How To Fix A Stuck Spring Button On A Shade Tent

  • If you have a collapsable sun shade tent or other fold-up product, and the sprung peg gets stuck in its hole, here is how to fix it. The peg is attached to a u-shaped spring, so you just need to push something down the tube to move the push pin back into place. Different products work differently, but this worked well on my pop-up shade tent.

    Thank you so much for this video!! After a whole year of putting a stick in there and I finally put my tent away and bought a cheaper/smaller one but it was not the same. Today I finally fixed my tent thanks to you. Now my Face Painting events will pop with my original tent and new pink cover. 🎉

    Thanks so much! First I called Coleman and after getting all my information for marketing purposes, I suppose, they looked on their parts list. Didn't find it and agreed I should just return it. So then I checked TH-cam! Mine had fallen below the hole, so I used a very small bungee cord to hook it and pull it up. I can see what the problem is... when people have trouble getting them to lock it's only instinct to push on the button to see if it's functioning correctly. Problem is, you just push it in a little too far and if it slides up or down, it can't come back out. What I was slow to learn is that to get them to lock you don't push as would seem logical. Instead you simply have four people (two if you don't have four) pull the corner poles outward and the poles slide up and lock. Thanks again!

    My top piece did not come off. Plan B was to drill a whole on the opposite side where the button clip had fallen, then use two small computer screwdrivers to poke/rotate it back into place. Worked great!

    I've been fumbling with this thing for a while. I was able to use a couple of paper clips to retrieve the button and spring but can't seem to get it to remain in position in order to get the button back in the hole. I need to keep the spring compressed while sliding it down the tube but that doesn't seem to be possible with the distance of the hole from the tube opening.

      You could use an old house key or a screwdriver, or maybe even one of those metal button pushers that they were selling during the pandemic.

    I believe I discovered the cause of the problem, the reason people are pushing the buttons in too far in the first place! Stop the video at the VERY beginning, and you will see the button sticking out of the post as it should be. But notice the slots in the side of the button. It's just a flat piece of metal pressed into a button shape, and that leaves slots in the side. At the front end of the slots, toward the tip of the button, the metal can "bunch up" and this causes the button to stick. It's my theory that it's when the buttons stick that people mess with them and inadvertently stick them in too far! In my earlier post, I said that I dropped a small bungee cord inside, hooked the button device, pulled it out, pushed it in properly and fixed the problem. But the problem came back, and this time I discovered that the button was sticking. I filed the "bunched up" metal at the tip of the slot, reinstalled it and it works perfectly. The other buttons all have this rough spot, but still work. They will probably only get better as they wear. But if a button is sticking, you could probably file the sides at the slot without removing it.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Christensen you are correct. It is definitely from people pushing the buttons in too far. A lot of people will use a car key to push the button in, and it goes in too far. I think it was designed to be pushed with your finger.

    • @peterchristensen9585
      @peterchristensen9585 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, but I believe I have found the reason they do that and explained how to correct the problem.
