I loved this movie because of how determined Veronica was to protect her siblings. I cried when she realized she wasn't holding Antonito and still went back for him.

I felt kind of empty after the movie ended, I was actually rooting that Veronica survives, but I guess there's no happy ending for these kind of stories.

I had watched this movie with my parents and my father had caught something that I never would have noticed. My father noticed that when they showed that painting of the 4 wolves chasing the deer one later went missing when she was running across from it. And that the wolf on her shirt must have been the wolf that was missing. I came up with the idea that maybe the wolves, chasing the deer, signify the demon while the deer would signify Verónica and that the missing wolf that would later be on her shirt signifies the demon has entered Verónica.

Loved this movie. Nothing really original in terms of monsters and basic plot points, but it was well shot, well paced, had decent scares, and the young cast really carried it. Also, maybe it's just me, but having the movie set in Spain adds so much charm, as it allows it to bypass the preconceptions we all develop when we're given the same American high school setting we've all grown very tired of.

@Baron von Stubby first, i am not a kid, that's your interpretation, it can easily be interpreted as everything being in her head and the product of mental illness since after all, she was the only one seeing the " demon". third, if we are talking about the photos being real, then no , they weren't , the real case that happened in vallecas has nothing to do with this movie, in fact the " paranormal" happening started after the girl( whose name was estefania, not veronica) died. the house didn't even look like that to begin with.
Yeah I remember when The Exorcist was called the scariest movie of all time along with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th etc etc etc... Then came Paranormal Activity the scariest movie of all time. LOL They really throw that title around a lot don't they?!!
paulzprz Shit... Thats a hard one, honestly I have to say most Alien Abduction movies scare the shit out of me, let's just say I've had a few experiences myself, nothing too crazy but those keep me up at night... As far as actual horror movies, I guess I would say the Texas Chainsaw Massacre the original just because it's so surreal and it could actually happen and even though it's not a horror movie some considered to be Deliverance is actually pretty freaking scary because that could definitely happen.
Brandon Cosme Shit that's hard to say... I know the X-Files episode Duane Barry is pretty scary. Extraterrestrial (2014) is an IFC Midnight movie that was pretty good. It's done well. Not too cheesy, it has a really good ending that most likely happens in real life when these things do happen... Alien Abduction (2014) it's pretty good, it's a found-footage style but it's done fairly well. I'd have to say Fire in the Sky (1993) is pretty scary. I also wouldn't say most of these are scary. They're more or less freaky. Especially to think that this really happens and especially if you've had experiences yourself... But Fire in the Sky is the true story of the Abduction of Travis Walton, just look up his name. Wiki him you'll learn all about it. But the movie really does his abduction and experience justice. I've met Travis 3 times in person at different conventions across the country. He's a really awesome guy, he doesn't like to retell the story but when he does tell it even when it's to a crowd, it's on a whole different level than watching a documentary about him and his experience or some Hollywood movie. But check those out if you want to see some fairly decent alien abduction movies. In my opinion of course.
There's a scene in the beginning of the movie , in the classroom as Veronica & Rosa prepare to leave after everybody. Veronica walks right infront of the projector and the eclipse ring is reflected on her tee. That scene foreshadowed everything that followed.
I thought I recognised the invocation symbol that is accidentally used, and I did! So, in the Lesser Key of Solomon the sigil of Asmodeus is eerily similar. Now what also intrigued me about this is that Asmodeus is the demon of lust, which might explain why Veronica got her first period, as a way for this demon to force her into maturity and into the world of lust. Just a theory.
@@missbarretto5184 The commenter here never said they use demonic sigils or perform rituals with them. Just that they recognize them, likely from studying religion. “Keeping the unknown, unknown” is keeping yourself ignorant to things that could hurt you. You believe in this stuff if you clearly think it’s so dangerous, so what if a demon started haunting you and placing their sigil on the wall as the only hint to their identity? If you didn’t study demonic sigils you’d have no idea and that demon could totally mess up your life. Just because someone studies the effects of something doesn’t mean they indulge in it themselves. It’s like studying about how hard street drugs work, doesn’t necessarily mean you do them or have a desire to, but it helps you learn
