as a diehard, borderline obsessed fan of the evil within, whos friends have an inside joke to "Take a shot whenever I mention it", tangos shutdown fuckin struck me where it hurts, and im so glad to see videos starting to come out every now and then defending the first ever horror game I played as a teen ;w;
My favorite part was at the very end after it’s revealed that the main protagonist was actually working for the antagonist the whole time and he turns directly to the camera and says “Truly I was The Evil Within.”
Dude, "Further Reading" is a wonderful concept! I dig this - a LOT! As for the vid itself, well, what can I say, you know how much I love The Evil Within. We are very much alike in this, well, apart from that Silent-Hill-sized chip on your shoulder, but I appreciate having at least some difference in opinion.
Proxidist, thank you! I found your Evil Within videos while combing through reviews for my own research. I love your editing style and your willingness to defend this game
I hated this game at first, for many of the reasons most people did too. I thought the forced encounters and incredibly limited ammo capacity didn't mix. I didn't like the upgrade system, thought it was just tacked on. After about a year from release, I decided to give it another try and approached the game on its terms, it all clicked. I don't think any other game made me feel the same joy and relief, and maybe a little self satisfaction, as I felt when I finally got through the eyeball arena in Ch. 15. Great vid. Glad to see this classic getting some praise. Hurts that we'll likely never see anything from this strange and campy world again.
I had no idea you could sneak attack the sadist at the beginning. I've literally never tried because of how silly of an idea that is within the context of what's going on in the game at that point. And like you said, the keys are RIGHT. THERE. But yeah, in general I think TeW is one of the best games the genre has to offer. The enemy designs (especially the bosses) are highly memorable, there's a number of setpieces that stick with you, the agony crossbow is one of the coolest weapons in the genre, the match burning mechanic is one of the more nifty things in the genre, and the gameplay is (mostly) incredibly tightly tuned just like the games its aping. It's issues are minor, but it does have them- making people have to level up stamina is questionable at best (especially when you consider its max level is basically the baseline of darn near any other game's), there's some slight jank with stealth detection and hitboxes for throwables/matches, and... well, that's about it imo. I feel like the dissent against the game is largely just due to when it came out. TeW is slow and methodical, and when it released the industry was already moving away from anything that made players take their time or think methodically. The second game was probably reviewed better by those people and their ilk because it tightens things up in that regard, but while I love the second game it completely loses the memorable aesthetic and nifty enemy designs (sans one) that the original had.
I'm right there with you. Ive noticed this with a lot of games. Hype is the mindkiller and it'll ruin any chance of joy at something that just wasnt what you expected. 2 is good unto itself but feel severely neutered
It's impressive for being as good as it is despite obviously being cobbled together (and no, there being a narrative excuse for it doesn’t give it a free pass).
My biggest critique of the game is how it all felt so cobbled together in terms of story, setting and mechanics. The only thing I personally think it really excelled at was the art design. Some interesting ideas but I found the execution underwhelming to the point I never finished it or touched the sequel. A shame really.
Thats too bad. It was always gory or gothic enough to hook me for first 10 levels and feel cohesive. Admittedly chaps 11-14 being daytime shootouts with gunmen was pretty jarring and weird in a lot of ways and really was just Mikami making an Inception game for a little bit
Such an underrated title. I personally prefer the sequel but this is still a great game that didn't deserve the hate it got. The scariest thing here though is learning that DSP had a good take, which is scarier than the game itself. Great video!
@MidnightMedium looking forward to the sequel video. I never played either but I followed it since they were announced. Have to check it out. I like the bad sprint starting out.
Yeah, the sequels not my favorite thing ever or anything but it's definitely still got a Tango X factor to it. I'm looking to making this video and expressing what's pretty great about its improvements but also what feels kind of half baked

