This is something I actually have an answer for! I work at a distributor who puts together these sorts of packs. Essentially how these come to be is through old stock. Distributors have skids and skids of old product that never sold and their way of selling them is to repackage them and sell them for cheap to places like target, Walmart, toy r us etc. The distributors seldom know what they are putting in the packages and seldom know the value whatsoever. They just view it as old dusty merchandise of fat packs and blisters in which they can blast open, grab the packs and make some money with no regard to how the value might appear to an actual Magic the Gathering Player. Sometimes they're great! Most of the time they're not! The trick is going regularly and seeing what stock they've decided as stagnant at the time. Keeping in mind too that one target might get all Zendikar packs while another might get all Theros. The promo cards are generally from a supply of old cards meant to be given out at time of release through a local RETAIL game store (video game store that sells a little Magic for example) and can be liquidated through these packs given that they don't sell individual cards.
Thanks for the insight! This is great information. It makes a ton of sense that they would be somewhat grouped together in single stores or single waves.
they are still selling these a year later at the BX on my military base... in south korea. They all have that exact same promo card. Doesn't make sense for it to be old stock all the way over here and it seems odd that it would be the exact same promo card all this time later.

I bought one with a Thalia’s Lieutenant promo that had an Innistrad, Theros & Eldritch Moon in the packs. Pulled a Foil Whip Of Erebos & Endless Ranks Of The Dead. Was a happy go fun fun for sure.
I've had decent luck with these, too. I don't recall any of my pulls in particular, but I remember when the promo was that Hydra from Kaladesh, the one that produced energy tokens. That card saw tons of play in its time in Standard, and it felt great getting a shiny promo for the trade binder. And that in addition to packs I was going to buy anyway. Good times. 😎

I randomly bought one of these at a Rite-Aid Pharmacy while on a trip for work just because I wanted to open a few packs. Sometimes you just need to crack some packs.
My local pharmacy sells these packs. Ive gotten Darksteel, Mirrodin, Apocalypse, Time Spiral, Prophecy, Kamigawa. And more. Definitely worth it in my opinion. With my pharmacy card I pay $9.37.
All MTG packs are color coded with the addition of one of the set's card's artwork on the front, which usually bleeds onto the sides.. Just look at the side and figure out what 3 sets they're from... *Easy!*

Happy happy go fun funs are something I get kinda regularly. when my girlfriend and I go to target, sometimes we'll pick a pair of these up (and yes, we look to see if there's any particularly valuable packs/promos), and then do a chaos winston when we get home. They're a lot of fun for that.
I like these for chaos drafts. Everybody brings one of these, keeps the promo (but doesn't get to play it) and drafts the packs they find inside in order from top to bottom. We haven't encountered any apocalypse packs--everything's been Return to Ravnica or later, but $12 for a promo and three conveniently randomized packs is decent for chaos drafting and everyone gets to walk away with a promo.
Despite probably not being able to get these in my country, this video makes me sorely curious about the Happy Happy go Fun Funs, and, now that I know they exist, might genuinely consider buying one if I could. Another great video!
When I was actively getting back into the game these products were my lifeblood. Finding all kinds of odd packs and getting sweet promos was a great way to fuel my lust for silly EDH nonsense. It’s been awhile and still it’s largely Dragon’s Maze and Theros block packs, but every so often there’s a gem and it’s worth it. Definitely one of the best multipack items you can buy at MSRP.