Being from Spain I can only vaguely remember the news on TV, but what I can remember perfectly is my mom being obsessed with this case and repeating over and over everytime I went out to play with my friends to never play with a Ouija board. She never stopped repeating that like a broken record until I finished highschool
You definitely skipped over the scene when she was walking home and crossed paths with the demon dressed identically like her but when she turned around something prevented her from seeing the persons face but when she faced forward the demon looked back. It was like a force kept them from looking at each other. I wanna know why that scene was so significant that the director placed it in.
Sounds like she died from natural causes and all the shadows she was experiencing was probably hallucinations brought on by sleep paralysis .. hence why she was afraid to go to sleep..everything can be explained although for once why can’t someone produce something concrete.. I hate being skeptic lol
@@ivannav9175 not so much schizofrenia as a psychotic brake due to depression and stress, that's how i interpreted the movie ( and actually is more scary than a demon) . this teenage girl, only 15, is trying to deal with the death of her father, but she has not really time to mourn because her mother needs her to be strong and responsible to take care of her brothers. so the 15 year old is forced to embrace the responsabilities of an adult, take care of her siblings like a second mother, be her mother's rock and tha makes her unable to mourn correctly her loss and also is straining her from her friends and her social life, she can't meet her friends out of school and do normal fun things with them because she has to be an adult and take care of the little ones and help her mom. all of that is a lot of pressure for a girl that age, the.menstruation represents her fear to actually grow up when she is not being allowed to be a child , and ahe unconsciously harms her siblings because they are the reasons she is being forced to be like an adult and losing her friends and life, so she loves them but a part of her also hates them. the idea that stress and depression could make you lose your mind to the point of harming people you care about or even yourself without even realizing it, it's possible and a lot morrescary than a demon on a ouija board. btw, this movie doesn't look anything like the original story is supposedly based on.
Charlie C it seems like a lot that I've watched have done that. A lot of people that I've asked about these movies have said they were scary themselves too lol.
"Eh it's a pretty good movie, if you have spare time and money and maybe even companionship you may be interested in watching it or at least using it as background noise"
Fun fact, the viking symbol she drew is not a protection against demons. It's known as a compass, called Vegvisir. Its protection so that you may find your way whenever the path is unknown, whether it's stormy weather or "stormy" mentally.
Usually, in movies about demonic possession we see the point of view of people witnessing the possessed person, but in Veronica we saw the point of view of someone who is possessed that's why i find this movie so great and original
I also really loved that aspect of the movie. When I first watched it with my sister in 2017 we were blown away when we figured out Verónica was the possessed one. The whole time you’re rooting for her to find and expel the demon, but realizing the demon was possessing her the whole time? Gave me shivers, man
What if when the picture burned, that was a sign of the real Veronica dying, and she actually did not have a pulse, but she was revived, allowing the demon to take her place, which is why the picture was restored?
Exchanged for the soul, is to make the demon occupy the previous vessel, via invocation by the foolish little brother. The foolish little brother might had been told by the 'father' to do this. He sacrifice veronica soul for the demon. Meaning, veronica are replacing where the demon are summoned. Aether. She is there. As long the vessel still alive, she might made it back if the foolish brother resummoned her. Then, her soul might be twisted then or consumed by demons. Lol
@@scotty2hottie626 Depends on if they decide to make a sequel, alot of myths have the demon break you down mentally to make your mental barriers weak than it kills you and takes your body. I can easily see a sequel or epilogue/alternate ending having her body dissapeared.