Haven't played the first game. But I can say that I really wanted to like the second game, but the gameplay quality was just not adequate to justify a full playthrough. State of decay levels of combat jank, but not the good kind.
See, the 2nd game has plenty of good qualities but you're absolutely on my wavelength. State of Decay 2 was actually what it kept feeling like visually, all that muddy texture stuff. It got better when I unlocked the frame rate somehow but my goodness, so much Unreal fuzz. And the hit detection, enemy AI constantly turning and rarely patrolling in one direction long enough to sneak up, etc. when the game's streamlined so much, these problems stand out all the more as all the jankier because the bar for competencys been lowered so much
The Evil Within 2 is a better game imho. The Evil Within is RE 4.5 for me. I get some may like it, but why would I want to play RE 4.5 when I can play RE4? John Johanas tries to do something different with The Evil Within 2, this is the most open world survival horror game you can get with clever ideas, some inspirations from Silent Hill (Union, radio frequencies) and The Last of Us (stealth mechanics, ammos in the cars). Shinji Mikami tried to return to RE4 with The Evil Within 1. "Remember the good old days before RE5 action shooter and RE6 mess?" It's not enough for me.
I can see why but it's much safer, more conventional product overall. It's still got that Tango spice to it but it's much more modern gaming 101. It's not nearly as scary, the monsters are more generic outside of a couple designs and the bosses are almost all pushovers that don't feel dangerous. Plus there's a litany of smaller gameplay quirks that show up and I"ll tackle those in the next video. Evil Within can be a little trying but it's far more unique. the reason it's not just RE4 is because it has stealth, way better bosses, and way better atmosphere. That's not to impugn RE4 particularly. It's still wonderful but it has a lot more boring filter than people like to recall and it's boss fights are fine, with only occasionally standout design. That's why I'd play the Evil Within. RE4's more focused gameplay wise, sure, and it works more consistently obviously, but the tradeoff is the spectacle and scope is far greater in this game than RE4.
I can see where you're coming from, and while Resident Evil 4 has never been my personal favorite in the series (I’ve always leaned towards Resident Evil GameCube, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 2 Remake), I think the Resident Evil 4 Remake does address most of the points you raised. The inclusion of stealth mechanics, the stronger emphasis on survival horror over action, and the revamped bosses and atmosphere seem to align with your critique. While I can appreciate the uniqueness of The Evil Within, I feel like the RE4 Remake really nails those improvements while still keeping its own identity.
I actually just played Re4 Remake. I found it pretty frustrating. Boss fight modifications were awesome but really didnt get much out of it. Was surprised!
“In praise of shadows” is a guy who can’t even stick to a subject while making a video about horrible conservative horrors. I don’t think he can add 2+2 while discussing game style and trailer for same game.
True that. It is algorithmically useful though and is so impressive artistically and in terms of scope that I think its a huge accomplishment few games resemble. Its not just a punch the clock type of developed game
that steam review calling the agony crossbow a magic wand harpoon thing is hilarious 🤣
how do you not know what a crossbow is
Hahahah, how did i not even remember that was in there? Thats absolute gold

Youre exactly who i hoped would show up to this video, the diehards who appreciate it with the core of their being!
My favorite part was at the very end after it’s revealed that the main protagonist was actually working for the antagonist the whole time and he turns directly to the camera and says “Truly I was The Evil Within.”
I think we all agree gamings not been the same since

Thank you! I have no idea what chip youre talking about ;)
Secretly? OVERTLY.
I like your style. I agree it should be regarded more highly. I say secretly in that its often overlooked by the general public
I didn’t realize we almost got an Evil Within remaster…what an absolute tragedy!
Right! The games aged so well but some colors get a bit washed out and some textures are a bit blurry but id have loved to see 60 fps in action
Amazing video, I love that more and more people are showing this game love.

It's a great game with noticeable spikes of frustration.
100 percent

I hear that!
it has a free pass because it work and its good

Thanks so much! Yeah i kept waiting for DSP to revert to his meme self and it took almost the whole video XD
Still my favorite Horror game to date!
My mannnnnn
@ don’t make me blush ☺️
Great video, excellent breakdown, and a masterpiece of writing (Just like the game it's based on 😉)
Thanks, Zany! I appreciate you dropping by to represent a perenially overhated game!
11:46 in praise of shadows having a bad take?!? Whaaaaaaaat😮
17:33 “resident internet asshole”😂 bro this video cooked
Thanks, boi. Yeah lot of bodies hit the floor in this one
Just got done playing this recently. I enjoyed it tons!
First time? Holds up really well, doesnt it?
Yes first time. My brother recommended it to me and it does hold up very well indeed
Ride on. Welcome!
Really good video thank you
Thank you very much! I appreciate you checking it out

@@MidnightMedium I got that sense too. Felt like a half step forward. Miss the original VA for Sebastian I thought he did a great job.
About damn time.
Aint it tho. So many delays!

@MidnightMedium That's it. The hit detection and Enemy AI.

What movie is this?
Hostel
Ok fine I'll play that copy I've been sitting on for years 😑
Yessssssss, its workingggg

The Last of Us is a bit of stretch as that kind of mechanic was not new or Last of us branded

Wouldnt surprise me. Def not impressed
Not everything is a fucking "masterpiece"
I say this as someboy who likes TEW.