I played MTG from Fallen Empires to 7th Edition. I came back during Hour of Devastation. I bought 7 of these so far to catch me up on cards and mechanics I'd missed while I was away. Shadows Over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon are the oldest sets I've seen so far. As promos, I have 2 Atarka, World Renders, 4 Bristling Hydras, and 1 Kari Zev. The only M19 pack I've opened to date had a Liliana, Untouched by Death Planeswalker. Big thumbs up from me.
I decided to buy one at target out of the blue. I could see it had a Dominaria, Guilds of Ravnica and a Rivals of Ixalan. I didn’t get anything good in two out of the tree back but in my Ixalan pack had an Imortal sun card. It was pretty nice to pull something that nice on a first by. I will most likely by this again and it do like his idea about doing chaos drafts with them. I do wish they would change up the promo a bit.
I think the grade was a little too cautious. Then again, I got stars in my eyes when you said Apocalypse because I built a five color domain jank from Invasion block and loved it dearly. I one day aim to reassemble it.
These are literally one of the only ways we can get packs where I live - we have no FLGS closer than 45 minutes away, and for a lot of the kids I work with, this is how they have to buy them. From RiteAid. Because the only place that carries Magic is a pharmacy. That's why I run Magic events at the library.
I have bought these (or at least very similar things) for years when I see a pack in them that I don't immediately recognise as a current set. I even found one that had a fallen empires pack. It had no real value, but it was cool
I've seen hundreds of these things and the oldest pack I've ever found in one was a Core Set 2014. I've seen a few videos of ones that had Apocalypse packs in them, but never actually found one myself. They are usually all recent sets. The Prof was extremely lucky to find four apocalypse packs like that.
If my memory serves right, Excel staffs people to stock shelves at retail stores like Walmart and Target . So my thoughts are they are trying to clear out old inventory unsold in Excel's warehouses that they accumulated, while maybe not trying to be too much on the radar. Just my guess
Ive used these more then once for chaos drafts. Sometimes the local store doesnt keep old sets on the shelf. Because you can see the packs ot makes it easy to get a random variety
Just went to several Targets near me, only one had this product. All 10 available sets were Dominaria, Rivals of Ixalan, and Guilds of Ravnica, plus the Lathliss promo. Still better than the $30 clear box with 2 (2!!) outward facing welcome packs.
I bought one of these at target awhile back. Mine had Eldritch Moon, Theros, and Dominaria in it, with Atarka instead of Lathliss. I don't actually remember what I pulled from it but since I enjoy cracking packs, I think the $12+tax I spent was worth it on its own. Never thought of using it for chaos draft, though. Might have to get some friends together for that.
I bought a few of these from Rite-Aid's in my area. Best pull was a Mox Amber from a Dominaria pack. A couple of them had Betrayers of Kamigawa packs in them, which was very nostalgic for me, as that was the current block when I started playing mtg.
I love your objectivity here prof! One suggestion may be to tell us where does the promo came from. Is it from a bad product that didn't sell or it's something new? That may help us understand where does this come from
I once bought a pair of similar products at Gamestop once and both included Theros, Original Innistrad, and Worldwake for the same price. I'll never forget the massive value.
These use to be at Walmart years ago (here in Canada). Me and a friend bought some, he asked which one i thought he should get, i told him the package that contained two packs of Innistrad...... he pulled a Liliana of the Veil
They also sell these at Rite Aid, and as a new player, I've found these as a great way to go a little deeper into Magic's history, although the latest one I've gotten were from recent sets (Core 20, Ikoria and Theros BD.) I did find Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger last time, so I'd say it's worth it.
Target employee and purchaser of these. From my knowledge it's a product that comes from the company, MJ Holdings, that stock them. I have no idea what it's called or how they decide packs. I bought one with 2 darksteel packs in it.
Rite Aid has these as well. I find these fun, it's like buying a booster with boosters in it, since you get double the random and surprises. In March 2020 featured Ravnica Alliance, Guilds of Ravnica and one of the Ixilan expansions, and this dragon. In May/June 2020 it featured Ravnica Alliance, M19, M20. And looks like they were finally running out of stock of this dragon and started liquidating their supply of some green hydra that gives energy counters.
A target by me had similar "Happy Happy Go Fun Funs" which I picked up for chaos drafts. There were a couple Apocalypse at mine as well as several Torments, a Scourge, and a couple Onslaught. The ones at mine also had 4 packs for $20, and the packs were displayed more prominently to tell what all 4 packs were. Also, buyer beware: I've read stories of these being resealed packs. Mine were not, buy it's something to be wary of.
I picked one of these up for fun right after Guilds dropped, and it was literally like a ravnica Chaos draft kit. It had RtR, Guilds of Ravnica , and Dissension. Can confirm, these actually arent that bad if you're into chaos drafts.
So, back around scars block, I would buy these as a way to get worldwake packs because you couldn't find them anywhere else (for around the cost of a booster pack). Haven't bought one in a long time though, so it was nice to see that theyre still around
And all of a sudden I wish we still had a Target around here. Though I guess whether I bought any depends on whether or not they'd have packs from Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, Eventide, &/or Morningtide.
My first thought at these was that most of the old packs were probably *scalped* already and resealed but from the comments and looks of it, I guess lots of old product got recirculated without people really checking the value, so some gold nuggets managed to make their way back into the market. Interesting
I remember buying these types of products back in the day around the rtr block and getting packs of rise of the eldrazi, innistrad and avacyn restored in these
All the Timmies at Target this week at customer service desk asking where they can find the happy happy go fun fun's. Target desk persons looking bewildered as usual.
Wow. I’ve found these at my local target, but I’ve never received any Apocalypse packs from my Happy Happy Go Fun Fun packs. Also, GameStop used to have them listed on their website for $5.50. And as Target does price matching with GameStop’s website, you used to be able to buy them for that price instead of $12...
I've just been calling these things three-packs. I've had pretty decent luck with them, too. They're where I got my Chandra, Flamecaller; Kozilek, the Great Distortion; Kruphix, God of Horizons; and a bunch of promo cards including 2 Angelic Skirmisher; 2 Angel of Glory's Rise; Atarka, World Render; Genesis Hydra; Hamletback Goliath; Outland Colossus; and Thalia's Lancers. Those are the cards I'm sure of.
I've got to admit, I could see myself picking a couple of these up for the nostalgia of cracking old sets I used to play if at least two of the packs were from the Urza era of sets. Even if I got nothing super valuable, there's a decent chance of getting something with cool artwork for a cube, and $12 isn't a huge amount to gamble for fun.
My local target doesn't have these products (At least they didn't when I was in there december 2018). It has giant clear-plastic boxes with what looks like 3 or 4 decks in it, at least 2 promos and 3 packs for 29.99. They're completely clear and you can flop them around to try and see what the decks are. I most distinctly remember a Hydra Broodmaster clashpack promo, 2 JOU and 1 SOI packs, and with what looked like Zendikar VS Eldrazi and Heroes vs monsters. It didn't seem like the worst deal, but I ultimately passed it up.
Wouldn't it be awesome if next time you walked into target to look for these they were in the same type of package but instead of black it was all glitter and rainbows and it said "HAPPY HAPPY GO FUN FUN!" on it?
I've been buying these from Target when available for a few years now. Best old stuff I've gotten was one with 2 packs of Unhinged (the full-art lands more than paid for it by themselves IIRC).
We have a similar product in yugioh, it's basically an interesting way to get potentially older cards. Ours are distributed by fairfield, and they also do packs of 25 cards plus one foil (which are usually not worth it and can have unplayable cards or cards with other languages) and a sort of "cube" with a sealed deck, 4 booster packs, and some promo cards, which I actually enjoy because again, you're getting sealed, usually older, cards at or below retail price
I remember seeing these type of packs in Wal-mart around 2014/15. They had a couple (or a few) of choices of promo cards. I bought one with Hamletback Goliath, cause I thought he was sweet for Commander. I had just started getting into Commander at the time. I never saw any old packs from old-bordered sets, it was always stuff like Dragon's Maze, Born of the Gods, and I think Theros. They still are a decent deal for new players, and for the fun of it. These promos, with the 5 mana symbols water mark, are, to my knowledge, only sold in these packs and are known as resale promos.
Target used to do a four pack blister that had either Odyssey or onslaught before they did the three packs. Last two I got were mirrodan besieged and scars of mirrodan. Got lucky and opened an inkmouth Nexus.