I hope this encourages you to keep doing what you're doing because it makes movie watchers like me enjoy a different genre that we don't really go out to see.
This story was very famous in Madrid when I was little, usually we did something similar like bloody mary and such to try and talk to veronica, or to ask her things, or do bad things to people we didn't like. My grandmother was the one who told me about the real story, and when the movie came out a lot of people where a little scared because of the the "urban legend" we were told when we were kids
I think it's because when she fainted at the beginning of the movie after the ouija thing, the nurse told her to eat meat so she can be stronger (because she has iron deficiency) so maybe the demon doesn't want her to be stronger...
There are some more horror-movies where people allegedly had left the cinema, which I never get. I mean, pay for your ticket and live with your nightmares after it! :D
When Antoñito was getting burned in the bathtub I was so shocked at his reaction, he didn’t even cry and was so calm about it. Stg if that was my sister, even the demon would run away plugging his ears shut
** SPOILER ALERT ** so why didn't the Galdrastafur protect her? We see this happen A LOT in these horror movies involving demons. The people, or person, will be wearing amulets, using crucifixes, holy water, or whatever, and they don't work against the demon. Trapping Tobi in the sheet blessed with the Key of Solomon, in Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, was supposed to send him back to hell. It didn't work! The priest was killed, and the little girl got her blood drawn so he could get humanized and walk the earth.
Fun fact, the viking symbol she drew is not a protection against demons. It's known as a compass, called Vegvisir. Its protection so that you may find your way whenever the path is unknown, whether it's stormy weather or "stormy" mentally.
Kinda where she fucked up was with the Viking "Protection symbol" Its the Runic compass a symbol more about not getting lost in travel than not been killed by demons.
I'm surprised there's not more discussion about the symbolism linking the story of Veronica and sexual abuse and intergenerational trauma. Yes you could view it as the demon possessed them and watch the movie through that scope. In parallel theres a lot of things are a hinting Veronica was sexually abused by her dad. Spoilers - Him appearing to her naked and forcing himself upon her. - It could be interpreted that the kids were sexually molested as well in the bed frames and how the stains were of an adult humanoid figure spooning, sleeping with all of the children. - The meatball scene. Her body becoming physically frozen/paralyzed and rejecting the "meatball" going into their body. - Mom hesitant to talk about dad You could view it as when she "realized she became a demon" herself as it could be interpreted as Veronica may have molested the siblings as what was done to her. Very unfortunate but all to common where the abused can abuse others. The kids were always talking about how "there was no else there, and it was always her that was choking them etc." - Bed wetting is commonly seen with children that experienced some form of sexual abuse. - When she begs her mom to stay with the family. "Hes not here when you are around" alluding to how when her mother works all day and night, they are left home with dad and the siblings and thats when the "terrorizing" takes place. - The wolf and deer painting can be interpreted as they were deer escaping from the "wolf/dad/abuse" which Veronica in seen to have become the wolf herself, (on her shirt) symbolizing that the sexual abuse cycle may have continued. - Veronica looking into the mirror and see what she's become and is overwhelmed with guilt and shame, taking her own life. Again, you would have to view the story separately, and not cling so close to the paranormal aspect. But one could view it as a demon possession or a psychological thriller. This is only to be interpreted through the lens that although the story is about possession, it could also have an underlying narrative of sexual trauma experienced and passed on through generations.
Dude, not everything is about that. The new prequel proves that. It has nothing to do with sexual abuse... You spent way too much time on this. "Meatball"? Really? hahaha
nah. if i was veronica and i was abused by my dead dad, i wouldnt work hard to talk to him through an ouija board and i'll just be glad that he ded. her trying hard to reach out to her dad means she loves him. and i dont know if u've taken care of siblings but u dont think of m-lesting them unless u're sick in the head. also, i knew someone who was a bedwetter and they werent molested as a kid. also, the next movie proves this theory to be wrong big time.
Hey. When veronica was on the ground whispering to her friend. She didnt realy tell her "you will die today". She told her that the she (veronica) would die on that day where the whole possession took place. Like a premonition I guess. Good video anyway
"blood pooling out of her midsection" That's not her "midsection," my dude. The mom saying "grow up" and the placement of the blood is indicative of puberty and Veronica dealing with the pains and stresses of a maturing body on top of all her other responsibilities. Poor thing needs a heating pad and some chocolate, stat!
I don't get the chocolate thing, personally. I never get cravings for it, just a lot of pain and a need for hot water. Just get her some ginger tea or magnesium tablets and she should be A-okay.

