First, good concept and a well-made video. If I might offer a few tips (from an old guy who has been making things like leashes for decades): 1. Maybe use a carabiner so that it can be easily replaced - the springs in most clips will eventually wear out and you'd have to deal with that issue. 2. Start with a barrel braid for about 8 reps, then do your four-strand braid. The next tip will explain why. 3. Instead of passing through the strands with the needle nose that you do around 2:25, go for another barrel braid (about 8 reps) to make a loop. This barrel-braid will be braided around the four-strand braid. This will let your leash be adjustable. The barrel at the beginning will keep the ending barrel from sliding off the four-strand braid if you decide to shorten to 50% length and the clip/carabiner decides to break at that particular moment. The back-braiding that you did is basically an old-school method of splicing rope. Again good job on the video and the leash.
I've made a few of these leashes for my +90lbs german shepherds and they work great. I back braided the handle around 10 times and have never had any problems with it coming undone. Thanks for the great video

+Daniel Ebling You can use a thicker cord. Something like Antenna cord is thicker than paracord. It's not as strong, but it should be strong enough for any dog you're likely to be walking.

How much Paracord do you need to make a finished 5 foot leash? If you have 240 inches to start then unbraided the leash would be 5 feet because 240/4 strands =60inches, but when you braid it it will be much shorter right?

The general rule of thumb is that you lose 25% material to the braid. Since we were adding a handle and back braiding, it was just easier to double the length needed for the leash than to do all the math required. For example, if you are doing a 6 foot leash, you would cut each color at 24 ft so that when you halve it at the snap, your 4 working strands will be 12 ft - double what your finished length will be. We prefer to have extra cord, than not enough at the end. Finished length X 4 (double the finished length for each of the colors you are halving at the snap) (2 X 2 colors = 4)
Just curious about 550 paracord used. 550ib is static force & 100-110ib is dynamic force calculated I've heard... Does that technically mean 1 strand paracord is all you'd technically require for a dog lead? Genuine question... I'd like to minimise as much weight off my dogs collar/neck, whilst still maintaining safety.

Even with the barrel braid at the start and the end, it still made a 9.5 foot leash that is adjustable. 50 ft total made for a 9.5 ft leash. 1200 inches is 100 ft. So, I would expect a leash of about 19 feet. I braid very tight, so my length will vary from another person.
If you are still making your leash, I put some tips in a previous comment. There are many videos showing the barrel braid - which I recommend for beginning and ending the leash.
if you notice she actually laced the cord back into the braids 4 times before melting the tips. I would recommend a couple extra times also depends on the dog.

there is way easier way to doing 4 strand around braid, if you look up 4 strand braid the easy way on youtube there is a video by tyingitalltogether. and a tip start the 4 strand from the clasp dont do the knots at the beginning looks alot nicer:)

The camera is not held steady, the procedure for back-braiding the handle can't be seen clearly and is done too fast, the bright yellow cord against the (poorly chosen) black background is way overexposed, makimg it hard to see what's going on with the yellow cord. That music is annoying and serves no purpose, so why is it even there? And you people do instructional vids professionally? I'd find another profession.

I want to attempt making a 25foot “cable” that would be 1200 inches of paracord. So if I did 2 colors that would be 600 inches of each color correct?
