- Baseball rookie cards can be confusing. There are so many different sets that it can be difficult to know what to target. In this video I break down the best baseball rookie card sets when buying a player for your pc. These sets are the ones that I personally target and view as a priority to my pc when I am looking to add cards to my collection.
One note: We all have different opinions on what the top 5 rookie cards are, and that is okay. There are many amazing sets and rookies out there. Let me know which sets I may have forgotten!

Those Heritage refractors are what got me into baseball cards. Pulled a red one and was so in love w the look of it.. they are still my favorite type of card/set/parallel.

Good stuff my friend. I am glad to see topps decided to give us a teeny tiny bit of uniformity by using the 2022 topps chrome short print images in Ben baller and in sonic for JROD, Witt, Tork, etc.
I could certainly agree with most of this. Although I gotta admit that I still really dig the Topps flagship red and orange foil parallels. In fact, just picked up an orange foil parallel of a top rookie.
Ya and who cares if vintage stock or advanced stat cards don't have a noticeable parallel. Their values are good.
Hey guys thanks for watching. I am not saying they are inherently bad, but rather they generally have a lower ceiling. The foils, advanced stats, and vintage stocks are much more valuable than the base and even the gold, but the other parallels are more sought after. In the long run is where I am looking, and the more traditional parallels will win out.
If you love the foils and believe in them then don't be afraid to pick them up. They are great looking cards!

Good stuff as usual Scottie! I agree with you on Golds and lower...but let's be real...even on non auto stuff, they can still be pretty expensive. What I was buying back from 18 was gold shimmers. They used to cost less than blue but was 3x as scarce...I couldn't understand when the OG bowman guys would tell me shimmers and waves are garbage....numbered is numbered. I'll buy gold shimmer acunas and sotos all day at half the price of blue! Keep on doing what u do brother
collector preferences are fine, but buy what you can afford. I go after Topps chrome update refractors and xfractors because it's in my budget

Definitely from an investment standpoint agree but from a collectibility standpoint I prefer flagship and sp's from those sets. With the flagship golden ssp's taking sp's out of print, hall of fame and traditional rookie SP's will definitely be worth collecting just from nostalgia standpoint alone.

I think some of the foil parallels from newer sets like 2022 and 2023 look really good if you have the right player and image.
I totally agree. They look awesome, but I am just concerned about the long term value since collectors like traditional colors. They will have value compared to the base and even the golds, but I think in the long run there will be a big price difference between the foils and the more traditional colors. Thanks for watching!
Great list! My opinion, there are too many parallel sets and too many subsets and it's gotten ridiculous.
As a Blue Jays fan I usually target the blues for obvious beautiful color matched reasons.

I think with more time Topps Chrome Black should be up there. Aside from Sapphire they are just stunning in every way IMO. Not to mention the QC on them seems to be much better with the matte finish being less susceptible to issues.
The top rookie cards to invest in are imo vintage only because they're far less volatile than the new stuff that's overprinted. Even the ones who aren't have lost a lot of money the last few years, especially in ultra modern. I can buy proven HOF players for less so why risk thousands on guys who's career could be over tomorrow. If buying modern at all, I'd rather steer to Bowman Chrome 1st cards. Lower cost and less fluctuation of price.

Green to 99 and Blue to 150 are some of my favorite parallels to collect. Not as good as gold for sure but they are less expensive

What do you think about gold foils in 2023 series 1? With them being jumbo only there’s only around 1250 per player compared to 2023 normal golds yet they go for half the price
2022 topps archives julio rodriguez rc #375 is a 2005 style draft pick or intl signing card looks sick and is very low printed. not a lot of people know about this card also all the other players like Bobby Witt JR also have this card :)

I was just wondering if you could address either here in the comments section or put it in a video the significance of the 2022 topps update Meijer paper (non chrome) purple variation of the J-Rod RC, as opposed to the actual topps chrome purple RC which they made a lot of I believe since they made a lot of Topps chrome this year. Both are not number but it would be interesting to see how many paper purples parallels there are compared to the chrome purple parallels. Also maybe even the rainbow foils. Hey Scottie so read a thing about jumbo boxes in Topps series 1 being packed with stuff compared to blasters and hangers is that also what you have heard or saw. I love opening retail but might just buy jumbo box here and there
Ya they changed things like it use to be one gold card every 4 packs and now it's one gold every 20 packs. They made the odds way higher for all good parallels. So basically you'll almost never get your value in hanger packs and blasters for topps now. They're trying to push people to buy jumbo and hobby boxes.

Go back to 90s with cards and the expensive brands back then with football and baseball not the sets everyone wanted after the boom. For some reason the cheapo Topps did very well.
I agree on most of this and is almost exactly what I collect so wish u would have kept it secret n let everyone buy them sparkle cards. But yes the true red, orange, gold r better I think the waves are just about equal. Bowman best is something I don’t chase personally

Hey Scottie - I bought / pulled some rainbow foil & some gold foil flagship rookie cards from Topps update. I didn't hear you mention them. Do you think they will be good holds? I know they aren't numbered but there are much less of them than the "bronze" aka gold numbered to 2022. Curious what you think. Thanks for the video!

I knew a Mookie mention was coming! Have to disagree on vintage stock, I like them because /99 is a fairly low number and the retro Topps logo is more noticeable than advanced stats. I also like the look of the card stock , up close you can see the fibers. So at least vintage stock > advanced stats in my opinion. thanks for sharing your opinion, enjoy your videos.

What about topps chrome black from the 2000s to early 2010s they sell for good money. Collectors love them.
I think those are great as well. The numbered black, atomic, and xfractors are awesome. This is more of a list for ultra modern sets. Cards change so fast over different decades. Thanks for watching Dave!

How come not as high on flagship foil cards? Personally I really like how they look. Am I in the minority for that?
The flagship foils are great cards, but they were introduced in 2021 and are numbered quite highe than traditional flagship cards (outside of golds of course). I think they are great cards and they look awesome, but I always tend to go with the classic parallels to be safe.

Haha I do not have one, but if I did, I would obviously love it! I like Vintage stock myself, but they just never seem to get the same value multiplier as the others. One of my favorite cards I ever owned was a Ronald Acuna jr 2018 Topps Update Vintage Stock, and for some reason I had the hardest time moving it. Thanks for watching!

Are base rc's just never going to have any value anymore. There are way too many parallels.
Hey David, I am guessing for some years the base will have value and other years where the print runs are higher they will be a little watered down. At the end of the day cards are expensive and base cards are a great way for people to still enjoy the hobby. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Scottie! It's just tough as a collector I dont have a lot of access to hobby packs in my small town and buying online is just way too overpriced. So blasters and megas are what I get and the odds most of the time are horrible.

This video is not particular to any given player. Like I mention in the video, every player has unique circumstances where this might not always be the case. Julio is a good example of that, but most other rookies this still applies. Please watch that other video to see my thoughts.

Hi Scott, The point of this video is to teach people that are newer or returning to the hobby what the best cards are. There are over 70 Topps sets and it is confusing for a lot of people. While it may be obvious to you and I there are still tons of people that do not know this information.
