  • This music video, featuring songwriter/producer Ta'Mara Walker, videographer Jordan Green, lyrics by S. Renee Mitchell, and numerous young people from Portland, OR, is a celebration of the natural gap between our teeth, which in medical terms is called "diastema." While some are encouraged to close their gaps with braces to avoid teasing and public shaming, some African countries see the gap as a sign of beauty. Nigerians, for example, pay thousands of dollars to file a gap into their front teeth as a fashion statement.
This video, directed and produced by F.I.Y.A. (Faith is Your Answer) on behalf of I Am MORE (Making Ourselves Resilient Everyday), is part of the "Spreading the Black Joy Virus" campaign, based in Portland, OR. Its photographic celebration of the gap also explores the myths, stereotypes and self-acceptance strategies of Black Portlanders who have learned how to love their gaps.