singing a jingle for a floor cleaning product? if I was that demon I'd feel offended! how dare you! i wasted my days haunting you and this is the best song you could think of? for shame!
is not even remotely similar to this, to begin with the original story starts after tje girl ( estefania, not veronica) already died. the father was not dead, and i think it was him who called the police on the night that the " happenings" became more violent. though is almost proven it was all staged by the mother who was a narcisist and very religiously obssesed.
there are even theories that the daughter was sick and died because the mother was causing the sickness to get attention and when the girl died the woman convinced her entire family she had been possesed and the demon was haubting them now to keep having attention, the rest of the family ended believing it because of colective hysteria. so if that is all true( and it makes a lot of sense with the infor there is of that case) i would say the original story is actually scarier because of the mother being so crazy and dangerous
@@DavidAlvarez-gw5zc same. I wonder why @nessy ness didnt answer your comment lol? Probably because they CANT explain that. But they can have the opinion that the mother was a lunatic.

Don't you hate waking up in a nightmare, only to still be in another nightmare and waking up into a 3rd nightmare😤...makes me so 😠! Demons should fear me coming into their realm.
i feel its on a more realistic pattern as well. nuns are also human. and with the time span of everything happening in 3 days i doubt there was much the nun could of done to help.
"So scary i couldnt finish" the most over reactive and baity statment i have ever heard. This really didnt scare or creep me out, its just cliche. Girl plays ouji board, girl is haunted, girl dies, people mourn at the end.
Based on a true story means that they heard about something and decided to make a movie about it. You could make a film about the Malaysian airways plane getting abducted by aliens and then say its based on a true story. In real life she was probably just an untreated schizophrenic with a neglectful parents. That explains the frequent seizures and hallucinations she experienced. In reality the story is just sad not scary. If you want scary go read about the Dyatlov pass incident. That shits terrifying.
CrazedHamster99 yeah i was thinking the same thing, wether she was more stressed and depressed because she has to juggle a lot of things with an unsupportive mother she could of gotten some type of mental illness and her mind could of justified her actions but projecting a "demon" figure after playing the ouji board. Its not a bad story. But it really is an overblown horror, i mostly find it average... If my speculation is somewhat true.
We watched it in Spanish classes and I gotta say I'm really confused by Antoňitos behavior. A little kid like him would undoubtedly be very scared in that sort of situation and would most likely not go in the general direction or even follow the demon. If there are some unexplained phenomena that justify this, let me know.
It could be because it came to him previously as his dad. Demons and the devil are forever hiding in the guise of others. This is why in Christianity it is forbidden to use this "game" or consult with mediums/psychics it supposedly makes u vulnerable to these entities. They pretend to be your dead loved ones to trick u. I'm Christian, I believe these thing's, I've experienced both the presence of God and these evil spirits, not like in this movie of course but I had some very strange experiences.

Calling it the “scariest film of all time” is EXTREMELY laughable. Like most rumors, apparently a few tweets from ppl that clearly aren’t horror movie enthusiasts (or have never seen a horror movie in their lives 🤦🏻♀️) said they had to turn it off midway through the movie bc they were so “terrified” caused a snowball effect.
Yeah... I actually recognized the typical spanish architecture. But still a meh movie. Why does this guy always have to implement Catholic stuff in his movies? In Rec he did the same damn thing.
@@JoeMartinez18 well in most possesion movies there is religious stuff, in these case is catholic because is the main religion in spain and the family( both in the movie and the case is very slightly inspired by) are catholic. in fact the family of the original story the mother was kind of obssesed with gof

The movie isn’t scary tbh, just the real photos shown at the end are what people get creeped out about
When I was in grade 3-4 me, my cousin, and my brother watched this movie.. I had nightmares for weeks 😬
So your in 7th grade
Those werent the actual photos they were the same stage of the movie just with a flash
@Baron von Stubby ...you take photos with flash in the studio ..and then add them at the end of the movie...

Jon Murphy its all opinions. Which is your scariest??
paulzprz Shit...
Jon Murphy What's the scariest alien abduction movie?
Jason Richardson I thought you were going to say the March for Our Lives broadcast or CNN lmaoo

The milk is supposed to symbolize purity that's why she can move as soon as the milk touches her foot.
I’m impressed. You know your stuff, props to you! :)
We need CZs World for this!
Please keep the unknown to the unknown. I'm saying this by experience, you don't want to mess with what's on the other side.

Ivanna V it isn’t schizophrenia

The Demon must be lactose intolerance when he got touch by the milk. 😂
Doesn't want the meatball and freaked out by milk. Sounds like a crazed vegan more than a demon. Oh hell it's six of one half a dozen of the other.
Oren Januzzi illuminati confirmed
Exchanged for the soul, is to make the demon occupy the previous vessel, via invocation by the foolish little brother. The foolish little brother might had been told by the 'father' to do this. He sacrifice veronica soul for the demon. Meaning, veronica are replacing where the demon are summoned. Aether. She is there. As long the vessel still alive, she might made it back if the foolish brother resummoned her. Then, her soul might be twisted then or consumed by demons. Lol
She's died though so.........
@@scotty2hottie626 Depends on if they decide to make a sequel, alot of myths have the demon break you down mentally to make your mental barriers weak than it kills you and takes your body.