Huwaow, mystery product not reviewed as trash? Glad to see that this aspect is moving up... But I'll go to my LGS :)
LGS is the way to go, always, since they actually promote play
But yeah, it is cool to see that there are actual good product out there too
I have bought these (or at least very similar things) for years when I see a pack in them that I don't immediately recognise as a current set.
Okay, but... 1:17 can we talk about how smooth this was?
Ive used these more then once for chaos drafts. Sometimes the local store doesnt keep old sets on the shelf. Because you can see the packs ot makes it easy to get a random variety
The Professor is the best! Met him in Vegas a few years ago and he was nothing but nice. He inspired me to actually start making TH-cam videos.
Hey thanks! Feel free to check out my channel if you get bored :D
Selflessly commenting on my own channel's comment to help boost it's visibility. Welcome to 2019 youtube.
The professor really needs to bring back happy happy go fun fun. It's one of his best created terms.
That may help us understand where does this come from
Mine had two Future Sight boosters :)
Goddamn
I think of them as "warehouse liquidation repacks."
An actual proper mystery box deal? This is truly the future
I love how honest the professor is.
One time I purchased a blind bag and inside I got a divining top! These can have some decent value, sometimes just gotta go with the try
I was very happy grabbing one yesterday that had 3 standard packs
So, back around scars block, I would buy these as a way to get worldwake packs because you couldn't find them anywhere else (for around the cost of a booster pack). Haven't bought one in a long time though, so it was nice to see that theyre still around
They are also sold at rite aid. I recently purchased a few and they had darksteel packs in them. I pulled two swords from them. I was happy with them.
Last week Walgreens had BOGO for Ravinca Allegiance.
Yeah, I got two Planeswalker decks BOGO. One was new enough (Vraska) to get the Magic Arena code.
@@prinnyblackblade nice!
Yeah I saw that, and just like everything else that is worth a crap it was out of stock the entire time... P
I'd love to see WotC doing something similar to this for LGS's. I love Chaos drafting but I'd much rather purchase my packs at my LGS than Target
I bought one of these one a whim a while ago, the packs were 1 Dominaria, 1 Battlebond, and 1 Masters 25.
Yep I had battlebond and masters 25 in my 2
We have a similar product in yugioh, it's basically an interesting way to get potentially older cards.
I got one of these for the pretty dragon on the front, it came with an Amunket pack, pretty sweet.
