I travelled in Rameshwaram boat mail to go to Columbu by buying ticket in Chennai (Madras). Ticket was printed as Madras Egmore to Columbu Fort. Ticket fare upto Columbu was Rs.180 only. The fare covered by train upto Rameshwaram and ferry charge named S.S. Ramanujam (old name was S.S. Irwin) upto Thalaimannar and reserved birth charge by Thalaimannar Columbu Fort all inclsive except food charges on the ferry. The train track and ship photo shown in your video was not Tuticorin, but Dhanushkodi. We have to get down from one side of the platform in the port and walk on the ramp to reach the ship other side. After Dhanushkodi was swallowed by sea we were shifted from Rameshwaram port to ferry anchored 500 meters away by small boats.
Very nice brother l studied in 5th std 1981 in Paramakudi on those days we use to go to Rameswaram in Steam Engine then diesel locomotives came its memorable experience

All North Indian pilgrims used to prepare chappathi n dhall for minimum 20 person's n take rest in platform itselfj at trichy jn n caftch rameswaram boat mAil djuring 01 30 minutes at trichy Jan n reach rameswaram by 8 am approximately. But one peculiar thing from trichy it is stream engine which is Memorable enjoyable N cannot be forgotten. At that time there was 2 tier SL coach n 3 tier SL coach. 2 tier means sleeper means berth upper n Lowe sitting for passengers. 36 tier means lower middle n upper.

I have travelled dozens of time in my young days,from chidambaram to trichy nd madras. Those days this was one of some dozen trains travelling at around 60kms .per hour,,considered to be v.fast those days. Today vande bharat trains can travel at 180kms maximum but run on 100 to 120 kms.per hour only due to track condition nd animals/people can cross the track on the route?

Ship was not costly but risky as Chennai did not have harbour till 1881 it had to carried in #Katumarams (catamaran) upto 2km from Madras Harbour (so many goods submerged in sea) so #Indo_Ceylon_Express #Tuticorin_Colombo ship route had to cross Sethu so cannot take heavy ships (As was initially used) @Boat mail was the solution as #DhanushKodi as it was build with #Ship #Pier Platforms. The Picture you showed as Tuticorin Pier is actual #DhanushKodi_Pier
I travelled from Elmore to Colombo by this boat mail in 1976 and got married. there and returned after one month by same train. It was memorable journey in my life.
A lot of money and engineering needed to revive line from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi. Can be done .it will be a big tourist attraction than the train to statues.
There is no train between India srilanka today. Remember one thing our fishermen are caught and there is no cooperation with that country. So future no one knows. In simple No train.
