One of the major downfalls of Morecambe and the surrounding towns was when Lancaster Council took control..... The majority of any project funding was spent in and on Lancaster... Morecambe and the surrounding towns and villages were and still are neglected by Lancaster City Council.
I think there's a larger picture too because Morecambe is not an isolated case, look at other seaside/coastal towns in the UK, also look at other rural areas, part of it is that towns that were 'a place to go' like Morecambe have struggled to figure out what people want from them now the annual holiday is of an exotic affair, also combined with that it's had the same problems that any other small town in the UK has had, a high street killed by Amazon and 'all in one place' retail parks that you drive to and spend all day in. The changes in the last 40 years have come fast, true that if Lancaster spent money in Morecambe it could have adapted, but Lancaster has it's own probems, in the 80s it was pretty dead and it's only the University that has kicked life into their economy, sure over the bridge here in Morecambe we could benefit from that too, maybe that's about to happen, I'm nervous about who the winners and losers may be when/if Eden happens, but optomistic about Morecambe
I adore the town, my grandparents holidayed every year in the 60's. Independent shops, records, guitars, fish keeping to name just three. Excellent sea angling , A great football club. The live music scene is wonderful when events are on. A perfect juxtaposition to Lancaster. Lovely down to earth people. Transport links will need looking at, a tram down the old cycle path from Lancaster to Morecambe would be ideal.. will never happen..
This was so good! We loved its we've done a vlog from here and loved the feel of the place. We felt like it was on the up too. Loved Marecia, what a woman. Cool to see the pier. Great video, like a proper tv documentary. Cheers 🍻
Well, the project is happening and construction begins in November 2024 for 3 years. The town is getting ready too, lots of renovation and development already underway. The town, being at sea level, is one of the sunniest places in the UK and there’s actually lots happening locally for visitors because the parks, local rail and facilities were baked into the town as it amalgamated 3 villages and grew in the 1830s. Currently one of the biggest draws is proximate to the Lake District and affordable high quality accommodation. It’s a super-friendly place too. Absolutely love living here, a sunny oasis with spectacular views.
For the sake of Morecambe, I do so hope that the Eden Project comes to fruition and as quickly as possible. It did not bode well when The Project declined to make a comment.
superb! glad to read here that it will become and longer version, for it left me wanting to see and hear more, and yes !! I was paying attention to the music, which won a prize , and was enjoying it a lot !!! congrats on the good adventures the film and you are going through! may your filming life continue to bloom. love from Buenos Aires
One decent high tide will do a lot of damage . I remember there used to be some unbelievable storms , i know they put a wall up but building so close to the bay, Good luck .
I know Morecambe very well I was born there in 1940, my father had a hotel on Sea View Parade from 1933 till 1976, I worked and lived there, it was extremely busy especially the Wakes holidays, they blame foreign holidays for its decline but another reason was people could afford cars and changed to having days out, I still visit as I’ve moved all the way to Lancaster.
Great film; i thought it was a terrible loss to the town when the former Frintierland theme park was closed. Anither historic amusement psrk demolished, including a classic wooden roller coaster, Texás Tornado (Cyclone). I visited in Summer 1987 but very regrettably never ventured inside as the coaster didn't look very attractive driving past the park boundaries. Apparently it was sunk into the landscape so its height was deceving. I've seen recent park revivsl plans in rhe media. Hopefully they will come to fruition to bring much needed tourism back to the area.
