Regarding the rattle: when the clutch handle is out, the clutch dics are pushed together and hence they are silent. The deep rattle are the gears in the gearbox accelerating and decelrating with the engine pulses. When clutch handle is pulled in, the gears stop rotating and gets silent. At the same time a high frequency low volume rattle from the loose dry clutch discs can be heard.

They do sound like a bag of nails in neutral, I think of it as a feature rather than a bug.. If it ever stops rattling, I'll be worried !

It's only the dry clutch. No worries mate.

I may say. Never had my triple8 stored in frozen condition. Its a no-no for fine tuned Italian bike to get the lubs get old.

There is something with the 851/888 that makes the overall sound different than the later generations. My theory is having the pipes separated on each side rather than together under the seat as with 916/999/1098. Twin Panigale with stock exhaust is a different sound as well with the tips on either side under the engine. You can have the same volume with those bikes but the sound quality (maybe phasing of the sound waves for certain frequencies?) is just better on the 851/888.
Induction noise is also nice on the early bikes while riding, mid-range rpm at full throttle and tucked in. The bike just sounds alive (cliche I know but accurate). There was one old 888 video on YT from 10+ years ago that captured the overall sound while riding the bike more accurately than just about anything since.

Perhaps, also the induction roar isn't easy to capture, but tucked down at speed it sounds louder than the exhaust.

Great sound, great bike and in perfect condition. Never had some trouble with the 888?

No never had any problems apart from a battery dying due to lack of use. Oh and it got damaged (mainly bodywork) when I got hit by a car, which didn't stop. Left me bleeding in the road. I wasn't too badly hurt, but the bike needed a lot of TLC after that..

Amazing! We've heard the 888 is a very sensitive bike... Goog maintenance seems to be everything
