I agree in that it seems more 'decisive' and has 'more punch' in German, yet this version has something sweet...it's much more relateable to everyday live. It's amazing.
Catalina H the Vampire problems were so specific though, surely it'snot a given that it would fall apart the same way? West End if not Broadway then, I think English speaking audiences would love it!
Yes, West End surely!!! I'd love an English version, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think Broadway would do it justice. I think the poetic beauty of Death would be misunderstood (kind of what happened in the later European versions too..) and I think it wouldn't get such an audience. We all grew up with Sisi, but I bet (maybe I'm wrong) that people in the USA would have no idea about her.
Catalina H, i think it's a safe bet that they wouldn't be familiar with her to be honest. I'm Irish and embarrassingly I hadn't heard of Sisi and her history until I actually visited Vienna. Much of that period in European history had been phased out of the school curriculum by my time. She's a fascinating figure though so I think audiences would take to her story very quickly.
If there is a difference between Korean and English is that the Korean version is based on a dream. She is dreaming of freedom and desiring to be free. In this English version, she is in open defiance and making a declaration for herself.
I will not be well bred, Obedient and well behaved, I will not be humble, don't jumble to be enslaved. I don't want to be your property, Cuz I belong to me, When I walk the tightrope, Don't stop me, Just let me try, I want to take chances, Find out what it takes to fly, I don't care at all if you agree, I belong to me, If you try to range me on your own array, You force me to leave you alone, If you try to change me, I'll just break away, To be what I am on my own,
I'm freezing, I'm burning, You can't put me on the shelf, I'm growing, I'm learning, To be even more myself, I know it's not easy to be free, But I belong to me, I hate to be burdened, With duties and ancient lies, Can't stand to be touched, By the looks of a thousand eyes, I flee from the crowd in agony, I just belong to me, If you want to find me don't hold me so tight, Don't break me and don't take me on, If you try to find me, I'm ready to fight, I'll shake off my chains and be gone! I'm here when you need me, I live and I die with you, I'll share all your troubles, I'll laugh and I'll cry with you, You can blame me and bless me, But you cannot possess me, Cuz I belong to me, To me!

@boyofletch I agree in that it is more 'decisive' and has 'more punch' in German, yet this translation is kinda sweet. It's relateable both to the story and also to everyday live (mine anyway *lol*)...it's a much softer and different version. Puts a different angle on the musical
well did it come to west end? I really really really really really really really want Elisabeth the Musical to come to Broadway!!!! If not, then off-Broadway or on West End!!!!!!!
Sarah Hamilfan, I've heard both and have to say I've always much preferred this one. I think the lyrics are much more powerful and evocative. A small number of the phrases here are a bit clunky but overall the lyrics and their symbolism is so much stronger! Why do you like the other better?
@DomexDDE i totally agree normally i almost never prefer german (my mother tounge) because it's to hard and like the softer english better but in this case german fits better BECAUSE it's harder ... it just suits the song better and the message of the song is somehow clearer
@RyanneLove: This a austrian/german story and I guess that the german version is the best. :) It's my favourite musical - it's awesome!!! I've watched 5 times.. and I will watch it thousand times more!
I am a little bit confused, because the pictures of Pia Douwes and Uwe Kröger origin from the tour-production 2008/09, but the sound-recodring is from 1992...
Personally, I think that the German version is wayyyyyyyyy better (especially the one form 1992), but this one is perfect for my friends who for some unknown reason don't find German beautiful.
I think this is better than the I live this life for me translation. I like the song though only I think this suits Sissi and her struggle more and it's more true to the original story in German that they want to tell!
I prefer the Dutch version! I normally prefer English songs but this is just not good IMO. It sounds dull and flat, no passion, no anger like in the Dutch or even the German versions. Just my opinion
I found another English version with slightly different lyrics:th-cam.com/video/hbJFSijXAZM/w-d-xo.html which version is a closer translation of the German lyrics?

We need this on Broadway!
kasey westbrook I am surprised that this is not on Broadway yet...
Broadway would ruin it... just like they did Tanz der Vampire. Sisi is not at all the huge figure she is here, they don't care about European history.
Catalina H the Vampire problems were so specific though, surely it'snot a given that it would fall apart the same way? West End if not Broadway then, I think English speaking audiences would love it!

Pia!!! Haha who would have thought she would end up like this when she started out as a swing in the dutch production of Cats haha well done girl!
do we hear Pia *ANYWHERE* on the '87 Dutch "Cats" cast recording?

