    Hi everyone. You can really help me out and my channel out by taking a moment and watching my new video from yesterday that TH-cam didn't send notifications on. It's a really awesome $40 deck tech with a fun potential turn 2 kill, and it got totally thrown in the garbage by TH-cam. So if you didn't already take a moment to watch it, it would help so much if you did so now: th-cam.com/video/Pun-et4nIP0/w-d-xo.html

      honestly, yes, as someone who doesn't play at all and doesn't know anything about the game (don't ask me what I'm doing here watching the video, apparently it went from D&D lore, to MTG lore, to rule explanations to this while I was cleaning the kitchen. Came back to this.)
      I might have bought it for friends who play...it just...looks like a lot of cards, while booster packs always look so tiny. I'd assume that if it's a real product Wizards of the coast put out, it can't be that bad.

      The ONLY reasonable excuse to check the MtG section of a big box store is when the Commander decks come out, they usually don't weight the prices based on contents, so you can find them at MSRP if you're lucky/fast. That's it. That's the only reason.

      Or pay 11 less dollars and get an actual Deckbuilders Toolkit, which I personally think isn't the worst product out there for newer players (i actually got a second to complete the sets of dual lands). And then buy 2 more packs if you insist on spending that 11 bucks on magic product, or get some lunch !

    • @heliosretro4545
      @heliosretro4545 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Arghore i actually buy deckbuilders toolkits every time a new one comes out, i genuinely think theyre worth the money to a degree, but it depends on what exactly is in them, and that varies a lot.

    • @Arghore
      @Arghore 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heliosretro4545 Every time would be a bit to much for my taste, but i do think starting players can't do much wrong by buying two of them at the start of their collection.
      First off the boxes are great. The lands are also mighty fine (because those can actually be a bit hard to come by if you assume buying packs is how you start a deck). Also 4x evolving wilds or equivalent, and the tapped dual lands. Which make two color budget decks work. And all of those easily make their way into more budget EDH decks.
      Also think that for regular (non core) sets, there is generally a 'shell' of cards in them that coincide with the most obvious draft synergies, especially when combined with a draft one can end up with a deck that at least functions on synergy level. Where the power level easily exceeds planeswalker decks, while obviously not being competitive.
      BUT, if you have (a) friend(s) to play with, and they all get a starter kit, combined with the free decks, perhaps do a draft or pre-release in a shop. There can be a fairly wide variety (say up to 5 different styles) of decks emerging from it, that are fun to play against each other.

    Completely agree. I will give my my experience with the Walmart mystery boxes. I first saw them at Walmart maybe 2 years ago. I ignored them for obvious reasons, but I ran across a youtube video from a channel called bad boy gaming who mentioned getting a box full of foil lands and another with a commander deck and mentioned the weight being a key thing to look for. I ended up buying some 6 months ago; one in Hutto TX, two in Round Rock, TX.
    Two of them had the Swell the Host Commander deck in it (Ezuri Claw of Progress precon). The third had nothing but basic lands in it, though there was a single foil of each color amongst them. The Commander decks I was able to part out for about 85 dollars per deck and I sold the 5 foil lands for about $2 a piece. I don't remember the weights off the top of my head, but I just took them to the food scales and weighed about 7 at one location across a couple visits and 3 at the other location and I bought the heaviest 3.
    Unless you've got a system where someone reputable has done the legwork, I would avoid these like the plague.

    I can say from experience, these DO still sometimes contain commander decks, but VERY rarely. Within the last year or so, I've managed to pick up one containing Feline Ferocity (Commander 2017), and one containing Adaptive Enchantment (Commander 2018). The trick is to look for blocks of cards that are noticeably larger than the rest, and most importantly, to tilt the box in order to separate the various "decks" and check the name of the face card with your phone's flashlight. The professor is 100% right that the vast majority of these boxes are borderline worthless, but in my opinion it's always worth it to just check. Getting a commander deck (even the lackluster 2018 ones) plus a couple packs for $30 ain't half bad if you're lucky enough to find one. They may be rare, but so long as commander decks keep getting damaged in transport, or ripped open by kids in the store, Target is always going to have some number of decks without packaging that they still want to sell, and these boxes are where they're gonna end up. And just in case it wasn't clear enough, NEVER buy one without being sure of what's inside.

    I went Christmas shopping with a friend last year, and he saw these at Target. He asked what I thought, if it would be a good fit for a friend of his that know and don't like. I EMPHATICALLY urged him to buy it. Even told him it's all pure schlock, but that it would be great to see this guy open this box and get garbage.
    It was great.

If it was a recent location change and you are looking for game stores I can recommend experience point for the cheapest singles, red castle games for the best edh on Thursdays, and then Gaurdian games for fnm. Im sure you have been to Gaurdian though. Cheers!

