    Love this I just bought a house with this type of system and need to upgrade it

    My grandfather built his house in 56 and put the system in the home. Absolutely love this system way ahead of it's time.

    I too have these old GE relays in my house. Have been brainstorming about doing something with Shelley or Sonoff, and really appreciate your fine example. I'm excited to get started.

    Awesome! Like others, I've been looking for ways to improve on my old relay system, which is Touchplate (although I think some of the switches around the house are of another brand). Like you had, I have two boxes of relays which look like bird's nests and need a lot of work. Your video is very helpful and well done. Great job and thanks for sharing!

    I too have the same pain as everyone else who has this wiring. Unfortunately, I'm not quite as skilled in electrical as you all are. Watching this though is great because now maybe I have a different option than just ripping out the old wiring and re-doing it with traditional wiring.

    I have a Remcom system and I have seen relays mounted in the junction boxes. So, I don’t have the issue with the bird’s nest of wires, but it does mean that I have to revive lights to get to the old relays. I guess it saves me from hunting down what relay controls what switch!?

    This was the first and only video I saw on these systems before creating my own channel to explain them (and other electronics and automation goodness). This is my second winter with Shelly replacements and the system has been great. I'd be interested to know how the system in this video is holding up and if there have been any modifications in these last three years. If anyone is looking for wiring installation instructions, please check out the videos below.

      The system is still going strong. I have not had one Shelly fail yet. I have added a few to the system due to a kitchen remodel last year. Everything has been working great.

    What DC volt power supply did you use for this? Like you I need to update my touchplate system and want to make it as you did. Are there any downside to removing all of the old relays and just using the panel my current touchplate is in?

    I have the same setup in my house- I've been looking for a solution for a while and seeing this video gave me renewed inspiration... What voltage did you run the DC transformer at through the existing wires / which model? Thanks in advance.... :)

      @@smurfsky101 My first try was using the existing transformer for the Shelly. No go due to poorly regulated voltage. Had success with 12 vdc from a spare power supply.

    Great video! I have the same low voltage system. Your video doesn't have a lot of wiring detail on the Shelly 1's. Can you provide any more detail? Or can I email you?

    • @YourFool
      @YourFool 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My experience says switch leg must be low voltage due to existing wires and switches, so I am using a 12vdc brick on the control side of the Shelly 1, and isolating the 120vac on the dry relay side. Down side of this scheme is that only the Shelly 1 has dry contacts, and dimmers or power monitors wont work. YMMV, but if old relays co-exist with Shellys beware of impedance loads from the old relays. FWIW, have had good luck with MQTT on Home-Assistant with the Shellys.

      @@YourFool Isn't the power requirements for the switch low enough that it could be used as 120/v ac line voltage with a fuse to the momentary switch or possibly even a standard wall switch?

    • @YourFool
      @YourFool 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@inaxsesable Applying 120vac to the old switch and small guage wires sounds iffy. The switch wiring was originally powered from a 24 vac transformer, which I believe was half-wave rectified. The Shelley doesn't seem to like that power as a control signal. Replacing the old transformer with a new solid state 12vdc power supply might work best. Good luck.

I swear im not dumb, i just need to know how you jumped your 3 wires. Ive got the new 24vdc power supply, im just lost on how to land my wires from the 3 wire switch. Thank you so much. @timothyevenson6647 ok that makes total sense. So your sending 24 vdc on one wire, and the other wire is saying "open or close."