Pia and Uwe are the greatest.
i just love pia and this is her most wonderfull song i love it in dutch in german and english wow
I'm in love with the Korean version.
pia douwes, ich liebe dich, du bist soviel :)
oh my, german, dutch, english
she can do it all! amazing!
Pracht nummer.
Brilliant & perfect translation from the German original ✨✨✨
well did it come to west end? I really really really really really really really want Elisabeth the Musical to come to Broadway!!!! If not, then off-Broadway or on West End!!!!!!!
It's so surreal to hear in english, the German version is infinitely better
The Dutch version is the best in my opinion!
I take it your Dutch? :p I'm biased towards German b/c it was my first an primary language for Elisabeth, just as I suppose Dutch is for you
Yes, the Dutch and German versions are both much better, in my opinion. I like the Dutch version best.
Do you guys mean the vocals or lyrically? Because it's nice for english-speaking audiences to get a chance to understand too...
Sarah Hamilfan, I've heard both and have to say I've always much preferred this one. I think the lyrics are much more powerful and evocative. A small number of the phrases here are a bit clunky but overall the lyrics and their symbolism is so much stronger! Why do you like the other better?

Amazing

That would be amazing. Maybe one day.....

Dutch is even better.
Awesome is overused. But here it applies. Hands down. 💕 Going to be singing this at my recital.Though, think I’ll do it in the original German.
this is my theme song :)
Orochimaruswife1 sameeew
pia douwes, du bist nicht schon, du bist sehr schon, du bist verdammt verdammt schon :)
I think this is better than the I live this life for me translation. I like the song though only I think this suits Sissi and her struggle more and it's more true to the original story in German that they want to tell!
- Nederlands
- Engels
- Duits.. wat komt er straks bij.. Italiaans? =D
No, not yet. There are no plans to bring it over. :(
❤
yes but it's really from the 1992. there she recorded a cd with a new version of "Ich gehör nur mir" and this.
has this musical bbeen in america
I prefer this to 'I live this life for me'. This one is a more literal translation and has more fight in it.
Does anyone have a transcription of this English version of the lyrics? I'm trying to learn the song :)
hmm... the english version doesn't cut it for me... the dutch one and german one are much better
Phamy Caint lyrically? Or the vocals. I personally think it's beautiful but I have no attachment to other versions.
Phamy Caint total einverstanden!
There is another English version from Pia Douwes, it’s much beter: music.th-cam.com/video/VUnZfv3FFWI/w-d-xo.html&feature=share
has it been produced in the U.S.??? If so where can I find it?
😍❤
2:03 she looks so happy :)
did it ever come to london?
or it ever came to off-broadway?
is it played in the USA ? Or in GB ? Does anyone know ?
I prefer the Dutch version! I normally prefer English songs but this is just not good IMO. It sounds dull and flat, no passion, no anger like in the Dutch or even the German versions. Just my opinion
She sounds so you singing in English!!! She sounds so different! When she sings in German and Dutch you can tell it's her. She sounds in English too.
ikr !! I normally prefer english version of the musicals songs but this one is really better in dutch or in german ! but Pia is still amazing ;)
beste zanger pia
I don't really like this version... But I must admit this is VERY BROADWAY! it has it written all over it and I think because of that it succeeds...
I found another English version with slightly different lyrics:th-cam.com/video/hbJFSijXAZM/w-d-xo.html which version is a closer translation of the German lyrics?
thanks for sharing! when did she sing this?
kreuters en en groningen, nederland :)

Are there any more songs from Elisabeth that they've done in english
bonnaXbeast i belive so
How old is this recording?
ze is helemaal top =D=D, really i'm jealous=P
Did ELISABETH ever come to Broadway?
sounds like it wasn't in 1992?
In 1992.
wll that sucks :(. Will they bring it to the West End? PLEASE!
@renate102 Whaha, ja xD misschien kan ze het wel. ;p Ik ben ook jaloers op d'r hoor ;)
ma nick~nom ist wayfully et funniestly " mee " @$$ en doe~ray~mee that beste zanger musiekfeest pia douwes dutch lady must have been be~longing to / 2 " mee " :) lol :)
I like the german and dutch version much more... english is not the right language for this song, I think...
Yeah and the note she hits at the end is flat in this version
won can see die / das / der wayfully et funniestly both playful " virtue$ " et " miss~chief$ " role$ play$ pia'$ ( peer$? pier$? pierce? pierre'$? :) hath wayfully played en the theatrikal performance artform$ en the well~written libretto'$ for~tune$ edutainment$ :)
Last note was a little on the weak side. I don't know.
