Oysters and bread with butter is obvious but sparrows, they were also sold as food, food for the poor and destitute. Sparrows had little to no meat on them, but they could be added to a stew of tubers like potatoes and carrots to add a tiny bit of meat and a bunch of flavor to it and what little fat they had in them, but many of the poor would also eat Pigeons, and Pigeons could have quite a bit more meat on them, and they were often regarded as an excellent meat Americans would sometimes call them squab, but I don't know it that was the same for British people. But if you go looking through very old recipe books you'll find the occasional recipe for pigeon, but the problem with Pigeons is that they are quite a bit smarter than sparrows, brain size is always the factor for intelligence, and Pigeons would remember the tricks and traps humans laid for them, but they were the predominant birds that were found within the cities, Sparrows and Pigeons. So there is the reason why they would be sold for a farthing, because a farthing was a coin that many destitute and poor would have and sometimes the small coins were often given out by the church as well so that the poor could at least get a meal from a farthing in some way. But this was likely in the largest cities of England at the time like London, where the population was high.

A great two days with no distractions. Thank you for taking us with you. I think you will get to the 20,000 views (your at 16,000 now), but you should give Simon a break now that he has officially found a horde. He couldn't have done it without your guidance these past 6 months. You do have to admit he is a lucky guy, and he is lucky to have you as a friend.
That floral mark on the cross looked similar to the floral marks on the silver thimble you found a few videos back. So maybe it was a popular design with a local silversmith.
With all this lead you keep finding, if you melted it down you could probably make a couple of regiments of lead soldiers with horses.
Always have a blast watching your videos. They are informative in so many ways and I can't wait to see what's next.

John, you lucky so and so. I believe the hammered coin is a voided long cross penny of Henry 111. The voided long cross ran from Henry 111 to Edward 1. It was Edward who introduced the farthing and halfpenny. Just to say ,it was a pleasure meeting you at detectival as well.

Quick lesson: A long cross will extend to the edge of the coin up to the outer edge of the text. A short cross will terminate at an inner wreath (or garland?) within the outer circle of text. This is a fabulous long cross. Great find.

Stunning coin John. Medieval silver to put a smile on your face. Love the silver cross as well, looks like that has good age. One of my subscribers (and a big fan of yours called Gillian) met you at the recent Detectival, I was there too at the Regton stand, but sadly we didn't cross paths for a chat. (She's always talking about you and Gary Blackwell lol). Maybe one day we will meet up, although I'm originally from the North east of England I've lived in Dorset for some 40 years now so there's quite a long distance between us. All the best and good luck on your future recoveries of coins and artefacts from our mystical ancient past. Keith. 👍

That was a really nice silver hammered U detected. Really nice condition & a good thickness to it as you said. Would love to go out wth U detecting for the knowledge U have.
I'm a Clydebank man right next to the 5000yr old cochno stone ( cup & ring marks) discovered in 1887 by Rev. James Harvey & iv had some decent finds next to the markings. I do alot of detecting in Carbeth as I have free roam to miles of land on my friends land & I own a wee butt & Ben there also. He owns loads of land around Drymen too, which iv still to hit. I'm learning all the time a little bit more on the history of the land & the relics & coins iv accumulated . But by being a subscriber to your channel i pick up a history lesson every time & I just want to thank you for your knowledge & time U give to us subscriber's.
I actually need to start putting a TH-cam channel out there myself as my best friend whom I laid to rest 2 days ago (god rest his soul) have some great footage with his drone that he loved to film me digging up hunks of iron & the occasional hammered coins. So thank u for the history lessons learned & the artifacts shown. 👍⛏️. Never knew that's why Scotland yard was named. Awesome. I love learning these things

wow...2 fantastic finds there john...i think the hammered is a Henry 3rd long cross, but as you said it could be 1st...2nd or a john...as for the cross, reminds me of a homemade cross and the markings look possibly Roman or even Viking, probably made to be carried as opposed to having a suspension loop...i have seen that "SUN" Symbol" somewhere before..so in all honesty i don't have a clue...but finding stuff like that those fields are full of promise, well done again m8, GL&HH Gordon.
