Hi from a fellow Aussie. I've designed a number of BMSs and passive balancers and really liked the look of this. I've just connected it up and it is doing everything I expect. Thanks for suggesting the improvements, without which I would not have bought it. I told the store that I only bought it because of your work, your videos and your suggestions plus the changes they made. Keep up the good work, regds Dave

You have done a great job in guiding Hankzor. The big change in the 4th gen is they no longer use the average pack voltage but first past the post for sampling which allows balancing to come on earlier.
You are now in a position to do a head to head before we claim the Neey is best bang for buck. Isolate your 16S JKBMS pack. Fully charge to 56V and balance to 10mV. Discharge 1 cell 50-100Ahr. Then maintain overall pack voltage at 55V and see how long it takes active balancer to get delta V to 10mV. Do for both JKBMS active balancer and Neey to see if 4A is really better than 2A.
Then you can get a JK 2A standalone active balancer and do the same comparison and you will have a definitive winner to announce. You may even be able to debunk the myth that a active balancer needs to be turned off below below 3.4V and you can use just delta V to switch on/off for LFP systems ( as long as you don't charge your Tesla!)

One thing to keep in mind. It’s not really “4 amps”, eg you can’t push 4ah in an hour. It’s more like 1ah due to the procedure used. (Discharge/charge is done separately and the periodical voltage measurement “cost time”)

After watching your video review of the new Daly BMS with smart Active Balancer, I started regretting having bought that same BMS under the HiBMS name. But you kept comparing it's smart active balancer to the Neey 4th Gen, so I clicked on your Aliexpress link you provided and was surprised that it sold for than $12. Now, as you suggested I can use it together with the Daly active BMS or use it to assist my ANT BMS. Thanks so much for your precious videos! Hopefully they will, but if they don't, I'm actually lucky that it was only $12 and will learn from this lesson. Cheers!

Thanks for this update and testing Andy and nice to see that these manufacturers are responding to the feedback. Im not convinced at this stage that this new balancer will do a better job than my 48v JK BMS, or that I would require it. There is a 90 second turnaround on each cell being balanced, compared to the JK constantly juggling between cells. Im not sure how this new model is doing its charge/discharge cycle, but it would appear that it doesn’t series the caps output like we believe the JK does & I think this is what may make the JK possibly a more efficient Balancing method. Interesting to see how this one goes, seems to be a vast improvement from previous versions. Cheers All

While it’s great that they have really listened to your feedback and quickly made improvements, it’s quite a bit more expensive than the regular Heltec, especially in a 4s configuration as seems really inefficient given the capacitor charge discharge cycle. It would be really interesting to see a head to head without any extra loads comparing how long it takes for each one to really balance a pack. There are small devices to control the Heltec and it may be possible to turn it on and off using a relay.

I bought a super cheapo active balancer which activates at 100mv diff, and stops at 20mv diff. As it happens my cells at 3.5v = 60/70mv.but at 3v = 0mv. So even with lakitto cheapy cells it all works out fantastic. They wouldn't Bottom balance but if the top gets too far, it's nice to know it'd active balance, and stop again at float.

With that tiny balancer, you can switch them off manually. There are a pair of contacts on the edge of the board, marked as “ON” as I recall. As delivered, the contacts are joined by a solder bridge, but if you remove that solder bridge, then you can attach a simple activation switch in its place. Then you have a choice here. If you have a battery bank with at least a pair of batteries of “ample capacity”, on something like a boat with just solar power available, then the batteries will sit comfortably at less than, say, 90% SOC where no balancing will take place because of the very flat voltage curve around there. So then balancing becomes more of periodic maintenance operation where you might switch the loads away from one battery and the charging away from the others. Then allow that one battery to charge higher where balancing can occur and switch the active balancer on manually. Then repeat on another battery. Is this feasible?

I use LFP Batteries and hav set me Victron MPPTs to bulk loading until 16x 3.45V = 55.2V and absorbtion loading 55.1V. So the Neey kicks hwen teh highest cell goes over 3.44V does the balancing at the switching point from bulk to absorbtion and shuts off when cell voltage goes under 3.42V, what happens when there comes no power from the MPPTs or when the load is higher than the sun input.

Danke Andi.

They do balance all the time, but only if the difference is larger than 10 mV, so they avoid unbalance in the flat area, and help weak cells at lower SOC. This is similar to a combination of top and bottom balancing. They can be cascaded for any number of cells.

I think the advertised 4A is a bit misleading. Half of the time it charges the cap and half of the time it is discharging the cap. So this is only 2A in average. Additionally it is checking the voltage and switching off the discharging of the cap while doing that. So honestly it is only a 1-1,5A balancer in average.

It’s actually worse than that because he said it is charging for 1 minute and discharging in 30 seconds so it’s actually 1/3.

There are a switch vias on the Heltec balancer PCB. You can either install a physical switch or automate it. It only stays on all the time because you are not using this switch. It's labeled "run" on the PCB and the two vias are soldered together (NC).

Hey Andy, I send you an eMail with some screenshots showing crazy behaviour of the Neey 4th Generation Balancer. My one is taking energy from the lowest cell and transfer it to the highest. The opposite of what a balancer should do with the battery. The battery is totally imbalancing, when the balancer is turned on. I think the chinese guys build the first imbalacer device on the market. :-)))

How about a diy option, where you use the capacitive balancer with a voltage relay trigger ? I have done that - but you need to be careful with the voltage relay trigger as the voltage measured is inaccurate . Would be nice to see a comparison as the voltage trigger is only about 5USD.

Re 30V supply. I just received my unit and noticed on the box it says (for the power supply) 25 to 100V. I downloaded the latest PDF from github and it also says 25V (used to be 30V). I contacted them to ask about the 25V and also what happens if the voltage is below that. I hoped they would say that the unit just stops working. They replied you can now go down to 20volts and also 8S (rather than the previous 10S). That's great news for me as I was interested in 8S.

I have been testing with an 8s 460AH LFP bank and no external power supply. Furthest I have been down so far is 25.4V and I can confirm that everything continues working fine with the NEEY and that voltage. I doubt my battery will ever get below 25V to test that so I'll leave it to someone else to try. That would be a pack with each cell at 2.5V.

I don't think the caps would fully discharge, it would only discharge the differential voltage between the high voltage cell and low voltage cell until they become equal in voltage otherwise you would need a buck-boost converter built into the BMS to fully drain the cap

I think you missed a great opportunity to show the active balancer to properly balance the cells over a 7 day period. And you say it was a struggle because the power supply had to be adjusted manually because you didn't want the BMS to cut off charging. IMO, if you just set the power supply to 58 volts and turned on the NEEY active balancer you could have easily recorded the PACK DELTA day by day and it would just keep chugging along with the BMS doing its job by turning on charging as the HIGH cell gets discharged into the LOW cell and then WE could see how the voltage DELTA changes each day. Why don't you trust the BMS? You are so safe with the charging voltage on your power supply even though the BMS is hooked up?

I agree. What would also have been interesting is having this compared with the current champion BMS (JKBMS) in your setup…
I’m finally ordering my parts for my big battery and I think having a decent BMS with all the best functions far outweigh a dinky BMS that needs to be babysat by ancillary devices to cover its shortfalls…
JK BMS for the win until further notice