So is the demon vegetarian/vegan? Or why is it so against meatballs?
I think it's because when she fainted at the beginning of the movie after the ouija thing, the nurse told her to eat meat so she can be stronger (because she has iron deficiency) so maybe the demon doesn't want her to be stronger...
oh come on, if the demon was vegan he would be scremaing "i'M vEgAN" without us asking

Fun fact, the viking symbols of protection are called Galdrastafur
Thank you Zanar, very cool!
Norweigan if you are same
** SPOILER ALERT **
so why didn't the Galdrastafur protect her?
Zanar Naryon rasta?
Kinda where she fucked up was with the Viking "Protection symbol" Its the Runic compass a symbol more about not getting lost in travel than not been killed by demons.
I'm surprised there's not more discussion about the symbolism linking the story of Veronica and sexual abuse and intergenerational trauma. Yes you could view it as the demon possessed them and watch the movie through that scope. In parallel theres a lot of things are a hinting Veronica was sexually abused by her dad.
Spoilers
- Him appearing to her naked and forcing himself upon her.
- It could be interpreted that the kids were sexually molested as well in the bed frames and how the stains were of an adult humanoid figure spooning, sleeping with all of the children.
- The meatball scene. Her body becoming physically frozen/paralyzed and rejecting the "meatball" going into their body.
- Mom hesitant to talk about dad
You could view it as when she "realized she became a demon" herself as it could be interpreted as Veronica may have molested the siblings as what was done to her. Very unfortunate but all to common where the abused can abuse others. The kids were always talking about how "there was no else there, and it was always her that was choking them etc."
- Bed wetting is commonly seen with children that experienced some form of sexual abuse.
Wow now everything makes senses in this perspective 😰😰
no thats good, I think good horror ultimatey explores these deep and ugly realities and this is a perfect example.

"blood pooling out of her midsection"
That's not her "midsection," my dude. The mom saying "grow up" and the placement of the blood is indicative of puberty and Veronica dealing with the pains and stresses of a maturing body on top of all her other responsibilities. Poor thing needs a heating pad and some chocolate, stat!

“Based off of a true story”
And now, the story is immediately less scary.
is not even remotely similar to this, to begin with the original story starts after tje girl ( estefania, not veronica) already died. the father was not dead, and i think it was him who called the police on the night that the " happenings" became more violent. though is almost proven it was all staged by the mother who was a narcisist and very religiously obssesed.
there are even theories that the daughter was sick and died because the mother was causing the sickness to get attention and when the girl died the woman convinced her entire family she had been possesed and the demon was haubting them now to keep having attention, the rest of the family ended believing it because of colective hysteria.
so if that is all true( and it makes a lot of sense with the infor there is of that case) i would say the original story is actually scarier because of the mother being so crazy and dangerous
Not for me

Connor Hoppes Maybe if you have the critical thinking skills of a goldfish.

I thought it was because he thought it was his dad?
It could be because it came to him previously as his dad. Demons and the devil are forever hiding in the guise of others. This is why in Christianity it is forbidden to use this "game" or consult with mediums/psychics it supposedly makes u vulnerable to these entities. They pretend to be your dead loved ones to trick u. I'm Christian, I believe these thing's, I've experienced both the presence of God and these evil spirits, not like in this movie of course but I had some very strange experiences.
My Cinema History teacher on college is one of the script writers of this film, and it may be not the best Spanish film ever, even less the best horror movie, I think it's very far from being a master piece but it's quite good though. I'm very proud of my teacher and this movie ☺️ also it's beautiful to see how people could enjoy this movie all over the world
Aww ☺☺

Kris Mckay no it was in a vote and idk why but everyone seemed to want Shutter Island but MaMa won by like 35%
So veronica is the girl in the movie ,REC (Not the news reporter) but the Spanish girl who was documented in News clippings pinned to the wall that the news reporter finds in that attic room she and her cameraman fled to hiding from the other tenants who had turned into zombie like creatures.
The director decided to make Veronica sort of as a prequel to .REC
Good job
X-MISMA-X nope, the girl in REC is portuguese and her name was Tristana Medeiros
OK thanks for the info
I personally don’t think the demon is a vegetarian😂😂 I think it’s because it’s cooked meat and not raw
Finally!!! Someone with a brain, thank God 🙌 was beginning to lose hope
@@1GateWay2Heaven ew the vegetarian thing was a joke :/
“RAW!”
Demon: *Mom said it’s my turn to possess Veronica*
Calling it the “scariest film of all time” is EXTREMELY laughable. Like most rumors, apparently a few tweets from ppl that clearly aren’t horror movie enthusiasts (or have never seen a horror movie in their lives 🤦🏻♀️) said they had to turn it off midway through the movie bc they were so “terrified” caused a snowball effect. I was interested bc it had a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and that’s extremely rare, especially for a horror movie. But, idk why it had that high of a rating 🤷🏻♀️ it was a totally predictable average horror movie. (IMO)
It makes it scary cause it's a true story & that shit aint laughable.. 🙆
no offense but satan or "god" i would rather give my soul to satan... i mean come on! who doesnt want evil sith powers
