What memories for me. My dad owned one from 1939 to 1943 it was black with green interior. I don't know if it was a four or a six but it had a pre-selector gear box that used to moan when the car was started. Downside was the seat cushions which were blow-up ones and occasionally they would puncture or lose their air pressure dropping me, the infant passenger, down to floor level.

Fabulous ! My first car was a Riley kestrel--BUT, as a skint 17 year old in 1958, mine came out of a scrap yard. It was all original, not sure of engine size, I, and siblings, were all involved tidying the bodywork and inside trim. It was all Aluminium, even inside bodywork, Twin back seats, were concaved like dessert spoons , with inflateable rubber cushions, ( perished). All leather inside, and virtually complete. Later, we discovered that the clutch bearing was in bits, but was able to replace it. So, with a new battery, she fired up after a few minutes. Later. I traded her in for a Morris Minor.

A truly beautiful car, in my view the most elegant of the 1930's and I'm including Bugattis in that. The registration "BHP" was of course only possible if the car was registered in Coventry (where Rileys were manufactured).

Hopefully once the valves are bedded in a bit, you would have fixed that noisy valve train.? Carbs seemed have needed a bit of tune as well, looks like you had to very careful not to stall it. Or the ignition timing was off a bit, too retarded.
