avoidance, fear of commitment, and mere survival. A relationship can't survive on pure idealism. It also has to rest on a practical foundation ("she sat with a baby heavy on her knee"). If a relationship is based on *reality*...rather than just on a romantic dream or just on fleeting sexual desire...if people are willing to take on the hard responsibilities of life together and really commit and face all that comes with that...then it has a good chance of lasting. If not, if it's just romantic excitement, it's probably going to end fairly soon. But as Joan added in the final verse (which she wrote), there are also personal emotional connections that go so deep between individuals that they *can* last a lifetime. She and Bob had connections that deep. They weren't going to stay together. But they were going to remain emotionally connected at a deep level, regardless, because there was genuine love there. It happens. It just doesn't guarantee that things are going to "work out" in any particular way, that's all. People have all kinds of silly notions about what they call "love" (a four letter word they use, but don't understand), and most of them are unrealistic. But that doesn't mean that love itself isn't real. It is. But it's not easy!
For me, the song talks about how many different types of love there are, and in the end concludes that love can be seen, touched and felt so many times in life that it can't mean more than just a four-letter word, because any other interpretation would be short. He talks first about the love of a mother, who someone could say that they are “slaves” of their role and children, but in the song she doesn’t recognise those feelings In her face, the mother just says what she has learnt through live to an inexperienced person, that love is just a four letter word. From there the song jumps between the denial of the protagonist and his romantic experiences until the realisation that the phrase was true when she encounters again her first love after travelling the world and knowing more people. just my interpretation but I’m happy with it for now

The Creator and the Angel!
This cannot have been written by a mere mortal. Incredible doesn’t even come close to describing it.
Good Dylan cover.

Excellent interpretation of the song , I felt the same way when I heard the song but you really put all my thoughts together.
Bob and Joan... The match made in heaven.🤍
Kathy, all these years I'm still listening and remember Italian dinners and Chianti.Favorite now is "Diamonds and Rust".
This is one of Dylan's better lyrics. Great tune as well.
