The only explanation I’ve ever been able to figure out for that plot thread is that Riku must be like Speedwagon in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, who claimed evil has a distinctive smell (or something).
Possibility another thing forgotten in the code.remember that square somehow forgets or leave things and unfinished assets in the data of different games.like look at the original ff7.if you use a certain code in ff7.it will take you to a debug room where you can see the different character models or see a test battle area
It could be an exception thrown when the game can't find any text. I would be really concerned though if that was the case. There would've been hell to pay if an "I'm tingling all over" error was accidentally left in the game's story dialogue at launch, so it isn't likely. Does this glitch exist in the ps2 version? Oddly enough all dialogue is fine at first, but after picking your evidence box and the queen says "What in the world was that" then everything goes weird. The dialogue starts to auto skip, so some of it I never even got to read, but here are the lines I did get to read and note these are all back to back. Queen: A mysterious painting. The painting changed. Donald: The tea party has been ruined. Queen: Those who helped clean up will receive a reward. The cutscene then plays showing the cage and the tower, then the fight with the cards where you have to destroy the tower, and after that's all over there is some more weird dialogue. Donald: Map Jump Test Before fighting the queen After fighting the queen Queen: Set for before fighting the queen Set for after fighting the queen Talking to any NPC after this will give the same sort of weirdness shown in the video, though I especially love the queen's line "Obtained e" lol.
The softlock makes a lot of sense. Since the text is offset, any selection will attempt to call up the correct dialog afterwards, and since it technically doesn't exist with this bug, it doesn't proceed any further. Haven't tested it myself, but does this only happen with the HD versions, since KH1 was rebuilt from the ground up again? It would make sense some more bugs found their way in.

Perhaps the journal modified the text strings contained in memory, which these prompts read from or changed their pointer addresses (ie which 'points' to memory address rather than storing the string itself.
I encountered a similar bug in Olympus Coliseum on my previous playthrough of KH1 on the 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix. It happened during the cutscene that triggers when you talk to Phil after attempting to push the block in the Coliseum lobby. Just like here, the subtitles where replaced with those from a different cutscene, and it also resulted in the game freezing during the cutscene, forcing me to soft-reset the game.
There’s actually another way for this, i was playing through this and after the castle minigame, (or whatever you call it) my text just broke randomly. “Learned White Trinity” and “Found Dalmations No. 0, No. 0, and No. 0” kinda cool though
Imagine if it actually effects your item inventory, where you can just get anything with the glitch, like magic being upgraded to the max by just talking to people, or getting a ton of items immediately. Yeah, the game breaks up a shit ton by doing that, but it’d still be pretty cool if you could just do that no problem
