Yep, I was 22 at the time and life was pretty good for most people then with a strong middle class and civil rights being established. The only stain was the Vietnam war but even that brought millions of us together in protest. I wish the young people of today were living in such a warm time. Hopefully, the new progressive movement will succeed in making that happen.

It was almost overwhelming to hear James Taylor play this song on Colbert. His voice is still as pure and angelic as ever. I was privileged to listen to James Taylor on my sister's very fine stereo in the 70's while I visited them during summers and they were stationed in Germany. There is no better way to enjoy beautiful memories.

saxmidiman, I agree. I haven’t listened to James Taylor in years but “Sweet Baby James” was in my head yesterday. I saw this clip just now, and man if he’d have sang that one, I would have freaked. Kinda glad he didn’t. That would have been too weird. But yeah, he’s always been my favorite. Learned most of his songs on guitar a long time ago. He’s still able to bring tears to my eyes. I’m glad he’s still with us too.

This man and his songs are timeless. When I was in school as a teenager in New Zealand studying for exams my best friend and I would put on her Mum’s CD of James Taylor’s Greatest Hits or Best Of, whatever. We would put it on loop and quietly chill, sing along and do our homework. Her mum tragically died a few years ago but I will forever associate this music with that amazing woman ❤️

At about the same time as this appearance, Taylor appeared on a rival late night show and explained that he wrote this song while in Europe in 1968. He was visiting Formentera off the coast of Spain. While there, he took a ferry to neighboring Ibiza, where he and his companions missed the return ferry. Having no money for a hotel, they found an outdoor cafe with tables and chairs, and spent the night sitting there. He became homesick, especially for North Carolina (where he had grown up), and came up with the song just as the sun came up the next morning. A lot of this, especially some of the imagery, is reflected in the lyrics.

JT has been my favourite singer/songwriter since he first recorded Sweet Baby James. His delightful sense of humour and genuine modesty together with his sweet singing voice has kept him, rightly so, as one of the best in an ongoing career and continual touring. Apart from Kim, his wife, I don't recognise any of the backing singers and they're not his usual musicians. Maybe they stayed in Vegas. Being the same age as him and seeing him live several times I hear how his voice is becoming slightly frail. He can still hit the right notes although I think he's adapted the keys of his songs which is common with singers growing older. His finger picking and light brushing of the strings has always been wonderful and unique. Love him.

@James Taylor Well, I think you have given the great gift of your music to the world by having the strength and ability to write down and process your feelings, thoughts and inspirations. The song I love the most so far is "walking man". You create images in the mind of the listener. That's more than just "music", that is poetry in music. "The frost is on the pumpkin and the hay is in the barn... " I can see the frosting, I can smell the fresh cold winter-air and I can almost hear the sound of the grass, frozen stiff and cracking unter your feet as you walk... I wish you the very best, be aware and take care! Love Birgit from the lake of constance, Germany

I think he recognizes his voice decline, but chooses to rise to the moment. He understands the joy he brings to his listeners. I am 61, and my brain over writes the minor changes in his delivery...
We are the boomers who remember the simpler times. Tx JT

There is no one else like James T. Growing up with his music and voice was something musically special. The part of being great is to know when it's "that time". Time takes us all. I just seen him in Vegas. He is old. His voice not as young ss it used to be. He looked tired. I've seen him many times through the years. It's time to go out on top.

Listening to JT will always remind me of one of the first women I dated. We played his music over and over in her tiny apartment in Toronto. Takes me right back to those simpler times.

In 1991 James played LATE NIGHT with David Letterman. I waited in the lobby in 30 Rock at the elevator where I knew he would exit, all the whole hoping that he would not disappoint me and be a jerk.
When he exited the elevator I held out his current CD and asked him to autograph the liner notes. He obliged and asked me how I liked the new CD, and if I had a favorite track (Copperline and Frozen Man we’re my favorites, BTW) JT could not have been nicer or more generous with his time. James Taylor is the best.

Remember purchasing the "Mud Slide Slim" album in abt 1970 at the Warner Brothers Studio lot at one of their little record stores. Been a James Taylor fan since big time. Such a great artist.

What a performance! I've seen him twice at Wrigley Field. For some reason... I always get choked up when I hear this song. It was played at a friend's funeral. And by the way, I harmonize great with James.

James is a living legend, my first wife turned me on to him sometime around 1970, I've loved him ever since. He's a Massachusetts boy, one of our treasures.