    - A dog bed with no stuffing
    - Half a block of cheese
    - A cat crocheted out of cat hair

    - A $1 bill
    - Rocks

    - A really good euphemish

    I would like to adreess this with a small story a friend of mine told me. One of the biggest board game stores in the country, positioned in the capital, once had too much stuff in their storage. You know what they did? They announced that they were giving away old stuff for dead low prices. 0.5 euros for 6 mtg booster packs, 30 euros for 3 warhammer boxes. Abominus products like this, for me, turn the game into a game with lootboxes. With luck you could get something out of them, but then ask yourselves if it is worth the money you are paying?

      It really wasn't a similar product. For starters it was at Walmart. It was 230+ cards packaged in a sturdy acrylic box and it was just loose enough for you to peek inside because they were aware of what they were selling and wanted to clearance that shit, not rip you off. It was also almost three years ago. The clearance items are gone. All that's left is bad intentions and people who buy shit you get for free because they think themselves to smart to get got.

It had 1 pack of ultimate masters, 1 pack of unstable, 1 pack of M19, and 1 pack of Guilds of Ravnica. I pulled a Demonic Tutor, an Unstable Forest, a Crucible of Worlds, and a Breeding Pool. I was pretty happy. It was definitely out there because it got lost in the back somewhere and I miraculously came at the right time. Best time was when I opened a foil Brimaz, foil Ashiok (Theros set), and foil Dragonlord Ojutai. I didn’t buy anymore after that because they discontinued it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better than what they’re spewing nowadays.

    My best find in these boxes was a Yidris deck, and a Saheeli the gifted deck. You can find good stuff, you just have to know what you are looking for. I got one of the Khans duel decks that had a collected company and a windswept Heath. I don’t disagree with the video, but I have a different (recent) personal experience. The reason I pick these is because of the crappy SEE THROUGH case, so you can generally tell what you are going to get.

    I have a theory about this: The retailer/retailers ship product that has been rifled through, opened and plundered by thieves, returned to the store without packaging to this company (excell marketing LC) and they package it and distribute what they have back to the stores. I used to deal with vendors for returns daily and a lot of companies don’t like giving money back to retailers if the product was tampered with. So in terms of BOTTOM LINE, that’s what Target is doing. Trying to get their bottom line back to where it should be, albeit with shady packaging and practices.

    As you say, "in the past", and indeed, in the past these had EDH decks in them. I would never get one that I couldn't see had a 100 card deck in it.

    If only there wasn't a great stigma on giving cash for birthdays and holidays. As many below have articulated perfectly, the biggest problem is that loved ones think: "Oh, they like this card game called Magic. Here I am at Target, and here are some of those magic card things. I'll get it for them, because I care about them" And little do they know, they would have been better just giving that loved one the 30 bucks.

    When I was a wee lad, back in the early 2000s, the FLGS sold just random monocolor decks they made out of older jank or whatever.
    They were like five bucks. The monowhite one I bought once was full of weenies with Banding, and two of the "Gain life when you take damage this turn" instants.
    Also all of the lands were Snow-Covered Plains, which I seem to have misplaced somewhere over the years.
    So I'm pretty sure nowadays there'd be more value in that crappy $5 plastic box than in this thing.

  • @FrankHunt4

    The products you find at the big box stores is considered vendor-managed. One meaning of that term is the product is brought into the store by the vendor and managed by them, rather than owned by the retailer and shipped in through their own network. This concept is what allows the garbage products at garbage prices to be on the shelf.

  • @krvys7226
    @krvys7226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The worst part is, in concept, this CAN be a good idea and done well.
    The idea is the distributors need to downsize old or slightly damaged product from shipping. This could be done at a bulk deal with these companies like target or Walmart.
    The issue is, they vastly overassume the value of parts of the product, and what makes the product sell for what it does. They don't even understand the game in most cases, likely assuming those were ready to play decks.
    It can be designed well. Packaging some of the slurry with something of value,and figuring out a price to sell the bundle at. Some would be less valuable then asking price, (most likely) but with the occasional one that is more. It could never be an A+ product, but if designed right, it could be serviceable, unlike this.
    The issue is they don't know how to design the product, because that takes time. And time is money.

    Yeah, these packs are just a bunch of the unsold items, however the Target near me had different content in all available packs. The best I found included 4 seperate booster packs from 4 different lines, I did see some with Core 2019 packs, but most packs were from other lines. But, yeah, those are only $4... So even in the pack with 4, your still only at $16. Most other options had 3 booster packs in them, there was only one with (4). But, even then I couldn't justify the price.
