From Homelessness Back To Hasidic Judaism: The Story of Meilech Kohn
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 มิ.ย. 2023
- Meilech Kohn, originally named Elimeilech Kohn, grew up in a Satmar family residing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He is the first cousin of renowned singer Lipa Schmeltzer.
Although he initially distanced himself from the Hasidic community of his upbringing, he later returned to it during his adult years. This personal journey is reflected in his music, which encompasses a diverse range of influences such as Techno music, Mediterranean pop, hints of trip-hop, and the melodic tapestry woven from a life enriched by travel, attentive listening, and emotional vulnerability.
In 2016, he achieved unexpected success with his popular song "VeUhavata," propelling him from relative obscurity to fame.
Meilech has been homeless, divorced, and running away from his community for many years and his story of teshuva is one of a kind.

“Money, you can’t take it with you, but you can send it ahead.” - Meilech’s Dad
When he said that you can just get a good idea of what type of man he was. To show respect for someone even before them showing the type of character they have gives you a basis to build on instead of having a negative attitude to judge first then trust afterwards if nothing goes wrong. Love first is something i value. Not saying be reckless and blind to the danger but if possible do i extend trust first or hold people in the penalty box as a start?
Wow, this interview completely changed my impression of Meilech. I did not think very highly of him before, and now I am extremely impressed by his depth and sincerity. Amazing!!!

I want to highlight Reb Meilech's refusal to blame his rebbeim. "Everyone gets up in the morning wanting to be a good influence." "Everything happens the way it needs to." He gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. Which is very special.

AMAZING!! I remember seeing him first time at "A Matter of Fax in Manhattan. His brother Moshe ate with us sometimes before he moved to LA. What an inspirational journey!
P.s. please erase the Satmar comment about Williamsburg. There's also Pupa, Klauzenberg Viznitz, Vienna etc
I think what he meant is who has the "power". Satmar has the "power".
❤❤❤
🥰🥰🥰
Such a holy soul, was taken to the abyss in order to be a role model that there's no yi'ush. מי כעמך ישראל
WOWOWOWOWOW!
Thanks Ruchie!!!
He should reach out to Joseph Kraus who left kiryas yoel and was interviewed by Andrew.
So is Meilech a Satmar today or some other sort of chasidus?

I didn't understand anything about what we all wanted to hear about.
"It happened so quickly," "I was on the streets," "I went to Uman and I'm back." Wouldn't this have been the right venue to share the details?
Glad I'm not the only one. He's very vague. Maybe there is a backstory that I'm unaware of.
There is a backstory I've read about him once years ago an interview in a magazine and gave all details. I guess he chose not to talk about it anymore or hes embarrassed of it. Who knows.
Maybe too painful/shameful
But anyway you’re not supposed to remind a Baal teshuva about his past. So it’s not really ok to probe.
He definitely doesn't need to share any details he's uncomfortable sharing, but the title was basically mentioning all that and then it was just skipped over...
There was probably another 3 hours worth of his life and details. He kindly asked prior to respect him and he’ll open up about what he wants to open up about. Iyh one day!
Make it 15
The chizzuk from the נ׳חל נ׳ובע מ׳קור ח׳כמה is what’s gonna bring us all out of our גלות פרטיות…!!

BH 🎉
He was homeless and took money from non-Orthodox shuls. Now, he engages in lashon hara against them?! I find that hypocritical.
I was homeless even when I was chasidish
